You made the right choice. Had a car way back in the 70's that leaked rain just a tiny bit. The musty smell NEVER left the vehicle regardless of what we did to it. Water is natures biggest mess. DRY it up good. Keep the great videos coming !!

MOP up the wettest with a towel, park it in the hot sun with everything opened up. No biggie with clean water. Twice we had the same issue from a cooler drain left open, including a very wet spare tire well.

Yes, ultimately it was far less calamitous than I originally feared at the moment. I really thought that much water would require tearing the car apart, but I was surprised by how much it had dried out by the time I got home, and a few hot days at home with a fan running through it 24/7 finished it off just fine.

Very concerned for you & your family's safety given the current conditions in your local. Watched your RU-vid live test the other night but did not comment. You seemed overwhelmed! It's been a very weird week of heavy smoke, ashfall, and emergency alerts lighting up my phone with more and more evacuation notices. The winds have shifted and the fire nearest to us here is no longer racing as aggressively towards town, though we're still socked in with hazardous air quality, making it impossible to be outside. There's a good chance of rain early next week so hopefully that will help the firefighters turn the corner on containment, though they expect this one to keep burning until the actual wet season hits, which could be well into October.

For sure, and ultimately it was far less serious than it felt at the time. I envisioned water trapped and rusting things out, but fortunately it all dried out far easier than I expected. I certainly could have continued my trip as planned, but I was a little too shaken in the moment. A few hours heading west on the highway cleared my head enough to decide I could probably go ahead and camp one more night after all. :-)

Whenever there is a water loss like that, as long as air is moving, mold and mildew cannot grow. Keeping the blower fan running towards the floor, having windows down, etc. will keep air moving over wet surfaces and prevent any serious problems from developing until you have the circumstances to completely resolve the issue. Many cars stay wet through much of the winter months due to snow melt in the interior, but even with that, the car interiors survive quite well.
@softroadingthewest
@softroadingthewest 3 года назад
That's a good point, I've certainly brought in plenty of snow on my feet. Still...never three gallons worth. :-) I wouldn't have given it a second though had I spilled a 16 oz bottle of water, but the entire remaining contents of my 7-gallon jug disappearing into the depths of the car seemed much more worrisome. Ultimately, between making the 8-hour drive home with the windows down and the heater cranking, plus a few more hot days at home with the car standing open and a fan running 24/7 seemed to take care of it just fine. I have no odor and the car doesn't fog up when closed. Part of my concern with the large volume was the possibility of water penetrating via the floor pan into hidden places where it would never dry and end up causing rust. Hopefully the bulk of the water was actually absorbed by the sponge-like back seat, which did dry out just fine.

Thanks Mike! This trip was an incredible experience and I'm looking forward to making another extended trip as soon as I can swing it. And yeah, between the heat and dryness of the air (and driving 8 hours towards home with the windows rolled down, heh) it actually dried out far easier than I was expecting. I still had to let it sit open with a fan running for a few days at home, but ended up not tearing the interior apart as I initially assumed I would need to do.

I know how you feel with the water, I was out once going down a steep hill and wondered why the drivers footwell was full of water and it was because the tap on my 20L (5 gallon) jerry can had been knocked off and it went through the car. I ended up having to take out all the seats and carpets to get it dry. The only benefit was that it provided a good opportunity to clean the car and also run some wiring under the carpet.

Donald, I’m a geology grad student and a fellow modified Subaru owner- it looks like you were traveling through a volcanic terrane, perhaps an ash deposit. The holes are probably ‘tafoni’ - a weathering phenomenon that can be caused by a bunch of factors. They could also be voids left behind by larger rocks weathering out from a finer matrix. I have a pump in my garage I was poised to plumb into my platform. I’m definitely going to have to add a dedicated kill switch to the circuit. Bad deal man

ok, so you got an extra day (that's good). You lost your water (that's bad). The water is inside your car (that's life giving you lemons). I'd find car wash with a vacuum and suck as much water out of there as I could and keep going with the windows rolled down to air things out (that's making lemonade). I'm interested in seeing how you redesign the water system. Maybe gravity fed out of the roof top box? If you lose your water, you get a car wash?
@softroadingthewest
@softroadingthewest 4 года назад
Aaah, the car wash vacuum idea is brilliant. Using a shop vac was exactly Craig's suggestion. It didn't occur to me to just drive into Nampa and use a car wash vac. Or for that matter, now that I think about it, just going to Craig's house and using *his* shop vac...it was all of an hour away, would've just been a minor detour. At the time, I was thinking I would need to remove the seats, pull the carpet, etc. and was worried about how long that was going to take me. As it happened, by the time I got home (yes, often driving with the windows down and the heat cranking, heh) the floor was nearly dry. I think in my initial distress, I overestimated how much water got down to the floor - I think the backseat acted like a sponge and absorbed the bulk of it. A few hot days at home with the all the doors open and a fan set up running constantly in the car and it was all good. Gravity was one of my initial ideas before I messed around with the original compressor-pressurized system, then the water pump system, and I may revisit some variation on this idea. Still mulling it over (and back to carrying multiple one-gallon jugs for now).

@@softroadingthewest I was recently soaked on a bike ride and had to drive sopping wet. My seats were soaked when I got home, and things are so humid in Mississippi that it took a week before my seats were dry. And a month before the smell of musty damp seat cleared. Love your attitude with "things happen" - very versatile drawer build :-) Stuff happens and it's great when you're able to maintain some sense of humor about it - after all you can't change it so why go ballistic. I got to print me a copy of your campsite bingo. Just came back from a Oregon trip and that would have amused us without end - we had it all, from feces to music to domestic dispute. Is that PEX tubing? Never trusted that. It's ok if you don't move it I guess. Well, a Jeep person would now tell you that the carpet isn't glued down and there's plugs in the bottom to get rid of water - but then, of course no Jeep is actually water tight, so they have to have a drain for when the roof fails to keep water out (yes, I have my plugs permanently removed in winter because I hate stepping into 4 inches of water in the footwell - it's a Jeep thing I guess.). Lucky it's clean water - you just need to dry it out.
@softroadingthewest
@softroadingthewest 4 года назад
It's not PEX, but some kind of tubing they had at my home improvement store. I was originally aiming for something more flexible but this was the only product they could confirm was drinking water safe. The tubing itself is quite sturdy, the problem was the compression fitting, on the piece that I move around a lot. Just enough wiggle to stretch the tubing a bit. I had intended to add an additional hose clamp onto this fitting but forgot to get around to it before this trip. Pretty easily avoidable. When it happened, I was concerned that this quantity of water would be problematic beyond what simply air drying would do and assumed I'd need to disassemble the interior, but judging from the comments here, that was an overreaction on my part. I really thought I'd have people wringing their hands over mold and rust, but to my surprise, nearly everyone has felt that dumping three gallons of water in a car isn't anything to be concerned about. :-) And ultimately, I did not disassemble the interior as I thought I would need to do. I did most of the 8 hours westward with the windows open and heat cranking, and was encouraged by how effective that was, so I decided to give it a few days with the car open and a fan running 24/7. It seemed to do the trick. :-)

@@softroadingthewest I use something like this in my trailer. It's not as stiff as what you used and it can hold pressure well. www.amazon.com/LDR-516-B3810-Braided-Tubing/dp/B004CR4OQI/ref=sr_1_4 You usually see this kind of braided PVC hose in beverage dispensers, ice makers etc. so it's perfectly ok to use for potable water - just get one that states food grade applications because I think there are versions looking the same but designed for industrial use. Since these hoses are not as stiff and more like a garden hose in flexibility, a hose clamp works very well on them.
@Environmenthrall

I had a good laugh at the sardonic bingo. I might print out a copy for myself! 🤣 For a water container, you might consider a quick disconnect for where the tube enters the container, and install an on/off rocker switch for the pump itself. And if you're waiting to upgrade the container, you might consider an RV-type. Something like this: www.amazon.com/Gallon-Fresh-Gray-Water/dp/B07KGJRRGV Also, you might get a Katydin (sp?) or even the gravity-fed LifeStraw system (Costco carries it online), and refill at a creek! Loving whatever filters you're using for the topography shots. So crisp!

Takes 10 minutes to remove all of the rear seats. When I took two trips, Death Valley and Monterey in my WRX, I removed them. Doing so made more room for all the gear, saves a few pounds also. Interesting. I have thought about removing the back seat to accommodate a more practical build but hadn't yet looked into just what that would involve. Really what I would like to do is remove the rear bench but install a single bucket seat in the driver side rear, because I do need to be able to haul both my kids on a regular basis. I don't even know if that would be possible or what I could put back there, but definitely something I've casually kicked around in my head.

Sorry about cutting the trip short. For future reference (water entry from river crossing for example), you can likely pull the rubber plugs from the bottom of the vehicle. Any pooled water on the floor plan can then drain, and the rest would likely evaporate in the dry heat you were camping in.
@softroadingthewest
@softroadingthewest 4 года назад
I didn't even think to look for plugs in the floor pan! I know there's one in the spare tire well, which ended up having no water at all in it, but I was just assuming the car's floor would be solid metal with no openings. Ultimately it ended up drying out pretty easily, but I'm going to look and see if there are drains so I know for the future. Thanks!

Holy heck. Great series. Hate that you runt your car on the last episode. I say that because it happened to me too. I thought it would be a good idea on the way back to run the AC to get rid of the moisture, but instead it sucked it in and the vehicle forever after had mold in the system even after ripping it apart and drying it. Good luck bro, I hope it turns out better than me.

So far so good. I think it helped that it was so hot & dry. I spent quite a bit of the drive back with the windows down and the heater running (pulling outside air) plus a few hot days at home with a fan running 24/7. Almost 3 months later now and I have not seen or smelled any long term effects.

first, ha! Pockets in the rocks: different layers erode at a different speed. Love that trip. Just looks beautiful. By the way, there is quite some play between your front fender on your drivers side and the hood at 02:45 would you consider this a normal flex? Shit about the water, I thought about using a deep tray for my water canister, maybe thats a good reason to do soon, haha. Well shit happens, but as long as no one is harmed, eh. I guess that belongs to the camping/overlanding experience. I found some water sensors for like 5-10€ on amazon working with a 10year battery. You could just put them into the tray where the water canister is standing, if something flows out it goes WEWEWEWEWEWE.
@softroadingthewest
@softroadingthewest 4 года назад
I *think* that's pretty consistently the same gap all the way around both sides on my car. It was involved in a front-end accident before I bought it and there are a few minor quirks under the hood, though the hood itself fits and operates with no problem. The water sensor is a brilliant idea! I was constantly nervous about this jug failing, something like that makes total sense!
@Dennis-1367
@Dennis-1367 4 года назад
@@softroadingthewest Ah that could explain it! Other than an tone, I think you could just use an LED-light connected to a small battery with the wires going into the water tray, the wires being open. Just tape them down and if theres water in there the light should go up. Maybe the resistance of the water is good enough so you dont need resistors, but should be easy to find out. Fancy way would be adding this warning light to the dashboard next to additional light switches. Uh, business idea :D

I really enjoyed this series of videos. Not sure why you'd ditch the trip over a water spill. You were in a desert, it's going to evaporate faster than at home. Maybe get a big sponge and 12v fan at walmart to blow across it when you aren't driving around. I can understand the frustration though. I had a collapsible water carrier fail in my trunk on the way to my campsite. Luckily the campsite had water, but I would never use those things again.
@softroadingthewest
@softroadingthewest 4 года назад
Well, it was 3+ gallons. That seemed less like a "spill" and more like a potentially damaging flood. :-) At the time, I was convinced I would need to remove the seats, tear out the carpet, etc., to get everything adequately dried out, then reinstall it all again, all of which was going to be a time consuming process for which I'd need my last couple of days off work. Thus abandoning the trip and heading home to dive into that project. Ultimately it wasn't necessary. It did dry more than I expected by the time I got home (driving with windows down and heat on most of the way). A few more hot days at home with the car left wide open and a fan running 24/7 finished the job pretty well. At the time though, I didn't think it was going to be that simple and that I had a bunch of work to do.

I totally agree with SF if you find that you have panned to quickly you can slow it down a little bit in your editing program, more than likely you can separate your audio from your video so that the audio track will play normally as long as your audio is not just as long as your video clip, so start your pan, no talking, stop talking before the end of the pan, or just do VO. A tip from a video girl.

Beautiful scenery! I would suggest that due to the type of driving you do to look at a Square Body (pickup, Suburban, or Blazer). The K series is a 4x4 so it would have given you the ground clearance that you needed for some of these places you had to bypass. They are also very strong and capable vehicles. There is also the Ford, Dodge, Toyota, and Honda off-road vehicles if you do not want the extra room of the pickup or the Suburban. There are very few disadvantages to these vehicles and parts are very easy to come by. It would not have changed the issue of the pump draining your water tank, but it would have not been as disastrous as it was in the Forester. The square body vehicles were built for the longest period of all the vehicles mentioned with the same body style and similar engine and suspension components so they are easier to repair and service in the field.
@softroadingthewest
@softroadingthewest 4 года назад
There are a lot of vehicles that would be better than my Forester. Most are not as economical to buy and operate, but also, I honestly enjoy the challenge of doing this in a somewhat unconventional vehicle that everyone tells me I shouldn't be using. :-) I mean...I'm sure some kind of 4x4 is inevitable at some point in my future. But for now the little Forester gets me *almost* everywhere I want to go. Thanks for watching!

@softroadingthewest
@softroadingthewest 3 года назад
Yep.The stupid thing is, that was my plan...I was going to install a switch back in the "kitchen" area so I would only turn on the pump at moments I actively needed water. But since I needed a disconnect point for being able to pull the drawer box in and out of the car, I ended up just letting that be my safety switch - and would invariably just leave it connected to power all evening in camp. If I redo some kind of powered water delivery, a convenient switch will *definitely* be part of the design next time around. :-)

I feel like I'm pretty easy going, but sometimes I refuse to ignore someone's stupid BS and end up with a hater. * shrug * The ultimate irony is, ANY viewer engagement is better than none, so even by leaving me a thumbs down, they're helping the channel. :-) All the music is acquired from the licensing service I use, but most of these artists also have their music out there via other avenues. Including credits is not a bad idea at all, I get asked fairly often "what song is at XX:XX?" and I never know the answer off the top of my head. Plus I truly appreciate how these artists' work help me tell the story and would be happy to help them get more recognition. I'll try to think of doing that next time around, it really wouldn't take me long to add.
