Chrisko1492 It is actually a real blooper. In the extra features portion of this seasons dvd, John said they tried to pop it multiple times and it never would fully pop. When it finally popped, he busted out laughing at how fast Rainn went down. He said he was surprised that they used that take cos he couldn’t get out of frame before he started laughing.

The ball wasn’t actually meant to pop like that. It was meant to slowly deflate, so when Rainn fell down you can see John Krasinski’s real reaction as he jumps out of the shot laughing.

Apparently it's because the first few takes the ball just deflated slowly, and that time the ball actually exploded, which was unexpected. It was so hysterical that they had to keep it, haha.

Yeah, I think it would have been more instinctive to look at John and chuckle because he was the one who “screwed up” this take. By looking at Dwight she maintained character and saved the take, which was judged to be funnier than any of the “good” takes.

“When Rainn’s on the exercise ball bouncing up and down, and I come over and I stab it with the scissors. In every other take we did, I stabbed it and it just slowly goes down. And the camera angle was that he just slowly ducked behind the thing and it was incredible. On the last take they were like “do one more.” And I remember going over and I went “boom”! And I must have hit the seam or something. And it exploded. He hit the ground as hard as I’ve ever seen a human hit the ground. Some fun background on this scene. In the commentary, John Krasinski says that they did multiple takes of this scene and in every other take the ball slowly deflated while Rainn falls with it. You can see at 1:06 that when the ball collapses instantly John jumps out of frame because he started laughing.

John Krasinski was talking about how they did multiple takes and the ball just deflated and then on the last one it just instantly burst, hence him breaking character and running out of frame quickly. I'll try and find the link but my memory is a bit foggy.

They had 17 Fitness orbs. Three practice rounds, and the rest were used for the actual takes. The original idea in the script was for the ball to slowly deflate so Dwight would slowly lower in the frame. The last ball, the ball popped and they put that one in instead. Wise Choice. I don't think it would have been as funny if the ball had just slowly deflated.

Aside from the ball not bein meant to pop that way and John Krasinski doin his best not to laugh, and this is a detail that I think is underrated, the half bit of face in the frame of surprise mixed with him tryin not to laugh in Leslie David Baker after the ball’s popped is hilarious to me and somethin I recently picked up on.

Kinesiologist here, although using fitness balls to sit at work are very beneficial for posture, the bouncing Dwight is doing would cause compressive force on his lumbar spine and would eventually lead to low back pain.

This was filmed multiple times and everytime Dwight just kind of slowly sank down and the camera would get a close up of his face going under the desk. But the version they put in was when Jim accidentally hit a seam and the whole thing popped and Dwight fell straight to the floor. If you look closely Jim runs out of frame because he starts laughing but doesn't want to ruin the shot in case they use it.

I love how they had to use different audio for the ball popping because Rainn was laughing because of how fast the ball popped (As it was supposed to deflate slowly) and thats also how you can kind of hear slow deflation. It's also why Phyllis is smiling

Fun fact: That was a mistake it was supposed to be a small puncter causing air to slowly deflate but it popped completely causing dwight to fall and jim to laugh because he wasn't expecting that
