E. Guigal was established by Etienne Guigal (pronounced "gee gal") in 1946. It is now managed by Marcel (2nd generation) and Philippe (3rd generation) Guigal.
Cote Rotie is a region in Northern Rhone where the primary red wine varietal is Syrah. Cote Rotie is made up of 2 regions, which is divided by the Reynard stream. Upstream is Côte Brune, which is planted with Syrah. Cote Brune wines are generally powerful and intense wine. Downstream is Cote Blonde, where a bit of Viognier is also grown and blended into the red wines. Cote Blonde wines are more subtle compared to Cote Brune wines. They are named "Brune" and "Blonde" because there were 2 daughters of the landowner: one with dark hair and the other with blonde hair. When the daughters got married, the landowner gave each of them one of his two best plots of land.
So the grapes used to produce this wine are taken from both Cote Brune and Cote Blonde. The wine is aged in oak barrels (50% new) for 36 months. The blend of the wine is 94% Syrah and 6% Viognier. Around 220,000 bottles of this wine was produced.
Wine Spectator rating of this wine is 94 pts but somehow, I am missing it. Would love to hear other viewer's opinion of this wine and your tasting notes.

I’ve had this twice before and really liked it. For the price though (about $65 here) I like the Jean Luc Colombo’Les Ruches’ more. I’m not great at ranking wines but I would agree with a 90-92 score on the Guigal and for me the JLC would be a bit higher at about 93-94. I’m really enjoying Rhône wines right now and your Julien Barge reviews have given me another few wines to seek out. Thanks for the tip!

doublewides: maybe I am just expecting too much from Guigal wines. Actually 90 pts is not a terrible wines but I was expecting so much more from this wine since it is has been aged. Not sure if it still young or over the hill but wasn't as good as I thought. Mostly perception on my part. I remember it used to be a $40 wine and I think it is much more expensive now so I was expecting more. Again, it could be me not letting the wine speak to me but imposing my standards on the wine. I am very interested in trying Guigal flagship wine to see if it changes my mind about the winery. Cheers!

@@TrophyWineHunter I agree. 90 pts is not a bad score and while I enjoyed it I also agree that I was hoping for just a bit more. I’ve also recently tried their Cote Rotie d’Ampuis. Same thing there, good but I was hoping for a bit more. I think in this case I probably tried it too early and didn’t give it a chance to age and really show what it had. Cheers and looking forward to the next review.

Hey mate, I was at E.Guigal this summer with millions of questions. They add viognier according to the heat they experienced. Viognier supposedly a fresh balanced grape is supposed to counteract the heavyness of the Syrah. Hence they have been adding less and less viognier as the early bottles contain 20% this is due to global warming and them experiencing more heat! Mindblowing but this is how they decide the blend. And yes this allowed under the rules of the region.

The alcohol was 13,5% instead of 14%, looking at the back of the bottle.

RB: yes you are correct...I misread the top of label that wine was between 11-14%. Will see if I can splice out that comment. Cheers!

I would really like to hear you compare a very guigal vs sine qua non. Maybe guigal cote la turque.

Bee: wow..quite an ask. I am not sure if I will do it in one video but I have both a Guigal "La" and SQN....hmmmm...interesting! Please continue to watch. Cheers!

@@TrophyWineHunter well. I have sine qua non. People described it as Rhône like. I do not have guigal. But would love to hear your comparison. Even if not drank on the same night.

@@navarra4 I actually have never had Guigal "La" but have had other Northern Rhone superstars like Chave. I don't think SNQ stylistically is anything like Northern Rhone wines. SNW is much more bold and expressive. Cheers!

grigorhaig: I don't think it is really going out to purchase especially to try. Decent but not mind blowing. Cheers!
