Today I dyed my first rainbow on cotton yarn!
Is dyeing not your style, or you aren't ready to jump in headfirst? Head over to Spellbound Weaving's Etsy store to purchase hand dyed yarn - www.etsy.com/au/shop/Spellbou...
Our Fibre Reactice Procion dye is mixed using the ratio of 1 teaspoons of dye to 120ml (4oz) of water. For colours with a *, double the amount of dye. For colours with ** use four times the amount of dye. Colours with a T contain turquoise and require heat to achieve true shades.
I batched my yarn for 4 hours and also put it into the oven at 50° celsius for one hour.
The fibres used today are 8/2 Ring Spun Cotton and 16/4 Saltwater Rose Sparkle Supima cotton.
Colours used today are
- Fuchsia Red
- Deep Orange
- Golden Yellow
- Granny Apple
- Turquoise (* Use double amount of dye)
- Red Violet

Interesting, I’ve always imagined colour-gradient dyed yarn to be the result of a dipping-process. This is so much easier; Thank-You!

This was fabulous. The washed dried skeins were a true grand finale 🌈 Thanks so much , I’ve never dyed cotton . But think I’ll dream about these until I do :) I would love to earn how to get a clean dark speck onto my yarn . I’ve tried a lot of ways. I think it must be a rite of passage that you have to find out for yourself . You’re an excellent teacher, and talented fiber artistThank you !

I am so happy your video showed up on my feed. I remember my Mom dying our clothes back in the 60s. I am excited to be re-introduced to the process!

Meticulous work and great teaching, thanx I would have like to see how you wrap it up for the oven and do you use like a film plastic wrap or just a piece of lightweight plastic like say a painters drop cloth? I have used plastic wrap with wool. Very beautiful finished product. Also what is ratio of soda ash to water for soak process?

Thank you ! A very fortunate wandering for me today! I weave and spin, dye but just started exploring cottons , plant based dyes... Your tutorial is excellent. Clear , inspiring and I can’t wait to try it ! It’s interesting how much neater the cotton is to use this method with as compared to wool. The cotton holds much more dye , so it’s not as easy to become leaky !

I have a special love for bright rainbow colors, so this was right up my alley! Gorgeous dyeing and something to aspire to next, but right now I am learning to weave and would love to see more weaving videos maybe using some of these beautiful yarns? I would love to know what patterns you have used in some of the cloth that you show on your intro and weaving videos too! I have watched all of your videos now and would love to see more as I like your style of instruction.

Wow!! I feel like I found my New BFF!! I have recently fallen in love with needle punching for pillows & rugs, etc. I am horribly allergic to wool and of course that is what most serious hookers/ punchers recommend. I've tried using heavy cotton yarn with success but am limited with color range. THIS is an answer to prayer! I've been a quilter for 30 years and have had some fun with dyeing fabric so I look forward to trying your techniques...Your videos are so easy to listed to & watch! Thank You so much!! Can't wait to get started! will surely keep you posted. Quick question, I also enjoy needle punch embroidery. Hand dyed cotton floss is extremely expensive. Have You tested cotton floss dyeing/ overdyeing? Thanks Again! Cheers!

I am allergic to wool to where I get hives on my face and hands whenever I'm working with the yarn. I've never actually worn any wool, thank God, but I'm sure I would have a body covered in hives if I did. I love natural yarns though (because the plastic stuff isn't exactly great either, though usable and wearable) and am a huge fan of anything yarn. I love that there's a hand dyer out there that is focused on cotton or other cellulose yarns instead, because I have not yet found any that have a large selection (it seems to be for specific things like summer shawls). I love sock yarns and would be super thankful if you could do a video on self striping sock yarn. I think this one is a little more on the variegated side?

Katie Lukezich are you sure your not allergic to lanolin? Instead of the actual wool? I thought for years I was allergic to all wool turns out it was to lanolin so I can wear and use alpaca as it’s lanolin free x

What beautiful colors! The sparkled cotton is amazing. I'm a knitter not a weaver (yet...😊) and I like to work with blends especially for clothes as opposed to 100% cotton. My current favorite is Bamboo viscose and cotton either 50/50 or 60/40 respectively. I just found a source for the bamboo viscose/cotton blend in a natural color (I haven't found any that is bleached) and I'm wondering how it will take dye. Have you worked with any blends?
@alixvictoria5166
@alixvictoria5166 5 лет назад
Thank you! :) I do enjoy working with blends, I've worked with quite a few silk blends, but my favourite blend would probably be 50%cotton 50% silk. Did you know that silk can be dyed using the fibre reactive method as well as the acid method? It's pretty versatile! The only bamboo I have worked with was a 51%bamboo49%silk blend, which I dyed using the fibre reactive method using soda ash. The yarn turned out beautifully bright and are skeins 5,6,7 & 9 from the top in this picture here facebook.com/spellboundweaving/photos/a.996057077137282/1931446320265015/?type=3&theater The only thing to be aware of is that when using fibre reactive dyes on silk, the colour may not be 100% true to the swatch, so always sample first. :)
@garboabbott9974
@garboabbott9974 5 лет назад
The silk is gorgeous! Is it as soft as it looks? Where do you find these blends? I bought Felicia Lo's new book Dyeing to Knit and Spin. She also says the procion mx dyes can be used with silk (and also wool with heat and citric acid). Sadly I'm so allergic to wool and other protein fibers. As a knitter I've coveted those beautiful colorways and decided to try to dye my own fibers but I need to experiment with the blends to get the drape and other characteristics of a wool knitted garment. Do you have a Ravelry group?
@alixvictoria5166
@alixvictoria5166 5 лет назад
Silk is gorgeous and soft. There are some really interesting blends out there, such as silk/nettle, silk/linen, silk/bamboo, silk/seacell! I have a few different sources for fibres, Thread Collective is my go-to Australian supplier, Saltwater Rose Threads is another one out of the UK. You can also find some lovely blends on Etsy. I don't have a ravelry group, i've never been great at knitting!
