lol - I spent a lot of time on the subtitles (and had a bit of fun) not really expecting anyone to read them (I always turn off subtitles). Thanks a lot Kevin.
This is awesome! I was just thinking about the old Roland D-Beam the other day and wishing a stand-alone version existed. I’m definitely going to have to pick one of these up.
This looks great; very well presented and explained too! I suppose the noise waveform is being added as a firmware update? Since the waveforms are so similar to the SID's it makes me wonder how much work it would be to allow multiple waveforms to be enabled and at once like the SID can do. I'm not even sure exactly how the waveforms are combined in the SID. One source said they were logically ANDed together but it didn't seem that was completely true. It also may vary between SID models.
Thanks for checking it out Robin. You are right, the noise waveform will be a firmware update. I'll use the new (so-far-experimental) noise waveform in my Sunday Jam tomorrow so you can hear how that sounds. I'm aware from my MIDISID project that combining the waveforms produces very different sounds to the plain waveforms and gives you more sound options, so I am keen to implement those in e-ther if I can. I haven't yet really looked into how you combine waveforms, or indeed how the SID does it. I'm waiting for an 8-bit show and tell video to tell me about that 😂 I had heard about the 'anding', and that the 8580 may do it differently to the 6581 - I may well have heard that from you!
Wow. Some really nice updates. I love the note bypass controller mode. You could essentially use e-ther in place of a ribbon controller with this mode. So cool. BTW, I love the integrated oscillator on the v2. The audio daughterboard was such a nice feature on the v1. Now it’s built-in! I’ll have to get the firmware update for mine. Some of those software parameters look really nice. A++
Thanks so much for your response Kale. I should have had the email for existing e-ther owners ready to send at the same time as the release of this video, but you should receive that today with all of the details you need. I'm sure you'll enjoy the new features.
Thanks for your interest. There's a lot of configurability but that's one thing that isn't configurable. Making the volume work in the opposite way to a real theremin felt more natural to me (a non-theremin player) and also solved some problems. Not least how to stop it from screaming at full volume when you move away from it.
Appreciate the response! I realized just after I posted this that you addressed on your website. And your reversal makes total sense! Can’t wait to get one!!!
Hi sheela, first of all you are awsome :)! second this device is so cool. but i have a question can i configure the midi cc to control osc filters in VST Plugins?
Hi Uber, thank you for your interest. I can't tell you for sure that it will work with your equipment but I can tell you exactly what MIDI messages it can send. It will generate pitch bend messages from one sensor and either expression or modwheel messages from the other. By default it sends note on/off but there is a mode where you can suppress the note on/off and just have the expression and pitch bend. More details are in the manual and I'm happy to discuss this in more detail or provide more information if you'd like to email.
