We are back (hopefully!). Today the boys sit down to discuss where we have been and going-ons, the (apparently fascist) history of "organic farming," as well as laying out a critique of optimism (and not of Voltaire's species of critique, mind you!)

I love the convo you both had at the end about suffering. I think this is a common thing people miss in the spiritual life. What they think is that God is someone who is supposed to fix what makes them suffer. He is, but not in the way people think. God is not there to fix the external conditions, even though sometimes he permits this. God is there to change you internally, and that changes you perception of the suffering. The thing people misunderstand is that if this inner part that can be made to see everything as paradise is off, it wouldnt matter if someone dropped a trillion dollars on your doorstep or gave you all your desires in your life, it would honestly make you worse in whatever despair you felt. But if this switch internally can be cut on, then you can be sleeping on Skid Row and feel more happy than a billionaire. This is why political solutions in respect really have little to do with the spiritual life. All they are is a band aid to a deeper wound on our society. Spiritual sight is double sight in a way. Its a way you seeing with the knowledge of good and evil while at the same time seeing the world in the naivety of a small child. So yes in a sense the true spiritual person is a pessimist, but also an optimist. The truly spiritual person does not actually care if things get better or even is that much aware that things have gone bad, in an external sense. He accepts all as from God and the will of God. Its not about Jesus coming back to destory all the wicked degenerates, its about destroying the wicked attatchments in ME. and then experiencing Golgotha in experiental sense.
