In this episode of TrackTalk, John sits down with legendary studio drummer Gary Mallaber for a deep dive into Steve Miller's iconic track "Fly Like An Eagle" from the same album. Gary gives great insight into the recording of "Fly Like An Eagle" and how sessions produced the material for Steve Miller's hugely successful follow-up, "Book Of Dreams."
Gary also gets into the drums and cymbals he used to make those iconic records, and much more!

I was just hanging out with Gary‘s cousin, John, at a wedding this past weekend. He was telling me that Gary is playing with Jim Croce‘s son, and they will be in Buffalo I believe in early January! Suffice it to say, I will be there, front and center!

As we can hear from the live footage where Steve Miller said that they will play Fly like an eagle that is not recorded yet the whole song in the studio became something else...and better I think

I was gigging steady with Mick Hayes here in Buffalo back around '09. Mick hired Gary for some thing's who was in Buffalo for awhile. He hired him for a gig, Gary used my drums. In-between set's I told him my father (who was a Big Band Drummer at the time) my dad would take me to the new locally owned record store Record Theatre. Fly Like An Eagle was on over the sound system in the store! My dad and I called that beat- "The Slinky Groove" Thank's so much for the inspiration Gary .....

Gary is one of my main drumming influences. He has covered a lot of ground and is a great creator of unique drum intros. A solid creative and imaginative guy. What a great spirit. Thanks John for your great YT channel. This is such a great pleasure to see all of our drum heroes talking with you about their experiences with other legendary musicians. Cheers

I got the idea to que Steve Miller Band essentials on Apple Music so I could select and play each track as you gentlemen discussed them. It really put me closer to the discussion and gave a clearer understanding of what Gary was explaining. Very cool 😎

Mr Mallaber - my first drumming over 40 years ago was attempting to stay with you on the songs. Thank you John for these interviews for drummers. Bass drum - double pedal? I think Gary was the first to put that China cymbal in a popular song like that.
@livefrommydrumroom
@livefrommydrumroom Год назад
It was a single bass drum - years before double pedals. Yes I believe he was the first to incorporate a swish (Chinese effects cymbal) in pop songs in 1976. My pal Charlie Watts started using one in 1978 on “Some Girls.” Thanks for watching! 🙏❤️

Some of the best rock and roll drums I've ever heard. Those EV Re 20s mics are way off the toms. They had a huge sound in the mix.

Listening to podcast now. Not sure if he mentions this but on the original version theres an odd edit (I think) if you listen closely the ride cymbal groove kind of gets messed up for a micro second it almost is like an extra 32 note time wise throws the groove off for a brief moment. Very subtle glitch. Thanks John. Loving all the track talk stuff. David

Love his drumming on this song. I'm not a drummer so maybe one of you can offer your opinion here, but does his timing change after the first chorus on the song? It seems the tempo picks up slightly after the first chorus, and certainly by the third.
