DYI Greenhouse Garden Ideas | Tiny Dome | Luxury Glamping Dome

This video shows my journey in building a 1v Geodesic dome meant for glamping, building a greenhouse, or as a tiny home. The more I see the structure every day, the more I want to convert it to a Greenhouse. This video should serve to explore the different alternatives for the use of this type of structure. If you're looking for any DIY greenhouse garden ideas, this structure can serve as a good greenhouse garden due to its shape. The only thing missing will be adding some translucent plastic or plexiglass to cover the structure for maximum sunlight. This structure could also serve as a tiny dome house or a luxury glamping dome to do Airbnb. In this case, it would definitely take more resources to complete.
What exactly is glamping? Simply put, it's glamorous camping. It's a more prestigious outdoor experience for those who no longer want to sleep in a vinyl tent in 5°F weather; instead, you're sleeping in an enclosed canvas tent with a memory foam mattress, mini-fridge, and a wood stove.
This dome was built using Stromberg's Starplate System as it facilitates the process of building these types of structures. If build properly based on the specifications, the dome is designed to support over 10,000 lbs of snow on the roof.

next time...4.5" or 5" bolts, right? this was me in '84. I built a raised wood deck on 12" high 10"dia. conc. piers. nice!! insulated & drywalled, mine had a loft suspended from the center plate, and two roof side plates. cable-suspended. the double-doors were the most-finicky to design/build. needs ventilation, a window is nice. so's a skylight. the acoustics in that place is AMAZING :-)

genius design!! Low cost materials and construction method - huge scale. Only problem is that in my county I would need a building permit for a structure that size. hahahaha. Or else if I move it every six months - and take it apart - then it's a "shelter."

Hello great video. In the description you stated " If build properly based on the specifications, the dome is designed to support over 10,000 lbs of snow on the roof. " Can you let me know how you came to this number. I have looke don the website and cannot find specifics for weight load.
@JeanCast
@JeanCast Год назад
You can find this info on the specifications that comes with the startplate. It also specify the size limit for a 2x4 stud and the weight load it will withstand. On my build, I didn’t add any additional support structures as specified on the manufacturer’s manual. Please follow what the manufacturer suggests as my build may not fit the purpose of what you are looking for.

Hey JC, You presented a good demonstration. What are the length and diameter of the carriage bolts? What is the weight of the entire frame?
@JohnGuest45
@JohnGuest45 3 года назад
Putting the 5 roof timbers on is easier if you tip the structure over :)
@JeanCast
@JeanCast 3 года назад
I thought of it but using 9 foot long wet pressure treated lumber makes the task more difficult to flip it over due to its weight once the studs are all connected. Also, I didn’t want to put the structure’s entire weight on a single beam and cause too much stress to that single beam.
@JohnGuest45
@JohnGuest45 3 года назад
@@JeanCast The forces are transferred to all the vertices so it would handle the flip :) On the plus side, you proved it can be built by one person, i`ve built a few 3v domes by myself but the struts were shorter and lighter than 9ft 2x4`s
@JeanCast
@JeanCast 3 года назад
@@JohnGuest45 TBH for a second I doubted that I was going to able to do it. It took longer than needed but I managed to do it. :)
@JohnGuest45
@JohnGuest45 3 года назад
@@JeanCast Failure to cross the finish line is not an option, you would have found a way to get it done :) What do you plan to cover it with?.
@JeanCast
@JeanCast 3 года назад
@@JohnGuest45 I will be using this as a greenhouse. Therefore, I will be using polycarbonate or greenhouse plastic cover. I might start with the plastic translucent covering as it's more affordable. Construction material is at an all times high at the time... There will be a part 2 for this video in which I'll be covering installing the support beams, installation of the covers, etc...

So, JC, when you have the time, could you please confirm my math on your structure's dimensions? If each stud is 9', does that mean that your maximum interior floor space dimension (1st bracket to 3rd bracket) is 15' 10"? Or, that a right-angle measurement from a stud to an opposite bracket is 15' 3"? I'm trying to build a pool table room, and tunnel geodesics are waaaay too complicated! (Were those bolts a bit short?)

Air bnb. Can a person use longer lumber?
@orangezeroalpha
@orangezeroalpha Год назад
I don't think ther e is anything stopping you, but it seems it would be require a large ladder and some help to get the "roof" set up. Also more weight. I was wondering if there are ways to strengthen where the bolt goes in some way. Maybe some additional metal bracing... easy way would maybe be to have a bracket on the top and bottom of each board and a bolt goes through each one. Have you done anything yet? I wanted a 10ft dome for sure, if I can safely do it.
@Pabkojdim
@Pabkojdim 11 месяцев назад
@@orangezeroalpha It's possible. There's just no liability when it comes down because you expanded it beyond manufacture recommendation
@Pabkojdim
@Pabkojdim 11 месяцев назад
@@orangezeroalpha Also theres hole in the bracket if you want to put more struts in between to support it.
@orangezeroalpha
@orangezeroalpha 11 месяцев назад
@@Pabkojdim I realize in most discussions of structural integrity/strength of geodesic domes they mostly ignore 1v, but I've never seen the math. You are limited by the bolts and the thickness of the metal plates.
@orangezeroalpha
@orangezeroalpha 11 месяцев назад
@@Pabkojdim I noticed that, and I have seen a few 1v around that are done that way with extra supports. I've been contemplating how best to fill in those big triangles for aesthetics and function at the same time. Not sure what looks good, and assume there are ways that would be structurally good but not look nice.

I used 2x4x10 and I cut it to 9 ft as the specification states that that’s the longest for this plates. I recommend to add additional supports if you are building this structure with 9ft long lumber.
