Dwight hard to start and stalls. Has fuel, has spark. Valve Lash perhaps? Let's check. Part 1 of 2

Dwight is our 2018 Sportsman ACE 570, and it has developed a new problem where it is very hard to start when cold, and it won't idle until it gets warmed up. It only happened occasionally at first, but now it is hard to start every day and takes a while to get it idling reliably. Once it is warmed up, it runs perfect. Fuel is good, throttle body is clean, has spark, no check engine light.
This led me to believe that there was an issue with compression. Unfortunately, these machines cannot be tested for compression traditionally, but I knew that it has a new top end.
In the end, I checked valve lash. Much to my surprise, the valve lash was too tight! This will definitely effect the compression which explains why it was hard to start.
Today is part 1 of this procedure. How to check and adjust valve lash on a Polaris 570 engine. I'll take it apart and measure the clearance. In next week's episode, we'll put it all back together!

Hey there! I can typically find them online and download them for free. Search for "2014 rzr 800 service manual pdf" and you'll typically get some results. I like the PDF version so I can save them on my shop computer. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!

There is always that guy! haha Yeah, it's hard to replicate an intermittent issue. It pretty much had to sit overnight to do it. Once it fired in the morning it was good! The valve lash was definitely way too tight and was an issue, but it started doing the same thing later on. We found a defective cylinder which was causing abnormal wear on the rings. What a mess. It's running like a champ now though! Thanks for watching and for the comment!

tight intake valve lash is a sign of taking in dust from the filter had the same problem with my rzr 900 mine came from running k&n air filters

Yeah...dust, or MUD! This machine got swamped a while back and pulled a ton of mud into the cylinder. Ended up replacing the piston, rings, and cylinder. Ran great after the rebuild, until now! Thanks for watching! Rebuild video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jO76RiG825A.html

Hey 3-day weekend I have a question for you? My Polaris 570 is doing the same thing as yours I have tight intake valves when I measure there is no Gap in between the cam in the bucket shims both intakes are 480 shims where do you think I should go from here
@3DayWeekend

Hey there! That's a hard call. They could be right at zero, or they could be even tighter than that. I just assumed mine were at 0 gap and got the right shim to give me the gap back. I know they aren't cheap so you don't want to spend too much experimenting, but I don't know a better way to do it. If you feel it's almost zero, do it that way. If you feel that it's pushing down on the valve, maybe just deduct another hundredth as your starting point. Hope that helps! Thanks for your comment and for watching!

Yes, and I did when I was ready to move the cams around. Ended up just taking it right now.

Are you supposed to take the tension off of the chain? I am doing this job right now and my feeler gauge won't go in any of the tappets...
