@@jayplayspoorly8293 Personally I rarely ever had a problem with Auto Lock On in 4. I usually use Charge Attacks in the Older Games and when attacking Crowds of Enemies and it really helps. In 2 and 3 it was a lot more problematic since Charge Attacks didn't feel as good in those games
@@jayplayspoorly8293 Over half the roster in DW4 is hindered badly by auto lock, and characters such as Lu Bu, auto lock is almost irrelevant considering his moveset/AoE/range. You have to do a square > square > 🛑 combo before you get hit in the back > reface character to who you want to be facing/attacking > go into a full combo if auto locked on right character. However dueling, more aggressive enemy peon AI, and the risk/reward factor of dueling, imo makes DW4 the best DW game. But I can always respect someone picking 5 over 4 as there favorite. 5 is still more fun to play than DW8XL however to me. But I prefer the classic DW/SW games.
True, but if I were to play dynasty warriors 4 without changing directions, then I can do it better. As one of my many uncles who always came to my room, little'ol me was forced to let them play the gane and I learned that if you make your character turn right and block, your be able to see what's happening, and able to either parry, or beat the living crap out of the AI! Though on pvp mode, dead mostly, especially my uncles.
This was nostalgic. I remember going into the vault/encyclopedia just to read the lore about the three kingdoms and their officers, all the while listening to that amazing theme in the background. I was 12 when this came out, what a time..
DW5 pros: - Graphics (more soldiers onscreen and better view distance) - No autolock - Better Jump Charge attacks - 2 players in Xtreme Mode and Empires - Better Edit Mode DW4 pros: - Much more aggressive AI (and difficulty overall) - Duels - 5th weapons - Versus Mode - More costumes There's more but don't need to write a wall of text here lol.
This is what I was waiting for, so get ready for a novella. This game still has some of my favorite visual designs for the cast until Dynasty Warriors 9. The weapon weight system is something that I always thought was tacked on for no real reason and still hold these views. I will argue that the damage increase from heavy weapons being negligible is completely untrue. Heavy weapons give a 25% boost to attack strength whereas light weapons give a 25% strength reduction. For some characters, this strength boost is almost insane (see Da Qiao with her 4th weapon). Other characters (points to Diao Chan with her 4th weapon) this hinders them to near unplayability. There was potential, but the inability to customize weapon weight held it back. PRASE THE GODS that lock on died here. It was a stupid decision to include and is now a relic of the past, where it belongs. The actual combat here was, for the most part, what I consider peak Dynasty Warriors. Everyone who used to be a clone now plays differently from each other that they can hardly be considered semi clones. The overhauled Air charges are probably my favorite gameplay change. The thing with this game is where you can see the start of the shift to a cinematic experience as opposed to a tactical one. The big, over the top True Musou finishers and the character driven stories are shifting it from an army to an army of one with drama on the side. Story wise, for the time, it was the best we've had. Now, that title is firmly in DW7+XL's hands. As a side note, this game is the one where I learned that in Zhuge Liang's C4 was him throwing his fan in a circle, not a big tornado attack. The voice acting in this was probably as good as DW gets for its English dub. Characters sound different enough from each other that I don't mind anyone in particular. Warriors Orochi 1 is where certain actors got shifted and I think we got them all spot on. RIP Michelle Ruff as SSX and Zhen Ji. I didn't mind any character additions in this game. Everyone's story was fine and gave plenty of personality to the 46 (I think) characters in it. Hell, this game is where Daqiao went from my favorite character gameplay wise to my favorite character personality wise. Everyone felt fleshed out and like they had a reason to participate. Alas, this is the last game to give all characters spotlight that doesn't feel forced. Take notes, DW9. This is how you do character driven stories. I'm really excited for your 5XL video as that combined with vanilla 5 is PEAK Dynasty Warriors for me. Now that we're here, though, I must wonder if you'll cover the Orochi games as well.
Yeah, 7 finally got around to topping it, but 5’s story was really well done considering comparable 6th gen action game stories, and the fact that there were almost 50 of them they had to do. 5 + XL is also my peak, so I’m pretty excited to do it! Hopefully it won’t take as long as previous. I have the gameplay recording done and know what I want to say, just have to find the time to sit down and knock the vid out 😅. Thanks for the comment!
DW5 is simply the best Warriors game ever made! The franchise was improving with every entry and got to its peak in 5, and unfortunately gone downhill after it. KOEI did a good job fixing problems of the previous DW4. The most important one is of course removing that terrible auto-lock, I find it very hard to enjoy DW4 gameplay after playing 5. Also the voice acting is pretty solid here, everyones voice feels unique and fitting, and it’s the birth of some iconic lines like “Can anybody provide me with a decent challenge?” and “My ambitions cannot be stopped!”
I def prefer 4 and 3 over 5. Literally the only thing this game has over either imo is the lack of lock on in a direction. Otherwise, imo, it’s pretty stale by comparison. This game imo started the downfall with what it did to peons, stripping bodyguards, and focusing on 1 vs 1,000 more than ever over fighting with your army.
"Musou" its exact meaning is "Invincible". Shin/Sangoku Musou/真・三國無双 means "True Three Kingdoms Unmatched" or "True Three Kingdoms Invincible". This is what they wanted to create from the start, nostalgic players really need to stop complaining about this crap.
Back in the day when I went to Gamestop to purchase DW5, the one I went to was out of copies, but they did have a copy of DW5: Empires. I ended up playing the hell out of that and had some of the most fun I've ever had with a game. Due to that, though, DW5 is the only main line DW game that I still haven't played to this day. Just recently found copies of both DW4 and 5, playing thru 4 now. It's been so long since I played 5 Empires, good to remember I have the death of the auto-lock coming soon to reward me when I turn it on! And just watching you get on your horse around enemies shows me the difference in the AI between the games. Soon as I look at my horse on 4, I'm being mauled by 20 soldiers, lmao. Another great review, Jay! Looking forward to the next ones!
Too true about getting in horse. With DW5 onwards, you get a slight "super armor" if soldier ai decides to try and hit you off. But in DW4? You want to get on a horse around even 10 soldiers? PFFFTT yeah no. It one of the most frustrating things about the game.
Defintely review the PSP versions of DW4 DW5 and SW1, would love to hear your thoughts on them if you have the time. Keep up the solid as hell retrospectives brother.
Thanks! I’ll keep it in mind. I’ll have to play a lot more of them, played a lot of the PSP version based on 4 back in the day but not a ton on the other two
I feel like not alot of people do State of War justice, the story in that game (while not groundbreaking by any means) was fun and actually had me invested, like they actually give SW1 Masamune depth, he feels way more like a 3 dimensional character, rather then a kid who just says "imbecile"
Interesting perspective on the enemy AI. I'm not sure if 5's core mechanics can even match up to DMC enemy level difficulty. In a genre like this, the combat wouldn't be very satisfying if the AI gave you too much trouble so you couldn't advance. It would have to incorporate the ally AI into the equation as well, maybe make it so that running across the battlefield straight into the enemy camp would be a suicide mission, that you would have to rely somewhat on your allies. Now that i think of it, that could play into multiplayer as well. Have the main player work on one front while player two works on a different front or support. Then that could lead into an entire tree of possibilities with the Empires spin-offs. Instead of dealing with AI controlled territories, you could enter a game with a few players in a battle royale style grab for power and land, all the while forging alliances and tactics and betrayals and economies with other people. Edit: I just remembered this. In Destiny Mode, enemies are crazy aggressive, and you can very easily get your ass handed to you if you aren't with your assigned officer.
It'd definitely need some tweaking, but I think it could work if programmed in a smart way. There are some DW4 aggression PC mods that, while making the game absolutely chaotic, do show the potential for it
Man, I found your review videos very amazing and I’m pretty enjoyed! But I gotta point out the auto-lock function was no longer there from Dynasty Warriors 4 empires released. And this game has some unique versus mode, and you won’t need a friend now because you can just fight the AI. And the soundtrack of its gallery mode was just beautiful.
Yeah I know, I was talking about it being the first mainline game to have it. Samurai Warriors 1 had it before this game as well. Glad you're enjoying them!
This game needed 5th weapons in XL. Soooooo disappointing. Great video man! I didn't know that the storm harness increased mounted attack. I thought it increased the total xp you got.
I believe that you are correct and that I misspoke 😅. But yeah, XL should’ve had the 5th weapons. No excuse for missing it when the models could’ve just been straight ported over
4 is my favorite but 5 is great. I never had s problem with the voice acting. Imo 4 and 5 had great voice acting compared to the rest of the series. It also has the best empires expansion. Dw5 empire great game. I liked that they used the dw5 characters for the first two warriors orochi games as well.
I liked 3's cheesy dialogue a lot, but generally when I think of any given characters voice actor in my head, either their 4/5 VA rendition is what pops in my head
You hit on something that'd probably be among my top 5 complaints. Removal of reinforcement checkpoints and diminishing the importance of bases. I like your take on difficulty. More aggressive ai. Organized formations. That'd be a step in the right direction, but instead we got dummer ai who do not form up but instead mob up creating fodder where 1000+ ko counts are easily achieved. Sad. Ko counts of 500 or less would be far more interesting imo. 5 was the best the series has ever been. In spite of the wrong direction it took with certain key elements. It really was the first game that tipped koei's hand at developing the series. Make noticable improvements, but for every improvement cut, devolve, or unnecessarily change elements we appreciated.
Regarding AI, I'm looking forward to Wo Long for this reason. Of course, in that case the difficulty probably swung a bit too much to the opposite end for a conventional "Warriors" title, but if it's anything like Nioh was compared to Samurai Warriors, they'll do Three Kingdoms better than Omega Force has been doing it.
DW4 had way too a little enemy troops. When you think about that DW2 was like a Changbang Zhao Yun simulator mode facing thousands enemy troops. DW5 was like going back to the roots. My favorite of Dynasty Warriors game. Loved DW games till the number 6. It was so bad and games made after 6 looks pretty... Gay.
DW4 is clearly the superior game all around, but low-key 5 is better "built" okay for example the models on 4 are more realistic moving but on 5 It has a more updated brighter 3D look that balances the colours and the combos indeed are slightly smoother with better built environments. I love the game's Chinese Version that's archived online out there cos It blends the more authentic chinese feel when I play it as it should be.
2, 3 & 4 are my favourites, 5 is close behind but I did feel it was here it started taking back steps. I miss the challenge of early DW games, they got too easy
2:34 Pardon? The fuck do you mean augment? Is there still shit in this game i still haven't discovered?! I'VE BEEN PLAYING SINCE THE RELEASE OF 5XL, SINCE I WAS SIX YEARS OLD WHAT DO YOU MEAN THERE'S STILL MORE????
Since I skipped DW4 from 3 to 5, I'm more bias towards this entry over 4 naturally. I still consider DW3 my all time favorite along with DW5E and DW8 XL
5 was the first I ever played as a kid and fell in love with the franchise ever since. I just wished I knew the differences between the Extreme Legends and Empire variations back then. 5 will always have a place in my heart as it inspired me to buy 7 for the PS3. But now, with the PS5, I'm cautious about buying 8 or 9 for fear of either of them not living up to the expectations 5 instilled upon me.
this was my favorite game! i love having a seperate story for each character. i actually maxed out every character in this game before moving on to the xtreme legends and clearing that one out too! i did this for part 3 as well. i couldn't do it for 4... 'kingdom play' kinda ruined it for me.
One thing never noticed about storm harness I don't think ever gets brought up. I have never once had the horse get scared by officers. It will always ram through them.
Yes! 4E didn’t have it at all. Samurai warriors also didn’t have it. The reason I mentioned it here was because this was the first mainline DW title to not have it, since Empires is more a spin-off/it’s own thing
Ooooh yeah! Bases were actually annoyingly good to have in DW5 + XL. Hey, I honestly think I'd be best to have the mini minions of bodyguards from DW4 and one lieutenant DW5 mashed up together so I don't have just me. Cause I don't know about how y'all feel but I whenever I fight, I feel like I'm supposed to be Lu Bu but I'm just a man who goes solos.... I need help too!! I need my OWN minions... :(
@@MichaelMusou Nah DW5 still has amazing lubu theme though even if it doesn’t has that guitar solo but DW5 opening song intro did have lubu theme which every DW’s opening has lubu theme also and it has guitar solo part on it. Yes I know some people doesn’t agree with me with that but this is just my opinion. I also respect your opinion too even though you are also an DW5 fan like me but different tastes on DW songs and some others which I’m completely fine and understand that point.
While I really like the fact that DW5 no longer has the auto-lock on and the fact that so many characters' movesets are now even more unique and refined, I still very much prefer DW4 over it, the cutscenes in 5 feel so jankie and some what unfinished, my favourite example is Lu Bu's entry at Hulao Gate, soilders just stand there and then randomly turn around and run in the most anticlimactic way possible especially when compared to 4's, the cutscenes are not nearly as polished as 4's were. Another thing is the English voice acting just isn't nearly as good and is overall A LOT more cringe worthy than 4...some of the characters' voices that got re-casted or even some of the new characters (Pang De for example) also don't suit them in my opinion. And each character getting only 5 or so stages is just kinda odd....However what I do think 5 does better than 4 is the Xtreme Legends expansion....the only downside is there are no 5th weapons for the characters. And lastly the AI isn't as aggressive as they were in 4 unless you play on Chaos difficulty, which is kind of a small nitpick but I thought I'd say it anyways. Overall in my opinion DW5 was a relatively solid entry in the franchise but ABSOLUTELY not as good as DW4, not even close. 4 completely blows 5 out of the water for me.
Even though I respect your opinion and kinda agree what you said but I disagree on what you said on the voice acting and the cutscenes in DW5. The voice acting isn’t cringe at all so you misunderstood that part which it supposed to be the worst voice acting for DW9 and I know it your opinion on it but still though. It has one of the best character voices that actually fit the character so well, It so far better than terrible voice acting in DW9 that feel more cringe and bad. The cutscenes are literally the almost the same as DW3 and DW4 since it still a PS2 era level of graphics so it actually not that janky, it still good and ahead for its time for an 2005 game.
@@HungNgo-ir7eq Yes I absolutely agree that DW9 has the worst voice acting LMAO, but for me 4's just sounds a lot better than 5 and I feel 5 is a step back on that, and as for the cutscenes I wouldn't say the graphics is the problem because 5 has slightly better graphics than 4 which makes sense but I feel the animation seems quite odd, maybe go find the Lu Bu cutscene I mentioned or another one I remember being really weird is Guan Yu and Cao Cao riding out of the camp which is the opening cutscene for Guandu in Guan Yu's story, the way the horses turn around doesn't seem it was properly finished, like maybe they kinda rushed it some how idk, I respect your opinion as well and still I don't hate DW5, just think 4 is MUCH better, thank you for keeping your comment polite btw I really appreciate that. XD
Thanks for the review! I have to say, I'll never understand how people can prefer DW5 over 8 or even 7. Granted, it's still fun, but the game feels incredibly dated and janky nowadays. You can't control the camera, which is already too close to the characters, making combat feel messy and unwieldy. Characters are super slow and the graphics don't hold up (except cutscenes, which still look good). DW8 feels miles better to play by comparison. Is it just the more aggressive IA?
Most of the people I know really enjoyed 7/8 and just don't really consider them to be the same as 4/5, myself included. I don't think it's a question of which is better technically, just which set you played more of when the games came out and have more nostalgia for.
Because DW became a joke following this. There was no shota/kpop singer, the design of the character was serious. Each character was important, there was no "I'm here because I'm related to ...". The story was better told, no flanderisation of BENEVOLENCE etc. The modes were better Xtreme and destiny. Since the characters were serious and not just some joke a la Dong Zhuo, Yuan Shao, Liu Bei (compare those 3 between DW5 and after), everything felt more intense. There was some challenge and not just being a god on the map, for example the moral mattered and your allies could be usefull. Also each character was unique with his own weapon/moveset. Most people still dream today of Sun Ce's tonfa, Zhang He's claws, Gan Ning's sword, DW5 got this effect on people. I would also add that there were more cutscenes and unique dialogues (check TinyCaterpillar channel to realize it). The diary in the musou mode give each character a distinct personality and must have been a lot of work.
