Genius way to do this technique! I love having the mason jars all in together- It's sooo much neater and feels easier to stay in control of the colors being exactly where you put them .The ties are another" better way " easier to grab, and hold onto than anything else I've used . it seems much easier all around. I think that a tiny amount (maybe 2.5 ml of your diluted stock) added to the two end colors (pink into the yellow, yellow into the pink) would provide a more harmonious gradient. Right now the two ends are very sharply delineated from the three in the middle, and just a tiny amount of the other would soften the harshness and make them blend better.

Love this video~! I've been looking for years for two different gradient yarns ... one from a blood red (deep) to a chocolate brown. The other a deep evergreen to a chocolate brown. Both would be in my living room area and I wanted to fashion a throw out of it. Very rich and delicious. lol Not even sure it's possible. Had even contemplated one massive skein from blood red to chocolate to evergreen. Humm... gonna give that some more thunk (heavy thinking). ;)

For the pot you use with immersion dyeing, do you need to use separate (non-food) ones? Since you're using the glass jars and keeping them away from food surfaces, it seems to me that you would be pretty safe. Thanks in advance! P.S. the introduction of reusable zip ties to dyeing is a GAME CHANGER for me.

Whenever I'm using commercial acid dyes I always use a dedicated dye pot - even if I'm using mason jars. I'd rather be overly cautious and safe with this.

They've changed the listing back and forth on me a few times. Ugh.) The ones I use are 12" reusuable zip ties. This is exactly what I would do. If you were to wind your minis two at a time (but on opposite sides of the niddy noddy - sort of like how I unravel sock blanks ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rFfuwWXeDWk.html) then each mini could be approximately the same size.

I appreciate questions and requests! I don't know much about prochem dyes to be honest. I just published a video using Country Classic dyes and shared my first thoughts on those. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-R0vRgxo6FBo.html These dyes have citric acid mixed in, so it might be similar to the one shot ones. I will need to test out these one shot dyes. In general, I found that I prefer "standard" acid dyes because I like to control the amount of acid that I add. SInce I have a good feel for saturation and how much dye to use with things like dharma and jacquard, it felt strange for me to use the country classic dyes and have no real sense of how saturatedthe color owuld be per the amount of dye that I used. I hope this helps for now!

Omg I love 💗 these colors girl! Just missing a neon purple lol Are these dharma or something else? I need to get me some of these. Are they cheap? Where exactly did u get those bigger thicker sized reusable zip ties at? They are more thicker than the other ones.
@ChemKnitsTutorials
@ChemKnitsTutorials 4 года назад
These are dharma acid dyes, and I find them very affordable. I purchase the 2 oz jars and they last a REALLY long time.

Whoops I added this above, but adding it here, too: The zip ties I used should be linked in the video description. (Although sometimes Amazon changes the listing that I've linked to which is annoying, so double check that they are still the reusable ones. They've changed the listing back and forth on me a few times. Ugh.) The ones I use are 12" reusuable zip ties. The ones that KnitCrate sent out are thinner and aren't reusable, but I'm happy they decided to include them.

I'm new at yarn dyeing and don't know all the terms. So what do you mean by a yarn spinner dryer and what does it look like? Or do you have a video for that? Thank you
@ChemKnitsTutorials
@ChemKnitsTutorials 2 года назад
This is the spin dryer I use for yarn - it just removes a lot of liquid making the yarn a bit fluffier since it weighs less while it dries. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cDMp-qz1Yf4.html The one I use is discontinued, but there are a lot of similar models. Before I had a spin dryer I used an old salad spinner!

So i attempted dying my own yarn in multi colors and failed (not really failed but not the intended result just something new) with that method. I think I like this method better. It is for sure a cleaner method than the one I did before
@ChemKnitsTutorials
@ChemKnitsTutorials 3 года назад
I've found that if I approach my dyeing projects with a "I wonder what will happen if I try xyz" type attitude I tend to be really excited by the results. The times when I have a very specific vision in mind are the times I'm more likely to feel disappointed. :D That being said, this technique is a LOT of fun. It is a bit easier to make miniskeins that aren't connected to dye the colors, but having them connected is a lot of fun, too!

@ChemKnitsTutorials

I don't currently have these in stock, but gradients are typically more expensive than my typical 100g skein of sock yarn because of the added labor.

Yes! It works. I prefer acid dyes on 100% wool but rit definitely works

Yes! Here is a list of all of my favorite tools etc www.chemknits.com/2019/07/the-best-tools-equipment-for-dyeing.html The exact pot I use is the SALT® 8 qt. Stainless Steel 4-Piece Multi-Cooker from bed bath and beyond. (I also have the 12 qt pot in the same brand.)

Has anyone been unhappy with what you dyed for them? And what do you do if they truly dislike what came from your dyepot? I mean if they sponsor one of the videos. I forgot to tell you im in love with your neons. I got them once or twice with neon Wilton's and i am doing more next week. Im thinkin about getting some Dharma dyes to start making more colors and deeper saturation. Do you still like koolaid and food colors Rebecca?
@ChemKnitsTutorials
@ChemKnitsTutorials 4 года назад
I haven't heard if someone has been unhappy yet. If they have been they haven't told me. This is one of the big reasons why I ask for colors to avoid so that I can try to create something they might enjoy. :D I absolutely still love food coloring! There are some more food coloring videos in the pipeline. :D Wilton color right remains my favorite.

I released a few more slots on Monday and they sold out almost immediately. They're restocking less frequently right now because my production times are a lot longer than normal. 😞 If you're interested, you can send me a message on Etsy to be on a waiting list so I can message you and they restock again.

Can you use any type of yarn to dye
@ChemKnitsTutorials
@ChemKnitsTutorials 4 года назад
Yes and no. For using acid dyes or food coloring you want a protein based yarn (wool alpaca silk). For cotton you need fiber reactive dyes. For synthetics (acrylic and polyester) you need dyes that are marketed for dyeing synthetic fibers.

How do you know how much acid to add?
@ChemKnitsTutorials
@ChemKnitsTutorials 2 года назад
Great question, with my tap water, I often use 2 Tbsp white vinegar in 8 cups of water as a starting point. If I want colors to bind faster then I add more, slower I add less. My tap water is slightly acidic to start with, so some people may need to start with more acid. Ultimately, I came to these ratios with trial and error.
@jadagraff4026
@jadagraff4026 2 года назад
@@ChemKnitsTutorials thank you so much! I was afraid if I don’t add enough acid it wouldn’t adhere right so I’m probably over acidifying my water 🤣 but that’s ok
@ChemKnitsTutorials
@ChemKnitsTutorials 2 года назад
@@jadagraff4026 FLuorescent dyes like these do require more time, heat and acid often to strike. They tend to strike slower than other dyes.
