2021 was one challenging year for all of us. I've worked hard to serve communities and institutions this year and the only times for myself were spent watching films and sending films to film festivals. One thing I realized during the pandemic was that I have not given myself and my films much attention in years. Which is why in 2020, I promised myself to finish many of my unedited films and share it with the world - those interested in the kind of personal and very independent films that I do in collaboration with artists and friends. On the side, my little studio (E Unlimited) helped distribute little films from the regions that wouldn't have had seen light of day.
I believe in inspiring people and educating them. So I dwell least on losses and see what we can do to help in film literacy; in training the educators; and in preparing materials for students around the country, giving them access to all our films for classroom education. In 2021, we have given a lot of teachers from very far provinces access to our films so that Filipino students can view, appreciate or critique them. According to Facebook analytics, my time spent on my personal account is only 1-2 minutes average per day so there were many friends whom I have missed to greet because we've been busy on cultivating materials for online use so that we counter fake news and misinformation with creative alternatives that foster critical thinking and exchange.
And there's that desire to make the country proud. To let many young Filipinos know that if I can make it without any budget, they too can. Telling stories in many ways and styles broadens our ideas on the possibilities of film and multimedia. And sharing our works to international audiences truly inspired many (yes, I read all your messages and emails though I really can't reply to all). Family, friends, audiences, supporters and especially collaborators have inspired and touched me too in many ways. As always, I am forever grateful.
Many of our friends and family members have passed away in 2021. To them I dedicate my humble art and films. And to those of us who have survived another year, this video is for YOU. I cannot thank you all enough. During the pandemic years alone (2020-2021), we've been selected in 36 international film festivals (19 in 2021); nominated 4 times; declared finalists and honorable mentions by 8 film fests; and awarded twice in Berlin and in Copenhagen. This is a testament to the talent of my collaborators-friends and proof of the resilient talent of the Filipinos. Without them, I could not have done it.
This year, as in the past, I count the blessings and, while I cannot share blessings to all and can never repay you all for your goodness, I continue to be grateful by committing to work further on literacy programs in the next year.
