To the guys saying what took the crash trucks so long, I'd like to mention that those vehicles have to haul a lot of fire fighting foam and are able to reach a top speed of almost 80 mph; federal law states that all crash trucks at any airport must arrive at the scene of an emergency in 4 minutes of the pilots calling for emergency vehicles.
Shaun robinson :: The guy on the video was quite annoying. It took you a whole three minutes to get there like you were sitting in your trucks ready to roll because you had ESP that the aircraft was going to have a fire. Most people don't know that you have to get routing instructions from the tower/ground and told where you never to hold and when you can continue. Otherwise you might get hit by a DC-10 coming in and it runs your ass over. Now you have two aircraft on fire. It's not like you're a city fire engine that can run red lights.
To tell you the truth Shaun, it sometimes seems like firefighters magically show up. Police, Fire and Ambulance services are not professions that tend to be slacker-tolerant.... thankfully.
People forget how big airports are... The runways alone at large airports are close to 2 miles long. If the station is on the other side of the field they likely had a 2-3 mile drive to get to the plane. Not to mention the time lost in calling them and gearing up. 3 minutes is honestly pretty fucking impressive.
A case anyone didn't know that is not me making the comments about the fire trucks I appreciate all First Responders and my family is part of that family
Firefighters do not sit outside their station searching for planes on fire on the runway. They only respond when they are requested by the Air Traffic Controllers. When ATC saw the engine engulfed in fire, they first informed the pilot so he could make decisions accordingly. Then they called the fire services. They even informed the pilot that they were calling the fire services. So 3 minutes was actually a very good response time on the part of the fire services bearing in mind that this was not an emergency landing. The aircraft caught fire while on the ground. Nobody was expecting that and nobody was ready for that. During an emergency landing, the fire services are informed long before the plane touches down. Thus they have time to suit up and prepare for the arrival of the stricken aircraft. That's why they respond a lot faster in such cases since they will already be out next to the runway by the time the aircraft touches down.
Actually - and I'm not saying these fire fighters were slacking: they had a good response time - I've heard ATC recordings where the fire department is already rolling when atc makes the call because they're monitoring the tower and ground controllers in the station. I can't remember specifically but I want to say LAX or KSFO was one of the airports.
Gotta find out where your going, put your gear on and get to the appliance from what you were doing and start the thing up and turn on all the whizzbang shit before you go out the doors. Then navigate taxiways and runways ensuring you dont get run down by a 747, while coordinating with tower. 60 seconds extra to do all that is not unreasonable.
@@jbutzy1 yeah they made it in 1:50 according to the incident report. Which is top notch considering that it's basically the furthest point from the station
I am a U.S. Air Force firefighter veteran. The fire services has to be able to get to any point on the airport in 3 minutes, or less. That's FAA rules.
The FAA requires a 3 minute response time for the first fire apparatus, and four minutes for each additional. That's just for training purposes. The actual time response for an actual crash or emergency is "as soon as practicable" believe it or not. So they kicked ass on the response.
3 mins is actually good. Considering they need to get geared up start the trucks and drive em possibly more than a kilometer considering the airport is such a big place
+krelshell4 Ha, those were almost my exact words when he started complaining. This guy would have lost his mind watching that Okinawa airport fire where it took something like 15 minutes for the first truck to arrive, by which time the plane had literaly burnt in half.
+krelshell4 I spoke to an airport fire crew before, was at a smaller airport through, in Ireland, still a huge area. they said they had to be anywhere in the airport grounds in under 90 seconds. i didnt believe him but apparently they manage it in drills.
The ATC could have send the engines out a few seconds earlier. The first reports were of heavy fuel leaks from the engine. That's when you send out the fire alarm... But they waited until engine fire was called.
Yeah, I work at KJAC, and it could take that long to respond there, even though there's only one taxiway. Luckily, FD is on top of their game. We had a lighting strike light a fire outside the fence and they were on the way within 30 seconds.
Try driving a 100,000lb water tank on wheels to an emergency in progress without flipping it while the roll alarm is blaring at you at even the slightest of turns.

Yes, I agree. A grand total of 6 minutes from start of incident to control and resolution is excellent. There is a great video (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cPRq9CCsmNo.html) showing where the fire services building is, and where the plane came to a stop, etc.... It doesn't look very far, but it's 2km distance, that takes time for big heavy trucks. I think fire services did a great job, well done!
It's gone now, I forget when they moved it, but it was there for awhile. An interesting fact. The plane was taxiing to take off, but since the winds were out of the west that day, they were going to the east end of the runway to take off heading west (planes must land and take off into the wind generally). If the flow had been to the east like it usually is, they would have taxied west to the west end to take off heading east. There happens to be a viewing area at the west end of that runway, and since it was the #1 (left) engine that was on fire, this would have happened about the time they were passing by the viewing area, which would have made it very interesting for anyone who happened to be there. (this took place on a weekday, so there may not have been many people there at that time, but it's interesting what could have been. As it turned out, the fire was contained quickly, so if it had been at the other end, anyone there would not have been in danger, but at the beginning, you don't know that. I hope if that had ben the case, anyone that was there would have gotten the hell outta there, I know I would have. I did get a pic of that plane when it was parked (right across the field from the viewing area). Once I got one, along with a different Dynamic 767 that was about to start the takeoff roll 🙂 I think Dynamic was rebranded as the 3rd version of Eastern Airlines, and they fly out of MIA now.
The Fire Station is not right off the Runway. They also need clearance from the Tower beforethey roll onto TaxiwaYs & Runways, most importantly, they're hauling 20,000 gallons of water & Foam. You cant go 75 mph
They take long because they don't look for fires and the airport is big plus the truck is very heavy and they gotta be careful because there are airplanes that were taxiing with running engines, they can't get blown away so they gotta manuever correctly
All that training, nothing happens for years, then BOOM it's make or break time. There seems to have been a LARGE increase in engine fires over the past 3-4 years. We operated 727.s DC9,s for 30 years, never had a fire warning. WHAT"S GOING ON ? The Fire Rescue did well IMHO.
Hello, Question to all Aviation/Airport firefighters: As a volunteer firefighter i was told when visited an international airport that big commercial aircrafts airport must be able to despatch within 90 SECONDS from emergency declaring to first Crash trucks on spot. In that International airport they needed to build 2 more stations 1 24/7 with 2 striker / Oshkosh type monsters and 1 station that is 07:00 - 18:00 near the terminals to support conventional fire services to airport city to reach the 90 sec from alarm to scene. Was it something with that International air port or is it true standards? Thanks
To the person recording this, great shot but know your facts before making comments like "it takes 3 minutes to there" ! A 6x6 Striker has about 36,500 pounds of liquid weight and the 8x8 has around 53,000 pounds of just liquid weight, never mind the weight of the truck. By the time the people gear up and trucks are rolling, 3 mins is pretty impressive!
Richter Batoon What window exits? There is one forward door and one rear door on each side. And one over wing exit on each side. The overwing exit on the right side looks to be open.
Huh? They dont sit and wait while they take off or land LOL. They arrived within the "training" time which is usually much faster then real life. Watch sime videos of what all goes into these trucks responding. They have to get permission to cross every runway and intersection.
