You should make a suspension kit for the ORV chassis that widens and extends the suspension travel to help all models' handling.
@AMPROEngineering
@AMPROEngineering 3 года назад
The hard part about making it wider is that you would need different axles. I mean it is all doable but its another expense on something already expensive. I do like the idea a lot given that the narrow track is the reason for limited travel. may be a future project.
@davidkline4372
@davidkline4372 3 года назад
@@AMPROEngineering could you find a longer axle from a different model or even brand that would fit in the diff output drives. The hub carrier could be any diameter then and you could use the bearings from that model or brand... Just a thought...

every successful inventor was once called a mad man at one time or another the difference is the ability to learn from ones mistakes. love the stronger stock parts you're building, not too sure about taking a nostalgic blackfoot and turning it into a blackfoot extreme. i have both and enjoy them differently, keep it up all good stuff, ordered some lunchbox parts.

The trailing arms are... or I'll say I consider them... a really important part of the ORV. I'd be really interested in improvements to the old trailing arm system.

You are totally correct. The crappiness (that a word?) is part of the charm. However, this is a car that never reached it potential even with all of the hundreds of hop up options available back in the day.

I'm not sure about the rear hubs. I believe that you should rise up the upper arm mount on the rear hubs. It seems that the lower arms and the upper arms are not parallel. Cheers. Kontemax
@AMPROEngineering

They are parallel. The angle is screwing up the appearance of that because the the mounts are offset. It shows better here installed now: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OgNYXIKbrSM.html

Replied to your other post but ill paste it in: I know i'm going to get in trouble for this one. Yes and No. Yes if your goal is for increased efficiency and run time and you set the end points way back to reduce speed/acceleration then yes. If you want to just go fast, no. The diff can not handle that. Even with braces, the cheap aluminum diff gears will tear them selves apart. On top of that, the counter gear is way too thin. All my opinions though. I am working on a diff (long shot) that will solve, not patch, the diff issue but the trans was never designed with modern power systems in mind. Hope that helps.

doing the arms in parallel/same length is the wrong idea. You want some camber gain when the suspension is compressed, therefor have a shorter / angled upper link. moving the inner pivot point of the upper link lower and outside is what you want... just need to know how much.
@AMPROEngineering
@AMPROEngineering 7 лет назад
Well wrong in terms of a good car. We are talking about a Blackfoot here. I originally had the rear end very different and the consensus from the Tamiya community was to keep the rear wheel vertical to keep more in line with the original trailing arm. I do make an upright that gives the rear end camber gain but no one seems to want it. I try to make simple vintage RC's stay as simple as I can...despite how not simple this one has become...hmmm. I also thought the proper camber gain would be wanted but it seems the majority wanted it to look more stock under load than anything. Thank you for your comment. These always help to clarify why I do what I do.

Looks nice! I just ordered some Lunchbox parts, looking forward to those. Have you had any diff problems with the original Blackfoot or Monster Beetle? Seems people even running the stock 540 are blowing diffs pretty regularly. Been looking for a good reinforcement solution for that.
@AMPROEngineering
@AMPROEngineering 8 лет назад
I have but not often. I had the diff on my Brat fail a couple years ago. I rebuilt it and now its fine. The Monster beetle I have is starting to make noise but those gears are original to that truck which is an original release. I have a plan to support the sides but there is something else I am cooking up that may make the diff issue a thing of the past.
@frankiechow39
@frankiechow39 7 лет назад
Please go to 8:45, you said that you are going to release a brace between the gearbox and the original mounting points that originally holds the trailing arm, when will it happen??
@AMPROEngineering
@AMPROEngineering 7 лет назад
This came out with the rear double wishbone rear end. There is a brace that locks the trans to the chassis via battery door. I was not able to get adequate structural support using the trailing arm mount. Take a look at episode 35 for the installation as well as seeing the brace.
@frankiechow39
@frankiechow39 7 лет назад
Assume your double wishbone suspension has installed. Can I use the brace from the King Blackfoot put between the transmission and those mounting points for the frog?? I have no experience with King Blackfoot at all.
@AMPROEngineering
@AMPROEngineering 7 лет назад
No, the KBF uses the same brace as the BF. I think it is just locked closed. I have done no testing with the stock one at all so I cannot say that it will work.
@frankiechow39
@frankiechow39 7 лет назад
Refer to Tamiya 58110 Super Blackfoot manual, the part is indicated as D3 and D4 of part D. tamiyaweb.com/manuals/download
@AMPROEngineering
@AMPROEngineering 7 лет назад
That is the same as the King Blackfoot. The design I created will not benefit from that part. It needs to have the battery door locked shut on the bottom and to have the tension of an impact (it is pulling the door under load) redistributed to the front of the chassis to eliminate stress on the trans mounts. All the advice I can offer is that I have not tested those parts on the car. Great site you linked me to. I did not know that existed.
@WhoKnowsWho2
@WhoKnowsWho2 8 лет назад
How long do you think until you have the diff solution for the MB? I'm trying to order some reinforcement plates from a guy in the UK right now but haven't gotten a reply.
@AMPROEngineering
@AMPROEngineering 8 лет назад
Man, that's a good question. I will know within a month or so. If that does not pan out I am making braces for this trans kit.

@AMPROEngineering
@AMPROEngineering 2 года назад
Did you want to try adding vertical shock to the trailing arms? I suspect they will bind as the wheel hub area of the trailing arm travels in an arc. If you just want to install it until the other bits come in, sadly I can't answer that. I never tried it bit it stands to reason that it should clear everything.

I enjoyed watching this video and I like how you seem to put a lot of thoughts into details. I think we're on the same page with regards to trying to improve things and make them work better. The bumpsteer was always the greatest let-down of the King Blackfoot in my opinion. Shocks and tires are aweful as well... I didn't get to the tires yet but I did replace all 4 shocks with Savage X shocks and completely redesigned the steering altogether. Check it out and tell me what you think.
