Ever try flaked feed corn for a whiskey mash? I found some available local to me for 12$ for 35 lbs. curious on how well if would work vs cracked feed corn
It's been my experience that for distilling you need a glass jar for your hydrometer and a stainless steel siphon or just use a silicone hose as a siphon. For me plastic things tend to disinagrate after using then on high proof alcohol.
@@stillworksandbrewing thanks Man. I heard that in the video right after I left the comment. My stuff is homemade, but it works so far. I’ll check Mile High.
Hey Randy love your videos! Looking to get into home distilling myself. I really like MGP 95/5 ryes. Have you ever tried a high rye mash bill? And we only use pure cane sugar here. I'd be curious if that'd have an effect on the taste?? I have a pellet smoker too and am curious if you charred/toasted and smoked some oak what flavor that'd give
@@Suzukidave Hey Dave. What size column? I run an all copper (non modular "tree") 3 inch x5 sieve plates and a stainless 4 inch x3 bubble cap plates. (Modular so I can run 1 or 3) But my thumper is "still" my favorite - 15.5 gal boiler and 15.5 gal thumper.
Branden Ward I hear what you are saying but I think that 8 Gallon is the best size because I make 6 gallon mash that leaves you some head room it works out real well cheers
Hi Branden. About the smallest QUALITY still you will find is the " Mighty Mini " from Mile Hi Distilling. It is an absolutely fantastic still to get started with. However, as Randy and David mentioned, the 8 gallon is probably the best size if you want to do six gallon batches. The fermentation time is roughly the same from 3 gallon to 6 gallon batches, but you will have to run a three gallon still twice, which is more work and takes more time that running an 8 gallon still once. Another advantage to the 8 gallon is that the column is taller and the pre - condenser is larger, which with proper column packing should result in a higher proof spirit coming off the still running in reflux mode. ( for vodka or fuel alcohol ) Cheap Chinese stills are pretty much just that. Will they work ? yup, they will. However, if you buy quality the first time, even a three gallon, and you need to sell it, you shouldn't have any trouble. Look at Brew Haus or Mile Hi for good quality, they are both stainless and made in America. Best wishes, -- den PS. Feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions such as heating, etc
@@stillworksandbrewing Thank you my friend. I think it is very important to get off on the right foot with good equipment no matter what you are doing. Initial failure will bring nothing but frustration upon someone with little to no experience. Better to spend 5 minutes listening to others with loads of knowledge than to try to reinvent the wheel yourself. As always, thank you for another good video and for allowing me to add my two cents on occasion. -- den PS. Merry Christmas to you and yours !!!
