Standard Mylites 2 + Standard Full Back OR Silver BCW Archives + Standard Full Back is IMO the way to go. You know what they say... once you go Full Back you never go back.
It's really Collector preference and Individual tastes... I'm with ya Chris that Half Back is simply to Flimsy for me and I prefer to us Standard BCW Backs .. I too like a Full Snug Comic in Mylites...
Interesting comparison Chris. Those do seem mighty flimsy. I try to put them in snuggly so they can’t move beyond the edges of the board. I’ll be curious to see a follow up at some point.
I think you suffer from OCD. I think that's what every collector suffer from lol. This is exactly the video I was looking for, because I was looking for backboards that would fit snug with my mylar bags(since I'm converting)I too dont want that extra plastic small cut board. I think you are in the right. Thanx I was bout to buy the e.gerber halfbacks
I know this vid's two years old but.... e. Gerber boards are about ACID FREE, BOTH SIDES...that's why they feel that way. Look and feel your other boards....two different textures, cuz only 1 side is treated, only 1 side is acid free. It makes a difference. You want rigidity? Get the Full Backs. Best of both worlds. I use the same Mylites2 with Full Backs inside...I put a comic on EACH SIDE...Y'know...Defenders #16 on front side and Defenders #17 on back side, for example. Two books, 1 mylite bag, 1 Full Back, away from sunlight, least humidity as possible...the comic will not age. Back to back books even add to rigity PLUS in a short/longbox they stack more evenly...properly.
Yeah I did a follow up to this about investing in Full Backs. I still believe half backs are not worth your money. If you're going to spend the money, go Full Back all the way.
Back in the 70's and the beginning of the 80's all we had were comic bags we had no comic back boards until 1984... I used to keep my comic boxes upright, one comic facing up one comic facing down to keep them even and in great condition.
I was not able to find the 7 1/8" x 10 1/2" boards anywhere. I even checked with A-1 Comics like you suggested. The E Gerber site says that they will cut boards for a custom fit, but there is no price. Still looking for a solution for storing my Silver-Age books in Mylar.
Hey Scott! Who did you talk to at A1? Im uploading a video now that might provide more insight. A1 should definitely have 7 1/8 inch boards, labeled 'silver.'
@@JernosComicsPopCulture I didn't speak with anyone. I just went to the website. It may not even have been the same store. I will be on the lookout for that video!
@@darthsneaky ah gotcha! Or you local to Sacramento? Their website isn't very modern lol. I would Google 'a1 comics Sacramento' and give them a call. If you're not local, see if they'd be willing to do a shipment order of their silver sized boards.
A LOT of things are "overhyped and not worth the money" -- most ALL comics that are currently ridiculously priced. The bottom is going to fall out next year and a lot of people are going to be holding the bag.
I've used mylites2 and fullbacks for years the only way they move around is if you're moshing with them, I have no idea how you could be wiggling them while they are in the boxes unless you're playing soccer with the boxes lol
Lolll soccer? Maybe baseball? Or basketball lol. Yeah it just bothers me most importantly because of eye appeal. But, even with the slightest moving around, if a comic has space to move even a millimeter, the more possibilty that the slightest shift can ding the corners. Also, if the board is smaller than the book, that can warp and hurt the edges that sit beyond the edge of the board.
@@SykotikOne Since he's using half backs is probably the reason why they're moving around too much for his liking. If he uses full backs like you the comics probably won't move at all.
I'm glad I saw this, cancelled my Current Boards for the Regular ones. :) Man, they we were using Polyethylene bags when last I bagged comics. Guess I'll miss the PolyProp completely and jump to Mylar. EDIT: Though it confuses me that a mil and a pt should be the same size, so Half Backs and the BCW board should be same thickness. Though E Gerber no sells 6 7/8" size in either Half nor Full Back
@@JernosComicsPopCulture ... That's a great idea for bulk usage. But I'm at other end of the usage scale. I'm gonna give the BCW 6 7/8" like you suggested, for the same basic reasons. Plus will add a 6 3/4" Half Back as well. It's cheaper than Full Backs and way less than cut-to-order Full Backs. This is especially true for how few comics are involved. I probably can maybe almost possibly fill a whole quarter of a single short box. EDIT: We had Poster Board in the 80s. Seems I was cutting edge as a kid.
great video.I Have a question and i need help-i bought today mylites2 and halfback boards( E.Gerber). I found the boards a bit rough in the surface, not shiny, is that a problem for my comics? is it safe? someone said that they left a dimpled effect on the back cover . i would really appreciate if you helped me. Thank you.
Make sure the comic isn't super snug or tight in the mylar. Also make sure your box isn't jam packed with comics. I've seen a price tag impression on comic covers due to having TOO many comics in a box. Also make sure they are upright and not leaning, pressure makes impressions, nothing else. If it does ever happen, a light press will easily fix it. I just priced a $120K collection of Avengers 1-50 (about 32 out of the first 50) and more gold, silver and bronze that have been in Full-Backs. Not one had that problem and you shouldn't have that problem either. So....Don't have a bag/board that is too small to make the comic fit tightly. Don't have a jam packed box. Pressure is bad....tight in bag, tight in box, lean in box or laying flat on back is a bad thing. Always upright. Get Fullbacks for more expensive and add a half-back if the comic goes up in price. Or add a fullback behind the halfback and take out the halfback for a different comic. Cool?
@@paulieincalie my friend thank you very much for your answer! one more problem that i have is that i cannot get the all the air out of the mylite once i close it with a tape, there's always air within, is that a problem and if it is, how can i avoid it?
Herman Melville I am slow and consistent with placing them inside Mylar. After placing them inside put gently on my chest, press to let air out (super gentle) and fold the flap, then tape. Most air out is good, mainly for storage, but all is not. Paper needs to breath a little. It’s a hobby, take time and enjoy the process. If your rushed, do it the next day. It’s my “happy place,” I enjoy it as such. ✌️
@@paulieincalie thanks again, if there is a lot air, will that cause creases?i cannot afford fullbacks because thay cost a lot and i cannot afford the cost. i put my comics in mylites standard with halfback boards, is that a problem?
Herman Melville The angle of the comic being stored is the most important. If you have dividers to help keep upright, that would be the best. If your adding your books to a long box, you’re in for trouble with flimsy half-backs. I have BCW plastic short boxes for current pulls, then I put them in permanent alphabetical with Collector drawer boxes (that also have dividers. Leaning is the enemy. Having a little extra room with Standard is fine, but I only use them with anniversary or thicker issues. Get some currents when you can and full backs for expensive currents (hot books). Save up and try “ready_set_collect” on eBay. Cheapest on...anywhere. Buy more, save more is great too. Get friends and order a ton. 300 current mylites2 $81.60 to your door. 2x150. Enjoy
My collection is probably 99%over 4,000 comics) Mylar 4mill with acid-free fullbacks, in the proper age bag. And maybe 200 using half-back and still find that due to the 4mil Mylar, it’s still very rigid.
That's a big investment there! I actually don't like the 4 mil bags. I think they are too bulky for my liking, but hey, we do what we have to do to protect our books!
@@JernosComicsPopCulture True, pretty expensive, but they were bought over a period of several years starting in 2011, when I got tired of the poly bags and came back into collecting.
@@LU3MC2003 I always say, whatever makes you happy as a collector, and if investing in the highest quality protective supplies does it, then make it happen! I definitely think full backs any day over half backs, but I'm good with saving money and sticking to 2 mil. It's an aesthetic thing for me. They just feel too thick, and I hate the way that the flap is so hard to fold down. Now, with all of that being said, I still have two bags of 4 mil in my supplies lol.
Just a quick add... I found that half-backs are a little flimsy. I only use them when I have a full box so they don't ever lean. I use fullbacks mostly now. Another, since you're an artist, you know that drawing paper is acid free and it looks just like the half-backs. Hence both sides are acid free and can be used for permanent storage with mylar. (so you don't have to change out 1-sided acid free boards every 3 years due to breaking down). Use a second half back for more protection (don't add a regular board-it will break down). Use fullbacks on most or more expensive comics. BOTH sides are acid free, like the package says (100% acid free for PH level). If comics are stored upright (not like the comics on top of your shelf-that makes me cringe-aka-we're both anal) a looser bag or less board than you like is totally fine. .....The comics like a little room and not a lot of pressure, the space is ok and helps with this. Don't use regular glossy boards in mylar.....the smell and breaksdown will remain in your mylar and are a waste of time and money. Save them for if you sell them. Just adding on my trials and don't mind sharing....its what we should do. Thanks
Not sure if this is a seriously genuine question, or if you are just trolling me. Short answer? No. Nobody has used brown cardboard on comics since the 80s, and if they have, then they probably aren't concerned with preservation.
I use one full back and one half back per book or three half backs. You’re right the egerber half’s are flimsy. As for the gloss those companies are not 100% acid free and more importantly they are not 3% alkaline buffered which helps them to be archival safe. I’ll leave a link to your ig page
Oh really? "The BCW Current Comic Backer Boards are made from 24 point solid bleached sulfate, coated and buffered on one side with 3% calcium carbonate , and are precision cut to size. Use this item along with current comic bags to protect and store your collectible comics." Gerber boards are made up of the exact same composition.
Noooo half back stick with how your doing it. Early age use small mylar and backboards most were cut smaller butt kicker but in my opinion I would stay away from the half-backs keep to the sizes quarter inch smaller then the bags with a snug fit and even distribution of the back Ford framing the comic
Pulls these if you got them.... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-boDZB4wvyeU.html Now I have to do it send them to get graded. How many so you swnd in onw shot? I'm thinking sending 10 for my first.
Btw, your comment is ironically and hypocritically ignorant as shit, since glossed boards are a buffer for acids and oils. Before gloss boards, back in the 80s and 90s, most boards were basic cardboard, no gloss. THOSE are the worst boards. Full backs with no gloss are the best in terms of protection, for being thick and 100% acid free. Half backs are so flimsy that the fact they are 100% acid free becomes secondary to board support. But that's right, you did your research. 🤔
@@stelbertstylton back pedal? Loll. Your attempt to gaslight me won't work. Does coming on RU-vid and trying to belittle people make you feel good about yourself? You feel like a big man? You need a hug or something? I stand by my claim: half backs aren't worth your money. And gloss boards AREN'T the worst boards out there. Good day.
