In this video I will show you how to remove and replace the windshield in your #e39 #m5 . The techniques used in this video will apply to multiple other cars and platforms.
The original windshield in my E39 M5 had seen better days in its 20 years of service. It suffered from severe pitting and sand damage. It was getting very difficult to see out of, so it was finally time to replace it. My car was originally equipped with a PN# 51318259316 windshield (standard glass with rain sensor). I took this opportunity to upgrade my windshield to the Climate Comfort glass. The climate comfort or also referred to as “Infrared Windshield” is PN# 51318259324. You can spot these as they have a purple hue to them in some light when viewed outside of the car. They are a direct replacement to the original glass. Since my car has the extended leather package and therefore a leather dash, I wanted the climate comfort windshield to help keep the heat and UV rays off my dash. I want to preserve that leather for as long as I can. Most all of us M5 owners are aware of the issues with the leather lifting off the dash.
I will cover the steps that you need to take to remove and replace the windshield in your car. The techniques that I am covering in this video will apply to essentially every modern car and glass. I will show you how to cut the glass out without damaging or breaking it. I will cover the needed steps to prep the body of the car, and the car for the new glass, in addition I will show you the steps that I take to complete the installation of the new glass and windshield seal.
