HP Umpire Jeremie Rehak ejected Pirates 2B Ji Hwan Bae for arguing a strike one call during a 6th inning plate appearance vs San Diego. Bae's strike zone top is curiously lower than just about everyone else in baseball, though he isn't especially short. Hmm... Report: www.closecalls...

The amount of people in this comment section toasting Rehak (or umpires) for a margin of error pitch that don’t know what that means… the MOE isn’t there just to give umpires wiggle room. The MOE means that even this computer doesn’t “know” if that pitch is a ball or a strike… that’s how “close” this pitch is. When the computer isn’t accurate enough to get this pitch correct 100% of the time and you find yourself complaining about it, maybe it’s you who’s soft AF.
@kristopherwagner4173

What the hell are you even saying? The computer doesn’t know? The exact numbers are calculated every pitch. It’s called a margin of error because of human error, not that the computer just randomly not accurate. Please be smarter

he has a temper, he was already suspended for 30 games in the minor league system for violating the pirates domestic abuse policy when he beat his girlfriend or wife near to death and sent her to the critical care unit. Pirates fans even wanted him to get dropped but they covered it up since he is and always will be a nobody, so he dodged the bullet.
@ray-raylee9397
@ray-raylee9397 Год назад
Uhh, you may need to get your facts straight in this case. The incident in question was with his ex-gf when he was still a teenager. He never beat her "near to death," nor did he send her to the critical care unit. She did not go to the hospital. Everything was reported after the fact when she posted on her Instagram account. What he did was inexcusable and you never, ever condone something like that, but you also don't exaggerate and try to make the story worse than it is. Bae went back to Korea, cooperated fully with authorities, paid the fine the court levied against him and completed a treatment program once he came back to the states. His teammates and coaches have stated he has been nothing but a positive influence in the clubhouse throughout the minors and majors, so one can hope he's learned from the experience.
@4-Avenue
@4-Avenue Год назад
@@ray-raylee9397 ah you seem to not understand how korea ignores most womens claims of domestic abuse and think him paying a small fine justified his actions. you may need to check your facts and get it straight in this case... yes they were 19 he did beat her near death as he kicked her down a flight of stairs and even choked her. Not only did she post it on instagram but it was on the athletic, apnews, and korean daily. i'm not exaggerating anything other than reading about how people started to call her a gold digger, said she deserved it cause she cheated on him and got harassed by people that she needed to take sleeping pills from all pain and accusations. you can't sit there and tell me you don't know how the korean law doesn't protect or believe the women in these cases cause there's youtube video's of so many cases of even foreign women that went to korea cos of kpop/kdrama only to end up in a bad relationship with no one that will listen to them. Heck, korean men have the highest infidelity rate among any other asian culture
@ray-raylee9397
@ray-raylee9397 Год назад
Yes, I've read all the articles (and follow-ups) in the Athletic, AP, ESPN, Yonhap, Joong-ang Daily, etc. that came out following her initial Instagram post. None of them state there were anywhere near fatal injuries (and these would’ve been very different charges had they been), and none of them also say anything about her being rushed to the ER/critical care unit as she never went to the hospital. The incident happened when they were both 18. I am Korean, so I know full well about how these types of cases are shoved under the rug in the country. It was rare that this was even reported and settled in court, and that's even reflected in the punishment he was given (the fine). There is a huge gap in terms of how these cases are handled in the US vs. a country like Korea, and that's another nuance in this case here. The big win in this situation is that she had the bravery to come forward and press charges, Bae went back and fully cooperated with authorities, and justice was served. In follow-up reporting, it was found Bae gave her additional money, which she then donated to domestic abuse organizations. Also, there are at least steps in the right direction in that Korea's government has already proposed/implemented harsher punishment for domestic abuse/stalking cases (prior to current President Yoon's administration). Again - regardless of the circumstances (e.g., their relationship, accusations of her infidelity, etc.), what he did was wrong, inexcusable and something no one should ever resort to. Never condone, never forget...but the biggest thing is learning from your mistakes, because everyone makes them. And it seems he has when you read what his teammates/coaches/management (and he himself) have/has said about the experience since then.

I strongly disagree. They are an incredible helpful tool to bring new fans into the game, who don't know anything about baseball. What needs to happen is for players, coaches and commentators to have a better understanding of the rules, handling (what will get me/someone ejected) and how the broadcast system operates. But good luck with that, we recently saw how some teams still don't understand RLI. Not the box itself is the problem, but the lack of transparency by the league and the lack of understanding by the teams and personnel.

@josephgravina9834 Год назад
@@philricke8372 the computer is calculated on batter’s measured height (regardless of how their stance changes things). Umpires are supposed to take the perspective of the batter as the start to address the pitch. Think of that as the point that their initial stride to the ball has just hit the ground and their hips have just begun turning (bat has barely moved). Umpires do adjust based on observations of the ball as it passes by the batter. However I find it easier to adjust the high pitch on taller hitter’s rather than the low pitch. Since you are looking “down” at the ball, height is harder the judge… often the way the catcher receives a lower pitch will influence the umpire more than actual relative height

What is needed is a sense of accountability for the umpires. with the current rules in place there is effectively zero accountability for egregious or repeatedly missed calls. this needs to change, not just for the sake of the MLB, but for all of professional baseball. as it stands now there is very very little chance of any umpire from the minor leagues advancing to the majors, since the only way in is when an MLB umpire retires. with very little chance of advancement there is also very little incentive for umpires to pursue a career for any length of time. implementing a robo stike/ball system will fix (mostly) the issues with blown calls, however that will just make it even more difficult for up and coming umpires to make it to the major league, and also embolden any "rouge" umpires to continue their suspect behavior (i think we can ALL name those individuals).

I can’t tell what he said and if it was English but it didn’t sound personal and I didn’t see any gestures that were obvious to everyone in stadium that would say he was showing-up the umpire. The margin of error “correctness” isn’t just to give the umpires wiggle room, it’s because that’s how accurate the machine is. When they expected “ball” but give him a correct call on a strike, it’s because it could very well have been a strike and the machine miscalculated the pitch location. When the machine isn’t even sure it’s too close to bitch like that and way too close for you to say he “blew it”

I'm curious how many Korean viewers will find this video through the benefit of "배지환 퇴장"(Ji Hawn Bae ejected) in the video title. This series is getting a faire share of attention in Korea because of the two Korean big leaguers playing (Bae with Pirates and Ha Seong Kim with Padres).

What Bae did is no different than drawing an imaginary line on the ground. It's very likely that a player will get ejected for doing that. Referencing earlier calls probably didn't make it any better.

This is why baseball umpires are so soft. This is the equivalent of an nfl official ejecting a receiver for showing where a DB grabbed his jersey. Come on. Ridiculous ejection if it’s for that only
@1969EType
@1969EType Год назад
@@uwsbus So, how much abuse should an umpire have to take about their judgement before they eject a player? Seriously…how much abuse? Anything short of profanity? Two profanities? Four? If an umpire takes everything from players and coaches and doesn’t eject anyone, do you come on here and call them hard? What an umpire permits, they promote. No umpire ever drives home from a game and thinks, “Man, I shouldn’t have thrown that guy out…” Eject early and often!
@uwsbus
@uwsbus Год назад
@@1969EType I can tell you that slightly pointing to the location of the pitch is not “abuse” in itself. Again I don’t know what he said so I’ll give Rehak the benefit of the doubt on that but no way a slight hand gesture pointing down warrants an ejection if that’s the rationale for it.

Can someone tell me how the strike zone measurements are determined? It's it height, stance? I am clueless
@theredarmy4884
@theredarmy4884 Год назад
This is how it works for MLB - *In Major League Baseball, the top of the strike zone is the midpoint between the top of the batter's shoulders and the top of the uniform pants, and the bottom of the strike zone is at the hollow beneath the kneecap, both determined from the batter's stance as the batter is prepared to swing at the pitched ball.* Generally it's the middle of your knees and the middle of your torso
@garygemmell3488
@garygemmell3488 Год назад
The top is supposed to be a the midline between the shoulders and waist and the bottom is the hollow of the knee and is determined when the batter takes a stance in preparation to swing at a pitched ball. If you remember that little bit of video concerning that kid at the Little League World Series, his strike zone will be determined by that stance only if he uses that stance to swing at a pitched ball.
@notarealname6347
@notarealname6347 Год назад
The strike zone sits 18 inches off the plate and is 20 inches wide by 26 inches tall, with a depth being the exact same as home plate. It’s a fixed position. What’s happening here, and Pittsburgh isn’t the only club doing this, is the home broadcast is blatantly shrinking the strike zone when the home team is up to bat and bloating it when it’s the visiting team’s turn. What the home team is attempting to do is cause the computer to falsely report an error against the home plate umpire and, in turn, hope that causes the umpire to be graded poorly. However, MLB knows this and uses a completely different program to grade the umpires. Considering that MLB’s system uses CCTV & radar to measure pitches, you can easily tell when the graphical zone is being manipulated compared to the numbers that the MLB uses from their analytics.

In order for it to be a useful tool, the video strike zone needs to be adjusted for each player's dimensions. I don't see that professionally being done, and it often results in ridiculously low upper zone limits, such as Bae's, which was only slightly above his waist. Viewers are being deceived by these erroneous strike zone images.

The incomprehensible sense of authority of umpire is the same in the US and Korea. And I also don't understand notion of not complaining just because someone is a rookie. I believe it is certainly action and passion that would have helped in the challanging journey of being an MLB.
