Loyd introduces a new series of DX 101 videos:
From the Workbench: Exploring the technical and DIY-side of the radio hobby in building antennas, components and more! In this installment, Loyd explores terminating resistors which help give 'terminated loops' their directionality and therefore their strong performance on the AM bands.

Nice Job!!! I would just add that when wrapping wires around terminal posts, always wrap them so that when tightening the nut, the pig tale end is pulled in the direction of the tightening nut. In your case clockwise for both posts. So the resistor lead on the black post is correct, but for the red one, the resistor should have started on the bottom and wrapped clockwise. Thanks for the great videos!!!

That is really great advice, thank you!! Will definitely incorporate that into my upcoming builds. 73 an best of DX!

Excellent tutorial on terminating resistors for AM receive antennas. I have one of those flag pennant loop I bought on ebay from Russia. I was thinking about bring it back and I noticed you have some great videos on that type of antenna. Thank you. 😊

Thank you for the kind words! I am planning a follow-up video on this one to add some things I have learned since I made this version. Keep an eye out and be sure to subscribe so you will know when I post it!

Thank you my friend. I feel that if I can share what I have already learned, through the process add to that knowledge and then share that as well, maybe I can finally give back to this hobby that has given me so much over the years!

You need to be careful as to the type of resistors you use. For a small portable (5'x5') Flag loop using fiberglass tent poles, I used a 588 ohm 2W termination Ceramic Composition Resistor or a 1000 ohms carbon potentiometer purchased from Mouser. 73s N3UMW

Soldering, really? I taught my 8 year old daughter to solder like a pro 30 years ago. She's still a pro. It's really NOT THAT HARD!!! Good video

I have since gotten more practice. Mostly I never had any equipment or place to do it so never really practiced. Much better now with a small workshop!

Do you have a video that shows the tuning of the termination resistor in action? Just wondering how deep a null you can get.

I do have one on my portable flag antenna video, although it is not super easy to hear. I am working on a new one, once I get my remote vactrol operational again. Stay tuned!
