Thanks Kalani. I can't say I'm one of the "kids" at 71, but I certainly can say that you never stop learning. I have been searching for the right "woodblock" sound to install into my electronic drum kit and came across your video. I began my percussionist career at about 10 years old, but until I saw this video, I had never heard of a Temple Block. I love the deeper sound. Thanks for the introduction to this wonderful (new to me) instrument. Keep teaching my friend.

I would say I'm one of the kids at 35, because... even though I've always had a thing for percussion, I'm only just diving into it. XD - I always have only known about percussion-stuff superficially, but like you, I also never heard of a temple-block. I saw a "synthetic" one, so I was like "OK, so what's a real one?" and now I'm here.

I'm trying to add percussion into a composition I'm working on right now and this was such a helpful and concise comparison between the two sounds I was considering. Thank you for sharing your talent for teaching!!

You told me exactly what I needed to hear as I want to use a wood block as a kick drum (like) and want a lower/bassier tone

Thanks for the cool video! Any recommendation for a woodblock type instrument that has more of a click and less of a tone sound? I am looking for something that would sound like playing a groove on a rim of a drum, but I'd like it to be it's own instrument, if that makes any sense :)

Maybe dry, high-pitched claves

These sounds are beautiful! I still prefer the teponaztli, though. The teponaztli is an Aztec instrument that is a wooden tongue log drum.

Its probably the most important instrument in the accompanying ensemble. The other instruments take their cue from the guy playing the blocks, basically taking the place of the conductor, he has to keep an eye on what's going on on stage, slowing the music up or down to keep up with the performers, indicate the playing of filler for when performers fluff their lines or decide to ab-lib.

Not to be a smartass (I actually learned something here), but isn't the temple-block here just plates of plywood glued together, as opposed to a single piece of wood hollowed out? - As in, there was never anything on the inside of it, because they're plates put together and they also made the cutouts at some point. - But thanks for the explanation!
