If anyone interested, I use elektron overbridge in the analog rytm, to synch with the daw, then I send the clock from the analog rytm to a Kenton 25 thru box and distribute the clock to other devices, and no latency at all. Great explanation of the multiclock.
@RadekPilich
@RadekPilich Год назад
you must be ignoring the different latencies each device respond to the incoming midi, i.e 5 ms in case of drum machine A and 15 ms in case is drum machine B. it might not be a big deal with synths, but it's often a problem with sequencers.
@DubFreakuencies
@DubFreakuencies Год назад
@@RadekPilich hello, I didn’t measure, but to my ears it sounds in synch, only real problem is to synch my Jupiter Xm sequencer, but that’s another story. Edit: I forgot to tell that I don’t actually record any synth into the daw. I just use Ableton fx into some audio inputs and some clipper, tape emulation and limiter on the master channel.
@untml
@untml Год назад
@@RadekPilich it is a good point but actually the more they are "closer" to each other the more phasing you will hear :because of jitter, even with the perfect midi, it will never be perfect for layring sounds. the shift function of the er-m is more of a creative feature... you still get sample accurate midi clock with elektron overbridge, people use to sequence instruments with midi clock and no computers.

@@winesynths I had the SP-16 for years. It's a great unit with the very crucial misbehaviour of loosing a tiny time gap when switching patterns (Beat Thang anyone? LOL). So if you run it for an hour and keep switching patterns all the time the sync will be totally off. The solution is to make the SP-16 the master clock or not to switch patterns a lot (unlike with the Beat Thang, the time gap is very small and won't really be noticed unless switching the pattern very often).

Hi, i try in Ableton (to sync a TR-8S) with the track delay tricks and it doesn't work...it starts when i press play but it seems that whatever value i put in the track delay, i still have to do some NEGATIVE adjustements, and of course i can't in this mode. Do i miss something?

If the TR-8s starts to early, you could try to delay the other instruments on the MC. It‘s difficult for me to give advice for such individiual problems with gear I do not use like the TR-8s. So I hope you will make it work! 🍀

I used to use SMPTE back in the late 80s with an 8 track tape machine. Used to sync the tape with MusixX on the Commodore Amiga. All vocal and guitar tracks were recorded onto tape and all the synths, samplers and drum machines played via MIDI from MusicX. We would mix down onto DAT. This looks like a nice clock, and sounds very tight.

@@winesynths the Amiga was a very good music computer. It didn't have the built in midi interface that the ST did, but there were plenty of interfaces available. And sampling modules. I didn't really use that aspect though, as I had an Akai. Well, except when using MED and OctaMED trackers. Although it only had 4 sampling voices, OctaMED, through some canny coding, gave you 8 voices. MusicX was an incredible MIDI sequencer. In its day. I think that Prince used it, so that was good enough for me 😀

I had a friend who made music for the Amiga demo scene. But it never really was my thing. My first music computer was a 1040ST with Cubase. But I only had a Juno-60 with DCB to Midi and a TR-707 and later a Sony DAT. I also had a friend with a 4 track Tascam Porta Studio, a DX9 and a Poly61! 🤓 So little by little I accumulated Midi stuff around it and brought it together with the analogue Synths. The pinnacle of 90ies was a fully expanded JV-1080 and a K2000 as Sampler. Then you needed a big desk, outboard an FX to mix everything! Later on I bought a PC and regretted it forever and at one point I totally stoppd producing and played saxophone! 😁 Now I use an M1 Mac Mini as my main studio computer and for video editing. Compared to 30 years ago, it's like Science Fiction! And I love it because everything works just flawless without any annoying computer hassle! 👽🚀🛸

So when recording multiple synths in as audio at once always has timing issue. They have to mess with latency settings, track delay or midi offsets settings after calculating each devices latency thru recording a pulse. Does the ERM clock offset parameters allow you to find each devices latency and set it and forget it once and never have recording audio timing issues again?
@danwalker7199
@danwalker7199 Год назад
You can save per-output presets with pre-defined latency, but I find it so easy to just play with the channel latency knobs until it sounds good. Sometimes you want a particular device to be a little ahead or behind, or you're trying to partly counteract a slow envelope. It's a game-changer.

@winesynths 2 месяца назад
yes absolutely! The Sync and Midi Ports work separately. Connected via USB it will show 4 Midi Ports with 16 channels each in Ableton. But you won‘t send the Midi Clock out from here!

will this fix the delay from a midi notes in my daw that triggers the sounds in my outboard synth? when i record the audio from my synth that is triggered by midi from my daw, the audio arrives several milliseconds later. Very good and detailled review! Thanks! I have been using Multiclock for years. As a collector of old drum machines this device was the solution to all of my sync and MIDI clock jitter problems. The only small problem is that DIN Sync only supports 24 ppq (Roland standard). Korg used 48 ppq for the clock. This is a very rare problem only which can be addressed by programming the drum machine accordingly. BTW: Besides Atari’s glorious MIDI-timing my Commodore C64 with a C-Lab Supertrack cartridge delivered a rock solid clock as well 😊
@winesynths
@winesynths Год назад
Thanks for this interesting information! So which Korg drum machines had DIN-Sync? 🤓 Maybe this can be fixed with an update. But first let's see, how it and who continues with the Mulitclock!
@MarkusCologne
@MarkusCologne Год назад
Korg drum machines with DIN Sync are DDM-110, DDM-220 and KPR-77. Not the most sought-after models though. But you never know 😉 I am not aware of other Korg machines. Direct successors DDD-1 and DDD-5 were equipped with MIDI. When running DIN Sync it is very important to use cables with all 5 pins connected. Dedicated MIDI-cables (3 pins only) will not work. I also hope that the E-RM products will still be made available in the future.
@winesynths
@winesynths Год назад
I had a DDM-110 "Super Drums" lying around in my studio for quite a while! I never realized that it had Sync! Found it really crappy back in the days! 😀 Concerning the Mulitclock there will be probably be some good news on the Superbooth in May! What I can tell you, for now, is that the original developer is working on a firmware update. But it's still a very confidential rumor! 😁

I had a conversation with the developper the other day and asked this! According to him it should be perfectly possible to split the audio signal with a y-cable to connect a second multiclock. @RadekPilich

small latency asynchronicity is not that big deal with synths. it's more of an issue for drum machines / sequencers.... and 4 outputs should be quite enough for those.
@MadelnMachines
@MadelnMachines 9 месяцев назад
Does this allow you to send midi notes sent from your DAW to your external hardware synths and keep these hardware synths in sync (if they don't have a built sequencer)?
@winesynths
@winesynths 9 месяцев назад
Totally. It‘s also a fully fledged 4 port Midi Interface with a routing matrix. It‘s no problem to send sync to a drum machine on channel 1 and Midi notes to a synth on channel 2 chained over the Thru.
@MadelnMachines
@MadelnMachines 9 месяцев назад
@@winesynths So the multiclock just connects to your PC/Mac via USB to get the midi output? I really don't understand this though - I see lots of people using it to sync their DAW to their external hardware but then ERM say: "The multiclock improves the timing of all instruments which are clocked by it. Nevertheless, you can not manipulate notes that you send from your DAW to your synths through the multiclock MIDI Interface. Keep your sequences in the internal sequencers of your external instruments or sequencers for tight lines!" That makes me think it wouldn't work
@winesynths
@winesynths 9 месяцев назад
It does both in parallel. You plug it to your computer with USB and you will get 4 Midi Ports. The main function is the stable midi clock that is generated from an audio output signal of your DAW. There is an Audio Input on the Midi Clock that converts this trigger signal to Midi-Clock. The reason is that DAW Midi is not prioritized and tends to jitter. So your beats may be less tight if you try to sync a drum machine with the DAW.

Thanks for the suggestions! I use the Midi-Port of the Arturia Audiofuse and sometimes a Scarlet. And I have a big powered USB-Hub, where I connect all the USB-MIDI stuff. The Ableton file you see at the end of the video is the final result of the process. Usually I like to start with external sequencers, arpeggiators and drum machine patterns to create the base of a track. Just like we do it in our jam sessions. That's why sync became a real problem at one point. Then I record it and start to cut out an arrangement from this multitrack block. I am actually working on a "how-to" video where I show some details of this track on the screen. Also, to try a new Live-based format.

Unfortunately, I have a few pieces of gear that has no thru so am forced to use USB and it really kills my enjoyment of it that it can't play in time with everything else..
