That framing is crazy. Somehow, even though he is a pro ballplayer, it seems like no one ever explained to him how and why it's done.
@ednovy4925
@ednovy4925 Год назад
Dude, you are 100% correct!! I see it at all levels, it's crazy! Doing that does not change our minds. I'm tracking the ball all the way into the glove, making my decision and announcing it. On a borderline pitch - like the one shown - I will admit I might miss it simply because when the catcher brings it from the bottom to the top of the zone, he convinces me it's low!! LOL! Whether it's 10u, 15u, 18u, HS or NCAA, I must tell catchers 50 times every year to stop framing like that. Everyone sees it, everyone thinks the catcher believes it's not a strike. Most I get strikes, some I don't. These "travel" or "club" teams teach this way beyond what is needed. Catching it with a slight glove movement will get you 100x the calls than this crap will.

Pulled a couple inside pitches up, but not into the strike zone. Was really confused at what I was looking at, but I guess it makes sense if coaches are teaching this at all levels and not explaining it.

STOP calling it framing , ITS NOT framing.
@rayray4192

@@trevoravery9270it’s not framing at all, and it’s telling the umpire I believe you are so stupid you will fall for my little trick. I call the pitch a ball because you told me you don’t think it was a strike when you gloved the pitch.

It pisses me off. I always told my players. Stick the glove where you catch it. We are are presenting the pitch not trying to trick them. I’d also get pissed at my players when they’d hold the glove too long. Like catch it and hold for maybe half a second to a second at the absolute most then throw it back.

Moving your glove 6 or more inches after you've caught it isn't framing; it's just the catcher trying to get the ump to call strike on a pitch the catcher knows is a ball. You want borderline calls? Don't move your glove much.

What are catchers being taught these days? Yanking a mitt into the stratosphere is not going make a ump double guess themselves.
@dereksimmons5877
@dereksimmons5877 Год назад
I think there might be something psychologically effective about pulling the pitch to the top of the zone on low pitches. It's a different mechanism than framing. Like maybe "if I can get it that high in X amount of time with as little as Y movement then surly it wasn't too low to start". Would be interesting to analyze low pitches within tenths of inches to see which catcher motion yields more favorable results.

The problem is that they've moving the glove a foot off the original spot. That's ridiculous. As an observer, it drives me nuts to see that pitch after pitch. Couldn't they be subtle about it?

I don’t understand who is teaching catchers to frame that way, or why they think it’s fooling anyone. When did that extreme herky jerky framing start? They’re watching balls and strikes on the tablets, but not their poor framing?

The framing is egregious however the reason Snyder was mad because there were two almost identical pitches, both framed exactly the same, one called a ball and one called a strike.

I feel like that gets into too much interpretation of intent and isn't really a problem. When a pitcher misses a spot badly, that could get misinterpreted, for instance. Catchers can receive how they want within the rules, and that shouldn't affect the umpire's judgement.

Still don't think it is appropriate for ump to listen in on mound visit. Walk up announce "OKAY WRAP IT UP " and that is it. Next they will mic dressing rooms to see if they players say anything about them after the game .

when its the umpires job to go out to the mound to break up a conference and the classy coach talks loud enough to ridicule him, then thats what happens. My suggestion for MLB is to just use the clock to break it up and if they don't assess a ball to the batter
@Math.Bandit
@Math.Bandit Год назад
I think you might be misunderstanding. The pitching coach here (as in the Jays example) is relying on the ump 'listening in' since he isn't even talking to his pitcher and is talking directly to the ump.

If the ump can't make the call through the zone and has to make it based on the catcher's glove positioning then that is on the ump. Who cares what the catcher is doing because for arguments sake lets say the catcher isn't there, am I supposed to believe that umps couldn't call a game because they base some of their calls on the catchers glove positioning. They are professionally paid full time umps and should be able to get calls right regardless of the catcher.
@ednovy4925
@ednovy4925 Год назад
Agree, but see my comment above. No one is 100% perfect. We're all human. If a pitch is a strike by 1mm or 1/8", and the catcher moves his glove 2' - guess what?? He's telling me he doesn't think that's a strike!! That close we sometimes get fooled. If he simply catches it and holds his glove for a split second, we umpires process it better. Regardless of the level, it's human nature. You cannot dump on the umpire for a pitch that might be 1/8" in the zone and the catcher does that!! All the catcher's fault here
@Unusual116
@Unusual116 Год назад
@@ednovy4925 Completely disagree that it is the catchers fault, it is not. The ump should not base his call on what he thinks the catcher wants him to think, that's ridiculous. The job is to call balls and strikes over the plate not call where the ball finishes, catchers mitt should not matter in the call at all.
@mptr1783
@mptr1783 Год назад
@@Unusual116 so what makes you think the the catcher moving the glove is influencing the umpire lol? I say it hurts the catcher and pitcher when a glove is moved that much.....hes telling the umpire he doesnt believe its a strike either
@Unusual116
@Unusual116 Год назад
@@mptr1783 Umps should not be making calls based on what they think the catcher wants them to think, that is ridiculous. Make the call where the call is over the plate and if they umps can't do it then change the system (ABS or challenge system or both). Umps ruining ABs and sometimes games (see PHI vs MIN today bases loaded, full count) needs to stop. There is not real time accountability for balls and strikes from umps unlike basically every other sport where there are robust replay systems to hold officials accountable in real time.
@rickhaavisto9023
@rickhaavisto9023 Год назад
@@Unusual116Name a sport where ALL aspects of a play can be reviewed? In football, if a ref is wrong on false start/NZI, that isn’t reviewable. No fouls are reviewable in NBA and last touch isn’t reviewable until the final minutes. NHL has some review process for certain penalties, but not all of them.
