If I were content with a clicker, I would agree. The problem is that a clicker can’t give feedback when the dog is 100 yards away and off leash. That is where the e collar is easily the most important training tool I use besides a whistle and leash.
@@DogFocusTraining I don't use ecollar, clicker or whistle. My dogs don't stray more than 30 yards from me by choice and one even recalls with a kiss at that distance.
That is great. For me, my dogs are performing retrieves at 100 to 125 yards - often in very windy conditions. Even a whistle is difficult for them to hear on those days. So, that is why I choose to use a e collar for positive reinforcement. But, I understand why, in your case, it would not make sense or seem necessary.
@@DogFocusTraining Working dogs have been trained for many thousands of years without ecollars. They are also safer with nothing around their necks to get caught on. Train a solid foundation at close quarters for a willing, happy worker and increase the distance incrementally. Build in visual signals for distance and rough weather. Positive reward for a retrieve happens when the dog returns to you.
There is no time that using an e-collar is appropriate…use a clicker yes, or a long line for recall training. Your dog needs to see the value is with you, not the environment & that is through positive reinforcement. Thank goodness these things are soon to be banned in the UK.
