Absolutely brilliant, wish I had the courage to tackle this job, or any other regarding post war trains (1947-55). I inherited some of my grandfathers Lionel locomotives. (2344 f3 powered unit, a 2338 Milwaukee Road GP7, and a 681 steam locomotive with a 2671wx tender). Unfortunately they have been exposed to moisture. They need some restoration work, cleaned, oiled ect... My grampie worked for the Erie Lackawanna railroad, conductor on Phoebe Snow as well as many other trains (of course). However, it saddens me, that I don't have the capabilities to restore his trains. He passed away, I was only 3yrs old, but growing up, we'd go to visit my grandmother and go directly to turn on my deceased grandfather's huge train layout. It wouldn't take long and we were reprimanded... (Such a great childhood memory, my eyes water as I try to complete this comment, short story). Thank you for your video sir.

Thanks for sharing. I say take one engine, whichever seems the simplest, slowly take it apart and take a picture of where the parts go. Go slow and familiarize yourself with the parts. The clean and reassemble the engine and try it out. Once you get familiar with the components, the engines will seem all very similar, and the feeling of bringing one back to working order is the best. Give it a shot, and email me with questions if you get stuck.

Great video. I always hated taking those e units apart as it always seemed like it was going to explode apart and have everything go flying every which way. Really nice use of the c-clip pliers to pry the sides apart. I will give that a try the next time I have to take one apart. Thank you for sharing!

The secret? Video editing. It’s a monotonous and often frustrating repair. But a little practice and it’s not too bad. There is also a tool I believe that helps hold everything’s you work on it. Don’t remember where I saw it. Might be worth looking into. Or just mail them all to me and I’ll fix them for you. 👍

@@dagryffynhobby Helping hands might be the tool you are referring to. Harbor Freight used to stock them.

i have never put back together a e unit as quick as you did..i usually have to put it down and the next day work with getting it to line up and snap back in place.

It usually takes a bit of time fiddling to get it right. I won’t lie, it’s the beauty of video editing. My hands are getting clumsier so it’s getting harder and harder to do quickly

@@dagryffynhobbyThanks for asking, Lionel 1654. I picked one of these up recently and it is wired for forward only. I have an e-unit from a 2026 I believe will fit but I never wired one in before, Looking forward to a video if you have the time to do one. I checked RU-vid and although there are plenty of repair videos none on how to actually install one. Thanks for all of your other excellent videos.

@@poconotrainman I don’t have a 1654 but I should be able to do it on something similar. The instal is pretty uniform across most steam engines

I have a Lionel 1130 model. I took the E-unit out and repaired it, but now I don't know where the wires need to be attached to the chassis points. I'm not good at wiring, so can you please make a re-attaching the wires (1 at a time) video? either that or please comment a how-to here. Please just show where the individual wires need to go. Frustrated.

I've looked at a few e-unit wiring schematics, and it shows wire labled in different colors. But when i look at an e-unit, all the wires are/look black! How do I know which wire goes where?
