My 20 year old 3 litre Jag runs on E10 no problem - Even Jaguar themselves said it was compatible. On the upside, don't to worry about rubber fuel lines. There are made of PLASTIC including fuel tank !

We pu son in a 1930 car and ran like a bag of shit. It is ok on E5.

I'm sorry but that's bullshit they're telling you/us, it's pretty simple, E10 has been introduced to be 'greener' than E5 fuel, their logic is that they introduce more ethanol, a relative in the alcohol group, and as we all well know what happens when alcohol is open to air it evaporates quicker causing less damage to the environment, but at the same time, because ethanol is alcohol based, it trashes rubber and plastics by a chemical reaction, it heats up through the reaction, cools down after it evaporates and because of that rapid change in temperature it disintegrates. No amount of written 'proof' is going to convince me that it's safe to run on it. I'm no scientist, but as I'm an artist, alchemy is part of the process of making art because you're playing with chemicals and fluids all the time, I've also been on this planet long enough to know better than to accept some random person's opinion, use what's given to us, our brains!

And before wide use of ethanol corn that was grown would rot in storage.

Try running on E15 or E85, Both have been used in U.S for more than 10 years. Even 1980's Chevy's are E10 compatible. It actually say's that they can run on 10% ethanol in owners manual !

Thanks for sharing your experience, sorry to read that all those issues arose but glad it's all cleaned up, fixed and running smoothly. Hopefully they realise they should keep ethanol free fuel as a 2nd option at the pump.

That's one of the big downsides with E10. It contains less energy per volume unit so the vehicle ends up using more fuel. Buying more fuel = more tax paid at the pump. Makes you wonder.

Honest??? He doesn't know what he's talking about! Ethanol attracts water into the tank? Rubbish, water is formed in tanks from condensation naturally produced from temperatures going up and down, ie; day to night, summer to winter, not from ethanol attracting it! And you're taking what he says as the truth? On older cars and garden machinery it is bad. Use E5 if you can, it performs better and a bit pricier, E10 does not perform as well and can damage your fuel system.

Thankfully there are still some pumps out there that are offering 0% ethanol to help. You're also right about the higher volume used, which leads to the need for more frequent top ups.

@@thomasschafer7268 that's funny, isn't it? I ride a fazer 1000 and i noticed the difference almost immediately when i put E10 in it compared to E5. Also if you look up what ethanol is, it's an ALCOHOL, which has a chemical reaction with rubber and plastics, so it WILL corrode seals and rubber hoses a lot quicker than other fuels with less ethanol content. Remember the government's bullshit scam announcement about diesel being better for the planet and then a couple of years later coming out with the fact that it worse? So, you'll be paying out ridiculous money to have them all changed in a couple of years, i hope you're saving!

I use e30 and seem to get better milage than e10. Don't agree with the less energy claim as BTUs are used for that argument. BTU is a measure of heat. Is your vehicle using a steam engine?

We put some E10 in a 1930 Chrysler and it ran appallingly, it was fine on E5. E10 i a big con.

Noticed my 2008 iconic model Toyota Prius (UK) started to run rough and noisy on E10 fuel - it was subtle but nonetheless disconcerting. The engine took much longer to warm up - using up far more fuel and being much less efficient. I was loosing almost 20% of my normal range per tankful (45 litres). Switched to using E5 Supreme Super Uleaded 99+ (Esso), and my MPG shot straight back up and mileage range too. Just broke my record this summer - 653 miles @ 69.4mpg from a tankful of E5 Super Unleaded 99RON. (Actually used about 41 litres). Forgive me if I don’t believe in E10 - but in the UK it’s a rip off - especially in a high efficiency hybrid vehicle. I’m sticking with Esso’s Supreme Unleaded 99+ - more expensive but my engine runs quieter, less vibration, is more responsive and extremely fuel efficient. It just works.

Water is formed in the tank from condensation, which is formed from temperatures going up and down from day to night, summer to winter. Water and fuel don't mix and left over time it will ruin metal tanks, ethanol also eats away at plastic tanks, that's why a lot of Triumph bikes have had issues with ethanol, they bubble and crack, that's what ethanol does, has a chemical reaction with rubber and plastics, it heats up and when it cools it cracks and dissolves, rendering them useless

Keep the water hose away from your gasoline filler.

Thanks for sharing this experience, the more anecdotal information is out there with specific vehicle types, the better people can look after their cars. I'm glad yours was able to get fixed under warranty and is still running well with the precautions now taken. It's frustrating of course that the issue came about in the first place and hopefully manufactures will take these kinds of learnings to make their cars more robust in future models.

@@car_ventures This happened because Kia remapped a 5 speed cruise control program to work on a 6 speed, causing it to drop 2 gears to accelerate up hills under the CC. They had to add the second pump to make it work and didn't realize what would happen. According to Kia, they have seen this before, but don't usually talk about what is causing it, but I had an idea what was happening and told them to take pictures.

@@RacerX888 The car has two fuel pumps because it has a direct injection engine in it. It has nothing to do with the size of the car or engine. The low pressure pump delivers more fuel than the high pressure pump is capable of using. The excess fuel is used to cool the high pressure pump and is returned to the fuel tank.

Yep, lower amount of energy per volume unit. Requires more fuel to be used. Performance wise, it may be possible to tune the engine to compensate, I've not come across anyone yet that has done so but would be interested to see if anyone has. Usually a slight amount of spark advance can help... if the engine is happy with a little extra timing.

@@car_ventures Thank you for that info mate and yeah i will definitely just have to cough up more in future for E5 as my old car coughs and splutters using E10 and i just could not believe how bad the economy was after putting E10 in the tank , it is definitely a scam.

Yes, i would be concerned! E10 IS bad for rubber and plastics, which seals, hoses etc.., are made from, ethanol is an alcohol and we all know what alcohol does to plastics and rubber, it causes a chemical reaction, heats the rubber and plastics up, cools down when it's evaporated, and then cracks and dissolves, rendering them useless! It's a scam, they want us to buy into this bullshit electric vehicle by a certain date plan, which they don't fully understand, because to get the vast amounts of electricity, to charge them, it has to burn off fossil fuels because we STILL haven't come up with another source to produce it, and until then our future is looking very bleak!

@@car_ventures I've noticed straight away that my fazer 1000 motorcycle runs crap on that E10 fuel compared to E5, it runs lumpy and powerless. Every now and again i switch from one to the other so i know straight away how bad the bike runs.

Stick with E5 on these cars - we use a metal pellet in the tank from Sussex fuel promotions and they contract the problems of these Ethanol fuels well.

Louise, they are probably telling the truth here. Presumably, they are using different types of plastics and silicone rubbers, each with different properties. Incidentally, did you vote for E10? I know I was even given the chance! Governments exist to tax the people, and to wield power. They do not exist to help the people. The use of the police during covid earlier on was outrageous. Fancy fining two women out of a woodland walk because they had a cup of coffee in their hands, and therefore, they were not exercising. This reflects the state of this current government and culture within the police hierarchy. Did we vote for this?

Louise, good question. As rubber and plastics are made of different formulas, modern rubbers and seals tend to have been made with a level of tolerance towards multi use fuels, so usually incorporate something like a nitrile lining. This is less permeable to ethanol and helps keeps the rubber intact. The part about the different R rated hoses didn't go into much detail but effectively those R ratings define the standard with which the rubber compounds need to adhere. Multi fuels were less common years ago so a lot of the fuel components didn't need to have the chemical makeup to cope with anything other than regular unleaded. In recent years where it's more common place, manufacturers of parts would build components that are compatible with different chemicals e.g. ethanol. Hope that helps!

E10 fuel = less MPG= more visits to the pump to refuel= more fuel tax for the treasury.

@@Dippy7520 Angela, an "old petrol" flame burns with a hotter flame than ethanol. That means there is more energy in "old" E5 petrol than ethanol. That means you get less energy from E10 fuel than E5 fuel. That means less mpg. That means we have been conned again! If things deteriorate much further in this country I'm thinking of acquiring duel citizenship and of making plans to exit. You showed these villains up for who they really are.

Schlawinius -- I am not convinced at all with your hygroscopic argument. Ethanol is hygroscopic. Yes. This means there is water in the system which can do damage, including rusting. E10 will absorb more water than E5 which means there will always be more water in the system with E10 than E5, making water damage more likely with E10 than E5. Phase separation into a hydrocarbon phase and aqueous ethanol phase would require a fair volume of water absorption, and would take time (and then only with the petrol filler cap off). However, damage is supposedly due to water content and not due to the 1-phase or 2-phase fuel system in the fuel tank.

Uh??? You're staying with E10 yet it causes more harm to the rubber seals, hoses and plastics? That doesn't make any sense, E5 is better for vehicle not E10, E10 has more ethanol in it, hence the name, which is an alcohol, which is destructive to all rubber and plastics. So yes, it is a government scam to get people to buy electric vehicles by a certain date by introducing this crap to the market for cheap, but do you remember the 'diesel is better for the planet' announcement on the news a while back? All vehicles can run happily on E5, it's E10 that's causing all the problems with the rubber seals and hoses/tubing, not the other way around... Unless you mean it the other way around? 5 = 5% ethanol, 10 = 10% ethanol...

@@A_Pt_9298 I simply don't trust the government with anything they say and impose on us. Its a fact that they want to get rid of petrol & diesel cars by 2030 and my suspician is that this overly priced E5 is there to cripple older cars and most probably will be intentionally primed to destroy the older engines. The E5 ranges from 1% to 5% ethanol and the E10 ranges from 6% to 10 %. There is a kit for seperating ethanol that you can use and I will be testing both out soon anyway but I still think E5 will be intentionally polluted with other chemicals never mind the price rise they have put on it. Do you remember when most cars were petrol and diesel was running at 40p per litre while petrol was around £1. This was a ploy to get everyone on diesel and when we did they put the price of diesel up to the same as petrol. Ps check your vehicle manuals on the older cars and it will say that E10 is fine for your vehicle. Its all a scam.

They are certainly trying to make things more difficult, the Oxford scheme is something right out of 1984 and thankfully there are protests taking place about it. The current 2030 ICE sales ban means that hybrids can still be built after 2030, so those will still be on the road for many years after 2030. There is probably at least 20-30 years where there will be a prevalent amount of ICE's around. By which time cars sold new today will almost be classed as classics. The best thing people can do is reject proposals, support those whose aim for sanity of governance, and buy non EV's and hybrids. I know several people whom change their cars every few years but have bought EVs because they say it's the way things are going. Even though they will be changing cars a few times before 2030, so they could have bought ICEs. The issue is it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. People buy EVs because they think it's the future, as it's what they hear from adverts. By buying an EV, manufacturers then report higher EV sales. Publications then report that people clearly want EV's based on increased production numbers. It then justifies more R&D, more ad spend... more people see ads, the cycle keeps going. That's not to say EV's shouldn't exist, only to say that there should be a mix and consumers must have choice, and EV's are not a good choice for the typical consumer. It's worth keeping them going, we're at least one generation away from seeing a significant change out there.

It makes it a lot easier that's for sure. I drive a diesel too and love the mileage it gets

Not well. You will need fuel system cleaner regularly, and octane booster as well to keep it running smoothly. It would be like running a high performance engine on 87 octane gas. It will run like shit if you have a high perf engine.

@@RacerX888 Fortunately (?) it's a standard 1600cc SOHC (aka Pinto engine) engine, so no real performence to speak of.

No. The valve stem seals stops oil going down the valve stem into the combustion chamber! If u have fuel there u have a big problem!

I've heard about 2 stroke oil and think that's a great idea here and there, especially if the car sits a while (months). I'm not too familiar with 2008 VW Polo, I'd be surprised if it had issues. So long as it's regularly fuelled and doesn't sit for months then a mix of e5 and e10 is a good preventative measure. Maybe alternate half tank tops ups between the two. That will help dilute as much as possible. Doing 3 tanks e5 and 1 tank e10 would mean it sees a higher concentration on that 4th tank. Usually e10 isn't fully 10% (I forgot to mention that in the video). It could be up to 10% so could easily be say 6% or 4% depending on the station and time of year. Likewise e5 is the max rating. But I'm with you.. treat it as worst case and take preventative measures based around that for the best possible outcome. I've seen a couple of carbs recently that sat over winter (6 months) empty, after running e85 (85% ethanol). They had some corrosion and needed to be cleaned out. But during a race season where they are regularly being used they run fine. It's during down time dry out that the corrosion seems noticeable, and it's running almost entirely ethanol. Bit like hard water limescale. Inside the copper and plastic pipes they are fine. But the sinks and shower surfaces which go through drying cycles, are where the limescale builds up. Same with a toilet cistern, the parts which see limescale build up are the areas where the top of the water level is. Or a more elegant example would be a shower head.

that's pistons. not fuel, or your timming is out, piston rings need replacing or you need block sleeves as its loose, how many miles you done, it may be the crank or misfire, vpower 99 octaine is good in celica's E10 will be fine just upgrade valve stem seals and get silicone hoses

But it never did it with e5 fuel, if i put e5 in it runs smooth and quiet 🤔

@@rcplaytime shell and tesco have protected the Vpower range its staying at E5 its called Vpower fuel cost 5p more a litre but you get more out of it and itl make ya faster, get the Vpower if you can find it, nealry all tesco and shell garages sell it, some others sell it but its called summit else, its the 99 octaine just use that its E5 still and protected to stay at E5

Ye it's a stealth tax. Lower mpg = topping up more often = more tax. They tax the volume, which increases as more is required to do the same job.

It includes information that I've never seen mentioned which is what inspired me to add to the topic. Seems to have helped a lot of people get a better understanding. Project Farm made a video recently taking a look at corrosive effects on materials.

A brand new car off the forecourt should be compatible for flex fuels, but without checking each I'd only be making an assumption. But given how much warranty claims could cost, it should be in the manufacturers interest to ensure flex fuel compatibility for all vehicles. Years ago when it was less common, there was less of a need, which has resulted in the many conversations around potential issues with older cars.
