This is my personal interpretation of these lines spoken in the Battle of the Five Armies film, based on all the knowledge available to me.
Unfortunately, it took a tremendous amount of time to translate these, for the simple reason that there is no transcript available, nor are some of these lines pronounced very clearly either.
Neo-Khuzdul dictionaries, found here: dwarrowscholar.wordpress.com/...
Further information on each translated line:
1) "Yanâd Durinul", (Sons of Durin) from David Salo's [YND] birth/son, as in "ênâd" (birth) - Ereb. Khuzdul: "Yand" (son), "Yanâd" (sons). This meaning will be added shortly to the updated Neo-Khuzdul dictionaries. "Durinul", meaning "of Durin" is the Possessive Descriptive/Lineage marker as seen in "Balin Fundinul" (Balin, son "of Fundin")
2) "Ihgirî ni-hun!" (Go right into them) I consider this line the most doubtful of all, as I have mixed feelings about the radicals used in the first word (it isn't quite clearly pronounced unfortunately). After much consideration I went with the listed translation. Reason for this is that [HGR] is used in my Neo-Khuzdul for "right, to go right". Ni is attested as "in" in Salo's Neo-Khuzdul, while "hun" is the logical plural of "hu" (he/it), making it "them" (a colloquial masculine/neuter alternative for the more formal "izd").
3) "Ifridî!" (Make Ready). Plural imperative form (iCCiCî structure), attested on David Salo's site: midgardsmal.com/
4) See 3
5) "Baruk Khazâd!" (Axes of the Dwarves) - Original Khuzdul by J.R.R. Tolkien, first half of the famous battle-cry as uttered by Gimli during the Battle of the Hornburg.
6) "Ansaru, bekâr!" (Company, weapons!) - Shortened version of David Salo's: "Ansaru kitnul, ifridî bekâr!" (Centre company, ready weapons!) attested on David Salo's site: midgardsmal.com/
7) "Rakân, bekâr!" (Rows (lines), weapons!) - Though "bekâr" is attested (arms, weapons), "rakân" is not, yet is seems logical that this word means "rows" or "lines". It takes the plural structure CaCâC as seen in many Neo-Khuzdul noun types. Furthermore the radicals [RKN] seems to link to the consonants found in the Proto-Germanic *rai(h)waz, meaning "row". This meaning will be added shortly to the updated Neo-Khuzdul dictionaries.
8) "Ai-rusê" (Upon the filth!). This was a tricky one to say the least, again as the pronunciation is far from clear. "ai-" is from Tolkien's original "aya", as seen in "ai-mênu" (upon them). "rusê" is from the radicals [RSY] from Proto-Germanic *drohs- (dirt, dregs), using the CuCaC form, as seen in the original Tolkien "duban", forming "rusay", which becomes "rusê" through monophthongization. This meaning will be added shortly to the updated Neo-Khuzdul dictionaries.
9) "Idmi d'dum" (Welcome to the Hall). A novel way of welcoming someone to say the least. "Idmi" is the singular imperative form of "to welcome", using the same radicals as seen in the word "dum" (mansion, hall). "d' " is the syncopated form of "du", meaning "to". While "dum", is original Tolkien Khuzdul, as seen in "Khazad-dûm" (mansions of the dwarves, Dwarrowdelf).
10) See 5
11) "Khazâd ai-mênu!!" (The Dwarves are upon you) - Original Khuzdul by J.R.R. Tolkien, second half of the famous battle-cry as uttered by Gimli during the Battle of the Hornburg.
12) Singular form as seen in 2. Note: It is hard to tell if Billy Connolly utters a "hg" or "k", this may have been "Ikrid ni-hu", which would translate as "believe (trust) in him (it)!", this may refer to either Durin, Thorin or even their weapons. May very well apply to the translation in line two as well.
13) Du-bekâr! (“To arms!”), attested on David Salo's site: midgardsmal.com/

Of course, the language of the Dwarves (Khuzdul) will always be largely incomplete. Tolkien remarked in the Appendices that the Dwarves didn't teach anyone else Khuzdul, not even their own proper names. Part of this has to do with Dwarvish character; dwarves are by nature secretive and slow to trust anyone. Gimli's shouts at Helm's Deep in the books ("Baruk Khazad! Khazad ai-menu!") are no secret since they've been used on every dwarvish battlefield, and translate to "Axes of the Dwarves! The Dwarves are upon you!". Almost everything else is complete guesswork as The Dwarrow Scholar has pointed out.

I think the prouder races/nations in LOTR are the most badass. The fact that the Dwarves just don't give a flying shit about who their enemies are really brings a go Dont od flavor to them, not to mention all that War chanting is enough to bring a chill down any one's spine. Don't forget Rohan, their own war chanting is really badass to say the least, especially in Return Of The King when they were all chanting Death. sheesh that stuff is unforgettable
@Samtheman08
@Samtheman08 8 лет назад
Yeah, Dwarves through history have always been outnumbered, so no matter the odds or situation, they know how to deal with it, war chanting to the very last dwarf still standing, they never falter or lose morale.

a lot of elve lovers and tree huggers wont like this, but Narsil, the sword with which Isildur cut the One Ring from Sauron's finger was forged by Dwarves in the Ered Luin! So without the Dwarves, Sauron essentially would've never lost the ring in the first place. Without the Dwarves, Sauron couldn't have been defeated at all ... Dwarves FTW!

@mato6123
@mato6123 7 лет назад
I think more Bekar may mean "ready" or "get ready", "rakan, bekar" shall then mean "rows, get ready". It fits in all quotes: when commander shouts "yanad durinul", the rows reply with "rakan bekar", once the falanx is created, and "Du bekar" as a Thorin's battle cry. I know it conflicts with "Ifridi!", which means the same in your translation, but as "Ifridi" is used after "right into them" and when Wargoats start, it may mean "march forth". I think we should ask the authors ;-).
@TheDwarrowScholar
@TheDwarrowScholar 7 лет назад
Thank you for your thoughts on that. But "Bekâr" does mean "arms (weapons)" and "Ifridî" does mean " make ready". These are not guesses or assumption by myself, but this has been attested by the author of this Neo-Khuzdul version (David Salo) as seen here: midgardsmal.com/dwarvish-8/

From my first time reading LOTR, in high school (1974), I have been a dwarf fan. Whenever I can play a dwarf character in a game, I do. I've worn a beard ever since I got out of the Air Force, over 35 years ago. When I joined the SCA (Society For Creative Anachronism), the first thing I did, when I was able, was to get a suit of full plate armor. It was only the second one in our "kingdom," and a LOT better looking than the first. Dwarves represent!

The most frustrating thing about this battle is that no one, and I mean no one fights in formation, or takes advantage of the fact that the orcs were willing to play offense. Basic principle of battle, if the enemy is attacking, make them smash against your defenses!! Don't charge them!

Thank you for making this video I have some questions though I've seen more translations saying it is "Tanar Durin Nur" instead of "Yanad Durinul" and when they formed the shield wall "Azagh Bekar" instead of "Rakan Bekar" and the "Ai-ruse" sounds too short it sounds more like "Ai-ruse Bekar" by the sound of the dwarves answering the call. And also question regarding Thorin's battle cry at Moria, "Mem no Thror/Thrain, Du Bekar!" Does that sound accurate to you?
@TheDwarrowScholar
@TheDwarrowScholar 8 лет назад
Yes, I've seen those comments too, but I can't agree with the majority of those translations I'm afraid. I (personally) clearly hear "Yanâd Durinul" and not "Tanar Durin Nur". In addition, "Yanâd Durinul" would make perfect sense as well, as it means "sons of Durin", while "Tanar Durin Nur" doesn't really mean anything, it sounds a bit like "booth Durin new" if we translate "tanar durin nur" literally, but obviously that makes no sense. So, I'm fairly certain that it indeed is "Yanâd Durinul". What "rakân bekâr" is concerned... here as well I don't year the "z" or even "gh" sound, so fairly sure it wouldn't be "azagh". I've listened to it a few times, but I don't hear the additional bekâr after "ai-rusê", though it would not be impossible grammatically saying "upon the filth, to arms!". Lastly the translation of the battle cry at Moria is: "Imnu Thrôr, Du Bekâr" (meaning: "in name of Thrór, to arms!").
@FreedomFighter08
@FreedomFighter08 8 лет назад
Thank you makes sense, the first scene when Smaug smashes the gate of Erebor Thorin with his men shouts "Rakan" right? Do you also have translation for the dwarves preparing their last stand at the gates of Erebror right before Thorin's charge out of the gate, as they are preparing I hear "Raise the shields! Ifridi! Ai-ruse! Ai-ruse! Ai-ruse!" is this it correct?
@TheDwarrowScholar
@TheDwarrowScholar 8 лет назад
I believe he says "therkâ" in the scene just before Smaug smashes open the gate of Erebor (AUJ). It is a plural adjective form that means "hold firm". Though here, they should have used the imperative, as it doesn't make sense to use that adjective form here. So instead of "therkâ", he should have said "ithrikî" which is the correct imperative form in this situation. Concerning the scene in the BotFA, preparing the last stand at the gates of Erebor, you indeed hear "ifridî" and "ai-rusê", that indeed is correct.

+The Overcast For years I have studied the works J.R.R Tolkien and of linguist David Salo (who made the languages for the films). There is no school where you can learn this (yet), though I do offer some free online classes in Neo-Khuzdul, for those that have an interest.

I have done a lot of searching for what #1 translated to long before this video was released, and in my searching i found the most commonly believed variant that i found was "Tanar Durin nur", and hearing it over i believe you probably are right. But out of curiosity im wondering what Tanar Durin nur would translate to.
@TheDwarrowScholar
@TheDwarrowScholar 8 лет назад
+Bug Smith "Tanar" is a "stall" or "booth", "nur" is a colloquial version of the word "nar" (meaning "new"). To be honest Tanar Durin Nur would make very little sense i'm afraid.

+The Dwarrow Scholar well its great to know that people are spreading a phrase that just about means durins new booth on multiple forums as so, www.reddit.com/r/TheHobbit/comments/36zhhk/question_about_dwarf_commander_of_the_ironfoot/

Awesome video. you forgot the part where thorin tells thranduil off in dwarvish ( I spit on your grave)
@TheDwarrowScholar
@TheDwarrowScholar 7 лет назад
Actually this video only covers those lines seen in the Battle of Five Armies Movie (hence the title). If not mistaken the part where Thorin addresses Thranduil rudely is seen in the second movie (The Desolation of Smaug), hence not covered in this video. More info on what he says can be seen here: dwarrowscholar.wordpress.com/2014/06/04/insulting-elves/

And what does 'ish kakhfe ai-'d dur-rugnu' mean?
@TheDwarrowScholar
@TheDwarrowScholar 7 лет назад
“îsh kakhfê ai’d dur-rugnul!”, which Thorin utters in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug means: “May my excrement be poured upon the naked-jawed (ones)”. More information on this (and other insults) can be found in one of my articles, here: dwarrowscholar.wordpress.com/2014/06/04/insulting-elves/

I always assume "Du bekâr" meant "to me" or something along the lines of "come with me" as it was Thorin's war cry in the book and it would have been more lore friendly. I may be wrong and your speculation is possible.
@TheDwarrowScholar
@TheDwarrowScholar 8 лет назад
In Neo-Khuzdul "to mê", would actually be "dê" [ a contraction of "du" (to) and "ê" (me)]. "Du bekâr" is in fact attested as "to arms" on David Salo's site, here: midgardsmal.com/dwarvish-4/
@TheDwarrowScholar
@TheDwarrowScholar 7 лет назад
I'm personally convinced that I hear "Yanâd Durinul", meaning "sons of Durin". While "Tanar, Durin nur", would not have any specific meaning in Neo-Khuzdul. As mentioned in a different reply to this same question it seems to be a suggestion by a fan, based on a guess. Yet "Tanar Durin nur" has little to no meaning, in fact it sounds a bit like "Durin's new booth",which would hardly be applicable. As "Tanar" is a "stall" or "booth", "nur" is a colloquial version of the word "nar" (meaning "new"). So, to be honest "Tanar Durin Nur" would make very little sense i'm afraid.

The elvish lines were subtitled, so I see no need tbh. Besides, this channel is dwarf-related, not elf-related. Sadly, I can't get the audio any cleaner than this.
