I often have my V6 stop the motorised brush from turning when there is a rug that blocks the entire head. Then I simply release the trigger, lift the vacuum ja push the trigger again. I can imagine that getting VERY annoying if a vacuum with a button does it often. So does it ever stop the motor head when something is blocking the head?
Thank you for incorporating the absolute because I was going crazy trying to understand the difference and called Dyson directly. I am sure others who are looking to purchase this item have stumbled across the absolute model while searching for the V12. I just purchased this and can not wait to get cleaning❤
I own V12 absolute so here the some points that I noted: 1) the timings for each vacuum part differ so it's not always 60 minutes. also, the eco mode has the longest time (60 minutes) and the boost mode has the lowest time about 5 minutes maximum. 2) I have no complaint about the level of dirt and dust it collects. does an excellent job 3) doesn't suck the big objects like tissues. big objects have to be removed by hand 4) Clean the corners and carpets well. 5) has a small bin compared to other models coz of less weight. 6) As it is slim and less weight I use it almost every day because it's easy to handle and doesn't strain my hand. overall I love this vacuum and I would recommend it.
Thank you for the excellent review. It was very detailed and I finally found someone who could show me if this can lay low for under bed vacuuming. My other concern was the long hair entanglement which you’ve also addressed. Thanks!
Nice. We got this for our small 650 Square ft condo and we love it so far. Since our place is pretty small with a lot small corners, it's perfect. Stepping up from an upright corded shark which was pretty good but a hassle to use. This actually makes me look forward to vacuuming as it's fun in a weird way.
Very informative. Particularly concerned the performance of dealing with long hair, not every reviewer provides enough review on that but you do, thanks!
I have purchased this Dyson model and have had it for a few weeks now. I am amazed to how much dirt / dust this hoover picks up. I have two small dogs and i hoover at least once every two days sometimes every day but every time ive finished hoovering & look in the transparent dust bin i just shake my head each time as i cannot belive how much crap there is in there. Im sure most of it must be the fibres of the carpet but i do see the dog hairs. I would definitely recommend this hoover to anyone & i would definitely buy Dyson from now on even though there not cheap but i am very happy with the result on my hoovering as proof in its hoover bin 😀
I'm in exactly the same situation, but with wood floors ...that ain't the carpet fur you're sucking up. I have 1000 sq ft and 1 short haired dog (Jack Russell). I vacuum every day now because every single day the bin is full of dust/hair/crap that I couldn't ever see before. One vacuum with the V12 every day is getting the same amount of dust as 7 days of Neato D7 robot vacuuming! It's crazy!
@@Endless.embrace Hi, my property is a 3 bed semi. Yes i can do the whole lot on one charge including the stairs. My downstairs has laminate flooring with two big rugs, the rest of the house has carpet apart from the bathroom. I have the hoover on medium suction. Once in a while i have it on full but i don't want it to take all the pile out of the carpets 🤣 so medium is plenty. If you are unsure of getting one, order one from Dyson & if your not happy with it for whatever reason send it back. I use mine to clean out my works van as well
Thanks for your review. I’m debating between the v12 and the v10 but I cannot find a comparison of the two. Are they just that different/similar or is there a big difference in age that they aren’t worth comparing?
We're working on a deep dive comparison within the next couple of weeks here. In the mean time...here are the differences / similarities: V12 = smaller, smaller dust bin, lighter weight V12 = slightly more suction (150 AW vs. 140 AW) V12 = more smart features, smart sensor, fancier display V10 = larger dust bin V12 = slightly longer run time, 51 mins vs. 49 mins on Eco mode
Thanks for the lovely review...this has recently gone down in price but I am concerned as an epileptic would the yellow and purple head spinning give me seizures?
If you frequently switch I'd just leave the multisurface on all the time. Use the soft roller if you need to clean lots of hard surface floors at the same time.
in your opinion would a V12 be powerful enough for a 2200 sq ft home includes both floors .... mostly hardwood with , numerous area rugs.....one room with carpet.....we have one pet...also is it powerful enough to do a good job cleaning your car ? i guess my only concern would be the smaller dust bin.....if it lasts for one floor that would be perfect...i must admit i like the idea of a power button and the lighter weight just as long as it does a very good job cleaning....its 899 here in Canada.....V15 detect 999 / outsize plus 1249 / Gen5 detect 1199........i will want to buy a spare battery and Detail Kit.....i look forward to your opinion i think i am very close at deciding finally...lol...thx again for your review...cheers from Canada
Yeah, you will need to empty it more often than others. But honestly, you should be doing that with every cordless vacuum like this. Cordless vacuums work much better when the bin is empty.
Hi Viewers, I own a Dyson v12 and this is one of product which I feel I have paid the money and I'm getting the excellent result for it. My wife and kid is allergic to dust and it was a huge mess. What ever we have done cleaning was not getting proper. Atlast I bought a Dyson v12 . Wooh. This is insane. You have to try this with boost mode and clean the fabric or cloth sofa, you can see the unbelievable result from that.. Don't look for money.. this will be a worth
@@azku I prefer V12 absolute..Fluffy has got one attachment for floor cleaning with light guide. But it's prefered for wood floors mainly. Absolute has got one more attachment which is for hard floors.. That's better for hard floors.
@@deepakjohnabraham2172 I ended up getting the Absolute. I’m glad I did because I ended up using the combo head instead of the fluffy head most of the time.
Thank you for the video!!! One thing I still don't understand, is the eco mode enough to clear hard floors? And for sofas better the medium mode? And when actually do you need the boost if I don't have carpet but only hard floors? Last but not least, what speed and head do you use to dust furniture's and to clean the balcony?
I think Eco mode is more than sufficient for hard floors. When you're cleaning sofas or other fabric surfaces I'd step up to medium. I really only use Boost if I know it's super dirty or I haven't cleaned a specific spot in a long time. For outside furniture, it really depends on the exact furniture, it's coverings, upholstery, etc.
@@ModernCastle hey Derek thank you HEAPS for your kind reply and thank you for the tips! Regarding outside I actually mean cleaning the balcony floor. Sorry for the mess in my question...
@@Le_Lys_Eclectique I would probably just sweep / mop your balcony floor (provided it's a hard surface). Running a vacuum over outside surfaces is more likely to lead to vacuum damage.
@@ModernCastle ohhhh ok! Awesome thank you heaps!!! 🙏 Maybe just vacuum up some dirt with the long nozzle? I'm inn an apartment block so no gardening stuff, only dust, pollen and, occasionally some dead leaves...
@@Le_Lys_Eclectique Yeah, using a non-motor attachment to get some of the dirty should be fine. Just make sure you aren't getting any gravel, pebbles, pieces of concrete, etc. Even a small piece of material like that could destroy the machine.
@@ModernCastle definitely a perfect fit i live in a one bedroom apartment with 2 cats and the amount of dust and fur i pickup, people hating on dyson and i almost decided to stick with stanley corded vac if not for it being on sale and so far the amount of convinience compared to my corded vac im even too lazy to use it. I just manually sweep sometime, to me its totally worth the price now the question is the longetivity of this thing.
@@azitaulava Indeed - seems that most of the people that hating on Dyson just have never used a Dyson. There is a notably difference between Dyson and most other vacuums on the market.
QUESTION ALL ? is the power button a game changer in the V12 and Gen5 or is the trigger fine and no issue in the V15.....thats why i am trying to rack my brain and pick between the three,,,.....2200 sq ft house total...mostly hardwood with various area rugs and one room has carpet....want something strong enough to clean car also.....thx for your review.....cheers from Canada
I wouldn't say it's a game charger, but it is nice. Having to continuously hold the trigger is a bit annoying, in my view. Some find it more annoying, some less. Really just depends on your preference.
dyson v12 slim (none detect) vs dyson v12 slim detect? is the only difference the piezo detection that the detect version has or am i missing something?
K. The hair test in the kitchen I noticed that you didn’t use the fluffy head. Was that due to only the head, or can you use that motor head on all surfaces?
Motorhead works on all surfaces. Motorhead usually is better for hair compared to soft roller, but there's no reason you couldn't use the fluffy head if you prefer.
its pretty nice. i think its worth it personally. especially if you have a lot of carpet. otherwise i would recommend just get something simpler but its nice great for hardfloor, just a little overkill
I just purchased the V12 Absolute and am waiting for it to come in the mail. I live in a small condo with a ton of hair to pick up and will probably be moving somewhere larger in the near future. Should I cancel my order and spring for the V15 or V15 Absolute?
V12 is basically a V15 with slightly less suction and a slightly smaller form factor. I'd just stick with the V12. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
How did you get on with the v12? I recently bought my very first cordless..... The Dyson v12. All the other versions would have been too heavy for me. Even this one hurts me. I'm disabled with chronic illnesses/pain, but it's cleaning powder has blown me away! I can only use it for a wee while anyway, so having only one battery is ok. I DO have some problems with it though: - the big head won't vacuum my doormats, although the pet head will, but it's hard work (although manageable) - the bin is sooo small that it often doesn't fill evenly, due to a fin that sticks out from the hinge area. Sometimes 50% will be full, and the other side of the cylinder will be empty! - I am trying to find a way for it NOT to set off my dust allergies. Keep getting asthma, which is usually controlled well, when I'm emptying it and cleaning it. My old Meile had HEPA bags, so nothing dusty to empty. - There's an on/off button, but the way the handle is designed, with the cylinder's weight over the handle, presses down my my thumb joint, which gets very sore very quickly. - I used it to vacuum up some dead leaves from a houseplant, and the exhaust air, at the end of it was soooo powerful, it was blowing everything off the desk, including scattering the very dead leaves I was trying to get! - And, despite only using it 5 times, the strip of red fabric has nearly all rubbed of the pet hair head! Couldn't believe it tonight, when I saw it! Unbelievably, there look to be wee scratches on the base of this head too! I've used it 2 x 20-25 mins, and 3 x 10 mins! I AM able to return it, until 28th January 2023 if I'm not happy with it. I've done a lot of research on both the Dyson v12 and the Samsung Bespoke with the self-cleaning thingy, but I decided on the Dyson mainly because I had read that the Samsung is not good at picking up fibres. I don't exactly know what classifies "fibres" but my house is extremely dusty due to my failing health, and barely being able to vacuum these past 3 years. It feels sooo good to be able to do little 10 minute sessions with a cordless, but I'm just not sure about keeping it.
Thanks for your review on the Dyson V12! It helped me make my mind about which Dyson model I should get. In Germany, it's sold here by offering different brushes and tools. The more tools you get in a package, the more expensive. So, is the extra soft brush tool necessary for vacuuming delicate objects or would the combi tool work just as well (since it also has soft bristles)? And would the hair screw tool be a good substitute to vacuum couches and upholstery or should I also try to get the mattress brush tool? Would love to know what you think! Thanks so much!!
The combi tool (called the Motorhead here in the US) is perfectly fine for hard surface floors and carpets / rugs alike. Soft roller brush is a nice extra, but not required. Same with the hair screw vs. mattress tool. Both work well on upholstery, so I wouldn't spend any extra money to get one vs. the other.
@@derellscott6695 If budget is no option, Gen 5 is the easy choice. Otherwise, I think the V12 is the right pick if you value the lighter weight and more compact design. If you don't have a huge floor plan to clean then higher something that's easier to manage in hand is super nice.
For those interested : I asked Dyson if I can use my 220V V12 on 110V if I swap out the battery and/or charger. Answer : not possible due to motor settings.
@@ModernCastle Actually, the non-powered accessories, like Extension Hose, Up Top Adaptor, etc. can be. I was just at the New York City company Dyson store and they have the V12 Slim and V15 next to each other with the accessories available to try out. This is neat, but Dyson still do not offer any tiny brush attachments for notebook computer vents or keyboards.
@@paulchiu Hrm...interesting, that's good to know. I wonder if I have an earlier V15 that is incompatible. I checked a couple of attachments a while ago and they did not work.
@@ModernCastle Ok, I wished I could post photos here. But. I just received 3 boxes of passive attachments for my V12 Slim Detect Absolute. They are the (1) Mattress Tool Retail (2) Car Cleaning Kit Retail, and (3) Up Top Adaptor Retail. All in their own retail colored sealed boxes. The Car Cleaning Kit is especially nice looking. Well, all 3 had labels on the boxes that list V15, V12 Slim, V10, V8 and V7. So, I am expecting the Light Pipe Crevice Tool Retail shortly for my V12 Slim. This powered part is unique to the V12 Slim, with a different part number and cost less than the model for the V15. Please share with your fans. Paul - NYC
@@paulchiu Oh that is indeed very interesting. For years and years Dyson has been adamant that NONE of their V-series vacuum attachments were cross compatible. Despite the fact that many of them obviously are. For them to be now labeling them as cross compatible in the same box is a huge turn about. Thanks for the heads up.
Hey I just got this vacuum but one thing is really anoying to me - the auto mode. The fast that that suction power changes so frequently is just frustrating somethings and I would rather use it on medium mode. How do you change the mode to medium when the roller is attached? Cant really find this info anywhere so really hope you know :(
Warning! No replacement battery for V12 seems to be available. Once the battery goes out you will have to replace the vacuum. This battery has been out of stock for at least a year. Did Dyson do this intentionally? We just purchased the vacuum but am disgusted because we cannot purchase a spare battery as Dyson recommends.
Don't worry about buying Dyson's 1st party battery. There are a ton of perfectly fine 3rd party batteries for the V12 and every other models within Dyson's V-series line. Adjustable height no. But it does have the seal gate that is raised / lowered, essentially making it better / worse for carpets or hard surface floors depending on position.

there are dozens of videos reviewing dysons. But nobody talks about how they work two or three years later. If they lose power, etc. Someone should really start doing it.
It's pretty much a toss up between V11 and V12. I do really like the size of the V11, super lightweight and more compact compact to the V11, while still having nearly as much power / overall performance.
More or less, yes. Dyson batteries hold their charge very well. I've left Dyson's for months on end and still found them mostly where I left that as far as charge.
We do giveaways, but not usually for the stuff we review. Most of our products we review we keep on hand for content updates, comparisons, future videos, etc.
More or less, yeah. Little smaller dust bin, lighter weight, and a little less suction power. Though it doesn't feel like that smaller suction is having a negative impact on performance.
V12 is 2,500 mAh battery V15 is 3,600 mAh battery However, battery capacity isn't as important, in my view. If vacuum X has enough suction to create 100% cleaning performance + runs for the same amount of time as vacuum Y then it doesn't matter what the battery capacity is.
@@ModernCastle imo modern robovacs render floor heads useless, the only purpose of manual vacuum nowadays is to clean spots unreachable to robovac. I.e. floor corners, inside of a furniture, upholstery and car. And dyson Vs can only deal with upholstery. For other purposes just pure power is needed, and dyson's boost mode is barely enough. V12 lasts only about 5 minutes in boost mode, so battery capacity matter. Though I'm not sure that 8 minutes vs 5 will make big difference.
@@swgar Yeah, I do tend to agree. I use handful vacuums to clean up messes around the kitchen and couch, but very rarely ever use a full sized vacuum to clean. Robot vacuum is just so convenient and 95% as good as an upright or cordless.
Most likely the motor in the head is burned out and you'll need to replace the entire cleaning head assembly. Submit a warranty claim, Dyson is usually pretty quick about those.
There is something in your dB measurement that ain’t right. Not just by a margain, but by a lot. Every other review i’ve seen measure this thing at above 70 dB. The most quiet vaccums in the entire world is rated at about 54 dB - and they have been designed to be very quiet. It’s not possible to make a stick vaccum with this sort of dB rating. You should google some other reviews and look at their dB measurements and compare it to yours.
Not sure what to tell you. We use a sound meter and measure the dB. It's just as simple as that. We've tested dB ratings on dozens and dozens of products and the V12 is exactly what I expect it to be.
@@ModernCastle I just bought the vaccum a week ago and when i measure the dB is 77 when measured right at the machine. I think your dB measurement equipment might be broken.
@@Goldgirl1978 I purchased the machine a week ago and has just measured the dB and it says 77 when measured on top of the machine. 54 decibel is waaaay of reality. It’s easy on the ears yes - but it’s still 77 dB’s right at the machine.
You're not wrong...but it's hard to objectively test products that way. Our slower and more consistent approach creates more consistent and objective data. In any case, it seems like "oh Dyson does so good but only because he goes so slow"...but then you would be shocked at how many vacuums do absolutely terrible even at this slow speed. Very few vacuums I've tested to date are anywhere near this level, despite using the same testing speed.
meh. Chinese cordless already have led lights on the head, already have always on trigger lock, already have swappable battery. Dyson these days = expensive knock-off of Chinese innovation. 3 years behind Great China products.
As someone who has tested A LOT of Chinese vacuums I cannot disagree with this more. With the exception of perhaps 2-3 brands, basically every vacuum coming out of China is terrible. Not even close to comparable to what Dyson creates.
@@MrYanQo For all global brands...Dyson, Miele, Samsung, LG, and Shark (but only their high end stuff) are my favorites For Chinese brands...the only one I have significant confidence is in Roborock (and only for their robots).
