Ready to shake up your dystonia retraining routine? Check out our clinic director and OT, @naoya.nick.ogura getting creative on a treadmill! 🕺
Now, don’t get me wrong, not everyone needs a treadmill dancing routine like this (although I think we would all love to be this skilled!)
But this treadmill routine demonstrates a key component of training in dystonia: variability
And variability in the sensory experience of a task is crucial for promoting neuroplasticity.
By introducing diverse movements and stimuli, we help rewire the brain and improve motor control. 🧠
So, let’s take some cues from Naoya for ways we can do this in dystonia:
Changing the speed of the step
Changing the direction of the step
Changing the mechanics of the step-crouching or walking on toes
Stepping to the beat of a song
Changing the arm movement
And maybe most importantly-freedom of movement and having fun
Discover how tweaking speed, incline, or incorporating rhythmic beats can benefit your patients. Share your thoughts in the comments and let us know how you add variability into your therapy sessions.
Also-how 🔥🔥🔥is this treadmill routine by Naoya? So good!
