I was very skeptical about Pulstar Plugs. After installation, my Jeep can now do wheelies, the rip in my seat in now gone, and ice cream tastes sweeter. Thanks, Pulstar!

I dyno tested these plugs on an old tired 2001 saturn SL2. regular plugs 100hp at the wheels. Pulstar plugs 105. I was impressed with them. We made 3 pulls with each plug combo and took the average.

When I was studying automotive in Houston, me and some of the guys were allowed to borrow the Dyno for a day. We got the idea if there was a difference between ordinary spark plugs and the "super high performance spark plugs with 4 electrodes". To our surprise, the average between the two, the high dollar 4 electrode spark plugs produced an extra 4 horsepower over regular ones, but the funny thing was, only one electrode was clean and the other were a bit dusty. Only one electrode was actually firing (electricity takes the path of least resistance, so that made sense). We asked our instructor about the results, his only explanation was that the four electrode plug may have occupied additional space in the combustion chamber, reducing CCs and raising the compression ratio. I bring this up because maybe Pulstar is having the same effect?

I worked as a mechanic for 16+ years and I'm out of it now because my body can't handle the stress anymore. But, there is truth to spark plugs making more power. We dynoed a 2006 Mustang GT and it had an additional 2hp with E3 spark plugs. When we paired them with Accel Ignition Coils, there was a peak gain of 10 horsepower. People can laugh at us technicians, but the dyno don't lie LOL Point being, yes, you can gain power, but I've never seen a gain of 11hp just from a spark plug alone.

@@vivillager multiple electrodes is more about wear. as that one firing electrode wears out a bit the next longest one will take its place and so on. the pulstar plugs are shaped like NGK iridiums. check out projectfarms spark plug tests, pulstar and e3 both outperformed NGK and NGK iridiums(which is what i currently run in every vehicle).

On their site for my engine they note "1 Range Hotter" and a lot of the testimonials are on stock ignition systems. If you already have performance aftermarket MSD or hot coils that might lessen the results. If stock you might see a better gain.
@issacbourne5111
@issacbourne5111 5 лет назад
The problem is: you did not factor in the shorter pre-ignition stage. The reason the plugs did not perform as well is because the timing needs to be retarded by 2 degrees or more. This is because the spark is so much more powerful, the start of the fuel burn flame is much bigger making the actual explosion of the fuel faster. To take advantage of this you should have redon the timing set up to work with these plugs. but instead you set up the timing to work with normal plugs. A computer that is able to adjust timing according to how these plugs work can take full advantage. Computers that cannot will not as to the reason there is such a variance in results. Do the test again and this time adjust the timing for how these plugs work and you'l see. Also they are now on the 4 or 5th generation plugs as they tweak them for better performance and reliability. How many changes has autolite gone through? Not many.

Yeah....the smoothness/power/torque difference I've enjoyed for over 25 years with this technology, first with DirectHits, and now these plugs, is something obviously too few have taken advantage of. If nothing else, the low rpm smoothness and characteristics is consistently appreciated....no other way to achieve that firing consistency result. Its a no-brainer everyone.

Im only utilizing one pulsestar in a 2 stroke bicycle engine, but im at twice the gap the motors supposed to have. I gained noticable power, and was able to get another 800-1000 rpm before it started 4 stroking. Ive noticed in other videos, that the gains from running pulsestars comes more when you increase spark gap than running the original gap.

Casey Cappoen Think what it is they are testing. Only parts changed were plugs. If the super dooper plugs were going to result in more power, theoretically the timing would need backing of a degree or two. This is because the only effect the plugs could have is to give a more complete burn more of the time. This would but bmep up, always resulting in a need for less ignition advance.

I had six of the iridium Pulstars in a 2002 Chevy Trailblazer LTZ for quite a while. I don't know how many miles, but it was for several years. I'd venture to guess that they well exceeded the 50,000 mile claim. I finally had one fail on me on a drive from Kansas to Georgia, in Tennessee. I was driving her really hard and it was during the summer. I started to get a misfire. When I examined the plug on cylinder one, where the misfire was, the entire enter electrode was worn or broken off. It just wasn't there. That was, apparently, causing the misfire. To make a long story short, I replaced all six of the spark plugs with the comparable OEM iridiums. I can definitely tell a difference. The Pulstars had more noticeable power. It certainly isn't the difference felt like a supercharger would be, or a cold air intake with exhaust. It did make a noticeable difference in the Trailblazer and her 4.2 Vortec, however. I miss them. As for the other five, there was indication of their being worn. There's no question about that. It was like the iridium tip point had kind of melted a bit and slid to one side of the electrode. They're still intact, though, and they had been in the Trailblazer for well over the 50,000 mile claim. I'm considering getting another replacement and running them with the other five for a while, and also getting some for a 5.3.

By the diagram they just have a spark gap, that will drive the coil to peak power which will improve performance a bit, same thing with those "power improver" things you put on the coil wire. For the price investing in an MSD unit is probably better in the long run.

In my experience, it takes a little driving for the ECM to adjust to the Pulstars. Using a chassis dyno for torque and horsepower plus very precise fuel measurements will tell a more accurate story, with a few days of driving on the Pulstars before the test. The manufacturer has done MANY of these.

As long as people continue to spend hard earned money believing good marketing lies...you'll see BS claims like this. Anyone who's been around awhile will remember Splitfire plugs making the same promises, with the cost being around 4 times as much as any other spark plug of its time. The ONLY way a spark plug can make any more HP is by burning more fuel.

@@SubLimation7 projectfarms tests also show pulstar as outperforming Iridiums which i've sworn by. pulstar and e3, at least the two models PF tested, both were head to head fuel efficiency wise. they ran a generator for a min or so longer than the iridiums(iridium was about 45.5 minutes, pulstar and E3 were nearly 47 minutes). for 8 bucks for an e3 plug i figured it was worth the test for my own vehicle. pulstars are expensive and rare here in canada so maybe next time i need a spark plug in a few dozen kms.

As the video was originally cut in 2011 and your comment is 6 years old, prices have come down since then. Pulstar plugs for my Honda MSRP at $15.95, available from some sources at $14.95. Sure a bit more than the NGK Iridiums that I run, but I'm open to trying them at the 166,000+ miles on my 2.4L Accord. I've tracked my mpg since March 2012 using a Mileage App, so it would be interesting to see if they improve my fuel economy. I switched to larger tires and drive 10 mph faster on the freeways (now live in Texas) so my mpg (28.1 overall average) has dropped notably from the 30mpg that I used to average with a peak at 34 mpg.

@@oo0Spyder0oo If what you say is true, then installing new spark plugs will not make any change in HC or CO emissions. We know that that does actually make a change. Heat ranges also wouldn't matter for spark plug selection. A hotter or colder plug can be chosen for best combustion results. I don't believe in this Pulse Plug concept either, but I also know that combustion and flame front dynamics are not black and white issues like you portray. Same goes for a diesel engine. You mean the stock 3.48" stroke. Ford uses a 3.5" stroke, stock in the 352FE, 352W, 351C and 352M engines. Heavy used the 3.48" stroke in their 350 and 305. The funny thing is back in the mid 60's Vic Edelbrock took a 350 hp 327 , broke the engine in according to GM specs and put it in the dyno. It only made 313hp. He tried a few thing and when he swapped plugs from AC to Autolite the motor picked up 5hp. This guy is going from Autolites to these new plugs. So if Vic had had them back in the day he could have picked up 8hp must by changing spark plugs! Hmm.. I wonder what would have happened if Firestorm plugs had been available! They induced a plasma into the combustion chamber instead of a spark, providing a cleaner, more thorough burn of the airfuel mixture. They were way more efficient that any sparkplug ever made, but the inventor was met with resistance everywhere he went. Thesparkplug companies didn't want them because they lasted too long. The oil companies put up a fight because they improved mileage significantly, and the Auto Manufacturers didn't want them because they owned spark plug companies and were influenced by the oil companies. Every time someone comes up with a better mousetrap, somebody else shuts them down! Shit!

I played with Pulstar Spark Plugs awhile back. I'm a risk taker and like to try stuff out. Had them in my 2001 Acura Integra. Feels pretty good for the first 9 months after driving maybe like 9,000 miles with them in. My engine car start shaking violent at random and drive smooth again. After a bit more driving, it was undriveable. Took it to the shop, the mechanic gave me lecture saying the plugs are too strong and the engine is not design to handle it. It cause the pistons to be misaligned. After all said and done, the mechanic replaced my spark plugs with brand new good ol NGK spark plugs and aligned my pistons for $140. There are a lot of negative reviews for the Pulstar plugs. It's really not worth it. The reason I decided to try them was because of the benefits and hoping the problems people had were just special cases. I think the chance of failing is like a 50% chance. Good luck if anyone still wants to try it.

How to steam clean the engine constantly while you drive. Get A piece of paper and twist it clockwise until it looks A twisted blunt. Get in as much twists as possible. Then put it into the air intake before the air filter. Make sure that it is parallel with the intake tube and secure from being sucked into the tube. Drive the car like normal for about half an hour and then pull over to A parking lot and get out. Go to the back of the car and put your hand in the exhaust stream. You should feel damp vapor coming out of your exhaust. That is how you know it is working. This should give you A few MPGs better mileage for A few reasons. Coolant is A lubricant, the coolant is already hot and turns to steam easier than if you have A mist system. When water turns into steam it expands A lot. You should use environmentally friendly coolant if you use this trick. To protect your health and others. I have not done this on A rotary car yet! So you are on your own if you do this. Try it or not, as it may damage your engine. The coolant will have to be checked more often as well.

Did it in rain and lost a tiny bit of mileage too. 🤷 You need several trips and an average of all in order to make a claim.

2:43 and 3:28 sells it for me...you can hear the engines running loud as fuck with the first set and sounds like its purring with the Pulstars. Maybe on this Dyno they can really only see the slight hp increase...says nothing about fuel economy, emissions, all the other potential benefits

For a bit more you can put a 100 HP nitrous shot on it , and FEEL the power gain, and stick with the $2 AC plugs, clean and gap them every 15k miles, I hate paying for the E3 plugs, and indexing the plugs can help, ( placing the ground electrode in the same direction in every cylinder) it will effect where the flame starts, and can lessen possible fouling, from incoming fuel, in some cases, but basically the only time you will see a real gain, is if there is something not working properly, and a new plug fixes the problem. Just like hot coils, it's not going to make power unless the original coil wasn't capable of supplying enough current to do the job, higher compression can require more voltage and amperage to start the fire! Still a great video,
@SealofPerfection
@SealofPerfection Год назад
That gain could have just been from the engine breaking in a bit more. I wonder if you put the regular plugs right back in and ran with them again if the power would have stayed where it was with the Pulstars?

You have to reduce the timing by 2 degrees to get your horsepower. Pulstar reduces the need of so much timing because the pre-ignition to explosion of the fuel timing is reduced. Making more of the fuel being burned done so in the explosion of the fuel not in the pre ignition nurn part. You also used a carburetor engine. Computer controlled more adjusts to the differences which a rear wheel dyno will show instead of the set up you used. These are also 100,000 mile plugs.
@issacbourne5111
@issacbourne5111 5 лет назад
@Flapping Flight It's not a longer duration. The plug has a built in capacitor that takes all the energy and zaps it across at one time. The ignites the fuel better reducing the time from ignition of the fuel burn to actual explosion. Taking advantage of that requires you to drop the degrees in timing a little.
@issacbourne5111
@issacbourne5111 5 лет назад
@Flapping Flight The capacitor is inside the plug the outside is the same as a normal plug. This is a one shot cdi where the long duration is shot across the gap is all at once. Making the ignition flame much bigger. And because the loss of power through the wires and distributor (if it has one) is eliminated. So all the power the capacitor produces is used.

A spark is a spark. Once the fuel is ignited it burns no matter what the plug is doing. Machines cannot benefit from a placebo effect, But the owners can. I would say that a single run would be inconclusive.
@cyclonebuzz8172

If I am not mistaken these plugs will not work with a msd or any copies of them. CDIs need a certain type of plugs to work properly like resister plugs. All most all of the spark plugs today are compatible also you have to run certain wires to. I have tried to run the nology capacitor wires with msds too and got misfires. Nology wire work fine on regular ignitions just not CDIs. It might be a fair test if you did it with a hei distributor or points. It's better to have the capacitors in the wires than the plugs anyways. Just read the instructions for the ignition box and you might find out the plugs aren't compatible.

i have used pulstar 2x's $13 per plug on a 2005 Cobalt ls 2.2l 4cyl and a 2008 Cobalt SS/TC tuned 2.0l 4cyl . the 05 gained 2 mpg the highest i was able to get off the regular plugs was 29.99 after the pulstars it was 31.99 and when getting on it for a whole 2 weeks driving around town i lost mpg from the lowest i had ever hit....! the 08 SS/TC i drove around for almost a week using my stock tune without any problems but when i engaged my tune and did about three pulls the plugs misfired in the middle of the third and stopped producing power was able to drive regularly all the way home but every time i tried to get on it at all it misfired . the plugs do seem to work well with naturally aspirated cars but not beyond that

This video should be updated, here is the truth guys, pulstar do really work on fuel injected cars, i have 3 cars and i used pulstar on all and 2 motorbikes and also used pulstar, these plugs dont function well with a dripping carburetors, they do great with fuel injected engines, i tried them and am happy with them and i will never use other junk.

So basically, the improvement in Hp/Tq occurs when the speed of wavefront becomes a limiting factor (4k RPM+). So, unless you're racing, there's no benefit to using Pulstar in regular street/beater cars.

Thank you for confirming the doubts. When I bought them. I noticed drop in early torque too. As well as they died on me suddenly within 10,000km. Engine started misfiring. I went with the classic choice NGK. Safe call. Engine is back to stock performance now.

Tried them out on my car with other mild modifications. They're extremely mediocre and underwhelming. Definitely not worth the extra money. Most tests examine a slight loss in MPG's and about the same horsepower with the pulstar plugs.

I see there is a good small increase in an engine like the one shown as in the video, but at the same time how would it do in a smaller engine is the question. I have seen my friends use this in their vehicles and they have small engines and they get about 7-10 more HP from it

sunking2001 nice my favourite for engine is the Ford 300 4.9 I wish I owned a F-150 with one now I do plan to try to own one preferably carbureted so I can add a high flow 4 barrel edlebrock carb 240 headers for higher compression and a high flow exhaust with cherry bomb glass pack exhaust saw a 1988 F-150 for $3000 but its fuel injection which limits options on what I can actually do to it but these mods will be so I can work the truck harder in construction hauling heavy loads if I can get a truck I'm also replacing the rear leafs and adding a helper spring kit for an additional 3500 pounds of cargo I need the power for heavy haul

Why not just buy an ignition box then? Like the MSD or some other cheaper one. The MSD sparks multiple times. A guy could probably find an ignition box like the MSD street fire ignition box for about $175. I'd like to see Pulstar v.s. ignition box. I would be about the same price too. $30+$175 for the MSD + standard plugs or $200 for the Pulstar Pulse Plugs. Those MSD systems last a long time and are trouble free as long as you hook them up with quality connections and mount it where it's not out in a damp location. I put one in my brother's 79 Dodge van 10 years ago and he's never had any trouble with it. He said that it gets a little better mileage after I installed it. I got one at a garage sale for free. The guy said it didn't work. It works fine it's on my truck right now. I wouldn't want to get shocked by it.

im guessing those plugs burn hotter but dont that mean u need more air and fuel input for them to be anygood i can see on a electronic controled engine to work it may tune it self a bit for the plugs but this one has a carb i would re tun the carb and do this test again just to make shure

A carbureted engine, as this appears to be, may not be the best application for these plugs. Possibly power is available, on the upper end would be nice, if Lamba O² readings allow for a little more fuel. A close comparison of all the data may reveal something worth thinking about. You're in for $200 already... Best of luck.
