Do you separate the does from the herd when they are giving birth?

Yes- kind of! We keep them in a smaller area so I can keep an eye on who's pregnant, but there's enough space they can find a place by themselves to kid. After that it depends on timing and behavior. I'll move first time moms into the kidding pen after they had their babies for bonding. I'll also move moms who have other moms (or to be) trying to help mom or wanting to take their babies into their own pens. After 12-48 hours they get moved to a group pen with all the moms and babies. If I happen to see one that's in labor and it's night time or I have to run to town, I'll pen them up in advance. If the moms are doing a great job tending to/keeping track of their kids I may move them right into the group pen of kids/moms. This tends to be my older does. Overall I find they do better kidding in the main pen than being separated from the herd - then I move them afterwards. They're herd animals so often it creates more stress on them to be alone. But every goat/situation is different!! as you can tell by my long response!
