"Did somebody take your keys?" 'Can I finish the story?" lmao

It's been 20 years since I first saw this and I still yell "I DRIVE A DODGE STRATUS" anytime I get into a silly shouting match with people. Or if I want to assert my dominance over a group of people having an argument of their own.

The loud clanging of the silverware is such a perfect touch. Bravo to whomever came up with this. It's one of those things dysfunctional families do to try to alleviate tension.

Man, they must have had microphones in the plates. That silverware banging away on the plates really made this skit.

It disturbs me how realistic this is.

The Dodge Stratus reference is too good. That car is the exact car a division manager who’s in charge of 29 people would drive.

Newfound respect for Sarah Michelle Gellar not breaking character as Will Ferrell does yet another iconic comedic turn.

Bitterness, contempt, and regret....Just like mom used to make.

The way the husband casually splits his daughter’s meal between him and his wife implies that this is often how the family dinners end. Perfect addition to the sketch

Whenever me and my husband are having an argument, one of us will yell out "I DRIVE A DODGE STRATUS!"

3:33 I love the laugh the audience gives at the way that ONE GUY in it laughs! Laughter gained by other people's own enjoyment = the function of humanity's need for comedy.

And yet, the funniest part of this whole thing is the random audience member laughing at 3:33.

I love when the husband splits the daughter's leftovers, he makes sure his wife gets all the vegetables and he all the meat. It's only a small detail but very observant.

The wife isnt cutting her steak, shes splitting ATOMS, thats why their emotions are so unstable.

If I'd talked to my parents like that I would have been knocked clear across the room.

The moment it’s quiet and someone in the background just bursts out laughing and the whole crowd erupts is what I live for.

I grew up in a house just like this so this is sad and funny at the same time.

The biggest laugh in the audience wasn't even from the sketch, it was from another guys's laugh in the audience 😂😂 I find that so funny

Sarah Mitchell is such an underrated comedienne. She held her own with these two comedy giants.

This is an underrated gem. One of Ferrell's best and Gasteyer and Gellar are also perfect in their delivery.

I love the guy in the audience who busts out laughing 😂 and makes everyone else laugh 😂

I was about 15 when this aired. "I DRIVE A DODGE STRATUS!!!" had me doubling over with laughter in a way I didn't think was possible. I think my love for Will Ferrell was born that night. It was the first time I particularly took notice of how funny he was.

I wish you weren't a liar.

To this day I still say, “I DRIVE A DODGE STRATUS” when I’m having a disagreement with my wife. Never fails to make us laugh.

I liked it how a guy from the audience made them all laugh at 3:34 ! :D

I want to know about that one guy in the SNL audience in 1998 who laughed extra loudly. How is he? Is he okay? Is he happy and fulfilled in his life?

3:34 - THAT LAUGH though

This sketch is actually pretty accurate in how conversation and relationships work, or don't work in dysfunctional families. People are tense, take everything too personally, don't express their emotions well, etc. It exists. I am from a fairly dysfunctional blended family, where we never had dinners together, only lunches on Sunday. And the lunches usually had no one talking, or very little awkward conversation at best. Everyone just quickly finished their meal and left. We just didn't click for some reason.

To this day "I drive a Dodge Stratus" is my go to comeback.

Whenever my brother and I are in a heated argument, at the end one of us will always yell: "I DRIVE A DODGE STRATUS!" or "I CAN DO 100 PUSHUPS IN 20 MINUTES!"

I would laugh if this didn't hit so close to home

Best bit of ironic comedy here is at the end. Will Ferrell says “this chicken is delicious” when it’s clearly pot roast

Dysfunctional? Seems like a normal everyday dinner at my house....

This sketch achieves a certain level of brilliant, Zen minimalist humor through grueling detail that I have NEVER seen in any other SNL skit. Honestly, this piece is something to be studied.

0:26 this proves how genius and incredible this sketch is. They hadn’t even said a word yet, no funny costumes or props or anything, only making subtle movements, and yet the audience already has a steady laughter going.

I was a Freshman in high school when this aired and this joke flew over my head. I am now older with a family and this has become so relatable its scary.

Sarah Michelle Gellar is underrated in this scene.

The mom just is constantly cutting her food

All three of them are very good actors. Sarah Michelle Geller too. I have no idea how they could keep themselves composed through this whole skit without losing it.

"Hey, why don't you want to get married and have kids?" Me:

I was honestly waiting for a “Don’t talk to your mother that way” and then a “Don’t raise your voice directly after”

I looked for this because this literally just happened in my family. I remember watching this as a teen, now I’m reliving it with my teen. 😭

Of all SNL skits i watched, hands down this one is easily the best. when Will said " i drive a Dodge Stratus" i exploded with laughter!!! so random and so awesome.

This was a truly brilliant sketch. So awkward and tense. But so well executed and dryly fun. I was laughing as loud as the people in the audience.

It's like the scene from American Beauty.

For me this just exemplifies excellent comedic timing - I laugh as uproariously during the silences as during the outrageous outburst - it's a perfect skit! thx SNL! :-)

This feels exactly like the dinner scene in the movie “American Beauty”.

I love it how they go back to cutting their food in a calm but... accentuated manner. Kills me every time xD.

This gets my vote for best sketch in SNL history: perfect length, nobody breaks character, hysterical throughout.

I remember seeing this when it first aired. The funniest thing to me (other than the "I DRIVE A DODGE STRATUS" part) was the audience member losing it at 3:34.

We laugh about it but I bet that millions of American families experience that every day and that is so sad.

This sketch unnerves me. Its so well done. No sound other than the utensils scraping ceramics just a little too frequently. The bursts of cacophonic rage. The cyclic nature. The lack of a setup or punchline. Lack of resolution. Lack of eye contact. And we have all experienced tension like this and it breaks my heart and fills me with tension and regrets. This is a hollow shell of a scene and it is just like how memories like this sit inside us. Simmering in a reflection equally as dark as ourselves. Sarah Michelle Gellar was perfect for the daughter of the two SNL alums. Dysfunctional family dinner indeed.

This skit was expertly executed.
