It was good to grow up during those times . I was 4 going on 5 that summer in 1982. I think Stephan speilberg is the greatest of all time.

PJ Neslo - Many, many films still do this just as effectively. What you’re experiencing is called nostalgia. The past always feels better than it actually was at the time. When I went to see Titanic in 1997, it had almost the same magical quality on my young adult mind that ET did on my preteen mind. When your entertainment is placed into the hands of an expert filmmaker, the magic will happen. Of course, ET is the type of film that impacts an entire generation, the same way The Wizard of Oz did, so there is that that is unique. Not all films impact entire generations or define eras like that. But the magic of films still happens every year when we get the work of a master storyteller.

one thing i notice is there was much less vegetation and clutter in 1982...today the neighborhood looks much more claustrophobic and closed in. i like the 1982 look better...its more wide open and majestic

New neighborhoods even today will always have fewer trees/foliage and all. Some people when shopping for houses prefer older neighborhoods due to mature trees.

The Station Fire came right down to ET's house. The whole mountain behind it burned. Sky Crane helicopters sucked water out of the reservoir at the end of Haines Canyon and flew for days in and out to drop water on hot spots. Thanks to the fire crews many homes were saved. Camel's Back is the mountain behind ET's house and we used to hike up there as kids in the 1960's. The house is one of the highest ones in the 7 Hills development. The ET video tape played several hundred times in our TV room when my boy was small. I took him there to stand in ET's driveway and took his picture. He's 30 now. Time flies. Good location documentary, thanks Daniel.

This film literally changed my life as a child. It’s still my favorite film of all time. Times were so rough for us as kids...this film was my first huge escape...our school took us to see it...and I was STUNNED. I saw it at a pivotal moment in my childhood...same age as Elliott was...and I longed for that life. I had no idea that kids were free to run and play like that and have a loving relationship with parents. It was so foreign to me. That home and life...they looked so rich to me. A room with things in it?? Pictures on the walls...toys laying about? It was so enchanting. And I dreamed of having something amazing like that happen to me...something important and beautiful. Films can really touch you when you’re very young.

And the same here in Australia when we have been to the Mad Max locations sites. And u can still visit almost all of them now. And have been taking pics or filming. Usually with the replica Interceptors. People come up & ask what we are doing ? And when u tell them , they get that look. Then they start taking pics as well. Classic.

@tkramer62283 Thanx for your comment! Yes you are right, the camera should have stood 40-50 meters further to the right. The problem was, that there was a high fence (You actually see a picture at the end) and a sign that it is forbidden to enter that plattform. Also the scene where the kids fly over the village was film on that plattform.
