+Jan Beckhoff the plane is going so fast the camera can't catch it if the camera was fixed, moving the camera allows it to keep up with the action and actually see the plane in the video and not just a flash of color in front of the lens, see Spencers Kinetic 100 record video at Norco, and you will see what I mean.
Thanks for all the replies. Spencer has been working his brain and fingers to the bone on a new Kinetic swept wing sailplane. Big problems going too much faster as many know.
I wish the cameraman would not have panned all the time. I think the plane would have been more visible. Perhaps resolution would have been better, as the only moving object would have been the plane. Static resolution is higher than dynamic resolution. I volunteer to try that!
Wish I could see your plane. Insane speeds, I remember when they started hitting 200-300 thought that was fast this is nuts how do you swtay in ffront of the plane at that speed, is it purely muscle memory, or does your mind get in front of the plane at that speed, very curious about this. Thanks for sharing. PS lol.....saw it, managed to catch just a glimpse when its down in the valley.
I'm guessing it will require a specifically designed flying machine. A normal (sic) glider shape may not be suitable. Maybe a flying wing? Penetration will start to become a big issue at 768 mph. What about a 3mtr all carbon Weasel ??
+Timothy Williams I just don't see how having something going that fast above your head could be safe. It could fly off course very easily or break apart and kill you.
Timothy Williams There is a rock wall we generally stay behind and there are some very loarge boulders the guys running the radar guns stand behind. Only the pilot is left standing alone during the flight, it's pretty easy to avoid yourself.
Wider Angle Lens = smaller target image = not easy to see, follow and watch. I am a little surprised that video on board (not pretty obviously of a real record attempt) seems not to have surfaced, a faired in Mobius would add insignificant weight and drag in general flying. Must try strapping one on my long suffering sacrificial JW60.
I assume you're kidding around, right? You have to hit the mid-700MPH range to break the sound barrier. 505 MPH is an amazing achievement for a dynamic soaring sailplane.
