(c) 2015 vintage synthesizer demo by RetroSound
supported by UVI: bit.ly/retrosou...
E-MU Emulator II Sampling Synthesizer from the year 1984
demo with different sounds from the E-MU sampling library, arpeggiator, sequencer....
The EII was the direct successor of the EMULATOR and maybe the most famous sampler in the world, 8-bit sampling, 27.7 kHz sample rate, SSM2045 24 dB/oct analog 4-pole low pass resonant filters, awesome sound quality
Used a lot by Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, New Order, Genesis, ABC, Front 242, Peter Gabriel (Sledgehammer) and a lot more.
The famous Marcato Strings heard on so many 80's records including Pet Shop Boys' "West End Girls".
RetroSound synthesizer demo videos since 2007.
All is for free. If you like my work, I'm also happy about a small donation or a purchase of my music albums. All is very welcome and helpful. Thank you!

And now it’s 2020 and still a beautiful sounding synth. Well ahead of its time. In 1984 it cost not far of a price of a house in the U.K.. still cheaper than a fairlight. This synth open the doors to cheaper samplers.your lucky to have all them classic synths and keeping them alive. Thanks for sharing this with us.

I acquired an EMU II in 1995, my then girlfriends dad was a church organist and his church pipe organ was undergoing a planned maintenance so I offered him of the use of either my M1 or the EMU II, in the collection of sounds/samples disks that came with the instrument was a sample of the "Let Jesus fuck you" sample from The Exorcist movie which was labelled LJFU which he loaded and then played, I was so embarrassed , but he wet himself laughing thinking of the congregations faces if he triggered that after a hymn

The problem with Ferris Bueller having this in his bedroom was that it cost $7,995 in 1986 when that movie was made and in todays money that's equal to $18,700. What parents would buy their son a synthesizer costing that? Wait a minute though, Bueller's father had a Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder in his garage, a car that even back then would have cost a fortune. Maybe he just had _really_ wealthy parents. This poses another problem though, why was he attending a normal high school and not a private school?
@oim8405
@oim8405 4 года назад
probably because it's better for a child to go to a normal school, since the child learns how to interact socially with every type of human being. you don't really get the same from private schools

5:03 the sound quality on that thing is pretty impressive today, still! New Order must have been shitting themselves when they first got their hands on this thing. But everything is a trade-off, and this case apparently sometimes after hours of meticulously programming those great sounds , they would turn it on the next day and the data would just be.... gone. I guess they finally had to start marking the bars of the song down on paper and drawing hashmarks wherever a note was programmed to save time. That's commitment. LoL!
@paulluna8099
@paulluna8099 5 лет назад
jktosh I experienced that with my DAW twice. I lost an entire song file and a didgeridoo sample while I was morphing it into something else. I worked on it for 4 hours and Ableton (DAW) crashes. The good news I had already uploaded the song file to Sound Cloud even though I lost the master (I can’t go back to remix it). As for the sample I still have it as it was downloaded. Fucking sucks.

@@retrosound72 yeah, thats true to an extent. But I do think that fun instruments help aid the creativity. Back in the 80s, the Emulator was a 'new toy' and they all played/experimented with one, and the result was many brilliant syth bands!

Was it foolhardy of me to compare the Prophet X with this baby? The title/closing cut from the first Simply Red Album, *Picture Book,* includes a synonymous string sound to that one from 1:38. Love to know if their keyboard player from ‘85, Fritz McIntyre had an Emulator II.
@TryptychUK
@TryptychUK 3 года назад
Yes. It's like comparing a Ferrari with a Humvee. Both good, but very different. The Prophet is a synth, the Emulator is a sampler, it has no sounds except what you load into it.

OK, now play a The Cars/Ric Ocasek (only) song! I was hoping you'd show us a lot more about the disk drives, because when I first saw this, it was being played either by Ric's own band alone or The Cars on Saturday Night Live, and the first keyboards I saw with a disk drive had a single 3.5" floppy drive, shortly after I saw my first device with a disk drive that wasn't a full computer: a cash register! Then still before seeing that SNL, I saw a camera with a floppy drive: the Sony Mavica! So then I saw this keyboard on SNL and thought, "Oh my gosh, they even made music keyboards with not just one, but _two_ floppy drives, and they are 5 1/4" instead!" Until then I never knew floppy drives being used with or installed into things other than regular computers went so far back! And then I started seeing even weirder things with a floppy drive in them, like oscilloscopes and medical equipment! And then came the hard drives in standalone devices, such as arcade games and DVRs! Of course nowadays, instead of floppy drives, we see SD card slots and USB jacks, and that makes sense too. So now I'd like to know why a keyboard like this would ever need a second floppy drive as if it had to boot up its OS from the first one and you'd just leave the disk in there while you used the other drive for settings and saved songs, etc. How about sharing?

Remember when they came out. Really $$$ for the time. But that was expected as it had a few innovations ahead of the crowd. Back then synths were not cheap really until the FM Dx-7 showed then more cost effective manufacturing followed to some extent.

When you sample an instrument something like a DX7 do you have to sample a few notes to spread it across the keyboard?
@retrosound72
@retrosound72 6 лет назад
yes for multi samples
@TryptychUK
@TryptychUK 3 года назад
It depends on the sound, some samples spread better than others. A DX7 won't need a lot as they are simple sounds, whereas say, a real piano would need at least three samples per octave to get a reasonable approximation. The more samples, the more accurate.
