Thanks for making this Davie. I do appreciate your “feet on the ground” approach to fly tying, keeping things simple and basic. A pot, a splash guard, and a hairdryer and anyone can have the colors they need.
Hello Mrs McPhail, nice to see you in the video. Last time Davie did a dying video, he waited till you were out at the shops and used all your best pans..
Thanks very much for sharing Davie that was very interesting! I would love to see how you dye a cape in Irish claret colours like a deep red based claret and black claret. Many thanks.
An awesome video on dying feathers!! You explained each step to where any novice can follow the process from start to finish!! Thanks Davie for this video, it’s much appreciated!!
Thanks for showing us how you dye it’s a confidence thing with me as some dyes you don’t need a lot and some you need a bit more so it’s good to see how it should be done
Another master class video Davie! Nice to see you enlisted the help of the "kitchen police" ;o) I've yet to try dyeing materials, yet, but I have washed feathers, on the skin and loose, as well as fur pelts and tails. Sometimes they're very dirty, especially deer tails. So I use a laundry stain remover called OxiClean, and a dish soap like Dawn. The Oxiclean stain remover comes in a spray bottle, I'm sure it's the same as the powdered OxiClean with water added. So wearing gloves, I give the material a few squirts, work it in, then it goes into a vessel of warm water and Dawn. Agitate and soak for up to ten minutes or so. Then rinse. It makes the material clean and bright, the white on feathers and hair practically glows. I usually dry between towels or the loose stuff like you do with a hair dryer. All the best to you and your "helper" :o)
That's handy. I have a ton of dyes for wood working so I'll just use em for fly tying too! I'll save a fortune dying my own feathers rather than buying em all different colors.
I greatly appreciate all your videos Davie. I just got a bunch of Jacquard’s Acid Dyes that I’m gonna try but it uses citric acid or vinegar so I’m gonna try both & see the differences.
Great dyeing video mate. I enjoy learning more from the Master. Thanks for sharing another great video with us all. How’s the family doing? Have a super day. Best Regards from West Virginia, Ken 🦆🦃🦗
I dye stuff myself but it's better watching you. Funny enough I don't rinse the fairy suds of the feathers before dying them. Thanks again Davie for another interesting video.
Can you possibly do a grizzle cape👀 got a couple capes to half then dye buy a little scared of the grizzle cape. looking to go olive and yellow. Awesome as usual👌
Hi Dominque, Put the feathers over some steam like I do in the video I have attached which should help, let me know how you get on.. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fZSRIsFV-RA.html All the very best Davie
Thanks Davie, I do prefer to dye my own feathers so it's always good to see how you do it with different materials. Who's the owner of the rogue slippers in the kitchen? You getting into Christmas spirit already with your wee elf helpers? 😂😉
Hi Steve, It was the good lady and she can be a good help if I am honest at times but I think she only does this to stop me making a mess😂.. All the very best Davie
Great video. I really enjoy and learn a lot from your videos on how to work with materials. Would it be possible to do one on prepping Bronze Mallard feathers for Spey fly wings. I try to tie these, but struggle on how to prep the wings and tie them in. Thank you.
Very informative, I really like the hairdryer trick. I was impressed at how fast and beautiful the feathers turned out. What type of dye is that? Thanks again !!
Hi Mike, I am glad yo enjoyed the video and the dyes I use are from Veniards.. ATB Davie. www.fishingmegastore.com/fly-tying-dye/veniard-dyes-for-fly-tiers~480.html
Good video again davie started dying my own capes while ago after watching video you put up a while ago hope that wasn't the making sure you didn't burn the pot or make a mess😁
Another excellent informative video from you, Davie a question for you I have tyed flys on and off for 30 plus years and still have feathers and seals fur dubbing from way back they still look ok and was wondering if they deteriorate with the passing of time.
Hi MrAlamo1957, I have old fur which is nearly 100 years old and it is still perfect so I'm sure your's should be ok, I have also many other materials which are just as old and are perfect...I'm glad you liked the video.. All the very best Davie..
Hi Davie. I tie a variant of Iain Bains fly which I really like with yellow, red and black component colours - the main difference is I veil the tail with a cut out GP rump feather as used in the Kylie fly and I use a blue guinea fowl throat hackle. I am in the process of dying the GP tippet feathers red - could you advise the best source of quality dye - where do you acquire your dye from? Many thanks and regards. Phil
Morning Wan, I use Veniard dyes though you can use other dyes but the colours you can buy from Veniards are mixed to suit the flies we tye... All the very best Davie
Morning Ruth, No the dyes I use come from Veniards a wholesaler of fly tying materials here in the uk though they do sell around the world..The colours they sell suit the fly tying world though it doesn't mean you can't use dyes meant for clothing as I know some tyers do...Just give the dyes you can buy a go and see how you get on.. All the very best Davie..
Hi @hectatusbreakfastus6106, I use Veniard dyes so I have attached a link to them for you to see though this company is a wholesale company so you will need to find a shop that stock there materials..www.veniard.com/veniard-dyes-tube/p/5668 All the very best Davie..
Hi Harald, You really want them to be curved as they fish better so I would just leave them as they are though they will straighten out a bit when fished so you may have to curve them with your nail to get them to move better.. All the very best Davie..
Hi John, I've not really used fabric dyes so I'm not sure if you would get this colour though a Veniards magenta dye will give you the nice bright colour that makes this fly work...You should be able to find Veniard dyes on the internet quite easy if you live in the UK and Ireland but they also have stockists throughout the world..I have attached a link for you to see..www.veniard.com/stockists All the vert best Davie..
Hi Kris, I use Veniards dyes and yes you can dye deer, calf and artic runner though calf and the arctic runner will need to stay in the dye a bit longer and you'll need to give it a good wash which will help..The Arctic Runner I have dyed in the past had a stain repellent on them which can stop the dye taking.. All the very best Davie..
Hi Peter, I use Veniard dyes so I have attached a link to them for you to see...ATB Davie.. www.fishingmegastore.com/fly-tying-dye/veniard-dyes-for-fly-tiers~480.html
Hi Rich, I have attached a link to the Veniard dyes for you to see..www.fishingmegastore.com/fly-tying-dye/veniard-dyes-for-fly-tiers~480.html ATB Davie..
Hi anirishcast, I would although I would give the cape a longer wash to make sure it's clean and soaked through so the dye goes all the way in..I'm glad you enjoyed the video.. All the very best Davie
