1B Umpire Lance Barksdale ejected Rockies manager Bud Black for arguing a check swing ball call during Teoscar Hernández's 9th inning at-bat as the Dodgers scored 7 runs in the 9th to come from behind & defeat Colorado. A swinging strike would have ended the game. Report: www.closecallsports.com/2024/...

Id like to have a more objective standard. The college rule seems decent. It looked like he swung, but the Rockies cant let that call be that important and need to close them out.
@Leafsdude
@Leafsdude Месяц назад
The problem with such rules is, for example, hitters trying to avoid a HBP and the bat passing the hip in the process. Right now, the rule allows the ump to judge that not an attempt to strike at the ball. College standard, and correct me if I'm wrong, wouldn't allow for that leeway.

Seems silly to say that the Rockies can't let that call be important. If the umps give extra strikes, it will be impossible to win a game. Strike three is pretty darn important and when strike 3 that would have ended the game is missed, regardless of what lead up to that point, that is an enormously important call, no matter how much you want to downplay it.

Seeing the replay I'd say swing, but I don't think it was so clear even that way to really fault an umpire. There have been way worse check swing calls than that. If this was middle of the 4th no one really even blinks an eye at the call

The fact that you’ve got people in these comments that have it confidently both ways, with replays to help, tells me this was just a close one. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for getting the call right, but one thing I think gets lost sometime in the age of replay is that some calls are just right on the line. Baseball has fewer of these than some sports; was that a block or a charge in basketball is a great one. Sometimes it’s genuinely 50-50 and you gotta pick one.

The NCAA's half swing rule could stop a lot of these arguments. Instead, MLB has arguments and ejections because OBR doesn't want to define a half swing. I think no matter what happens in this situation, there's going to be an argument. Hopefully this will be addressed in the 2025 rulebook.

The fact that the first base umpire told the Rockies players after the game that it "wasn't even close" tells you that he had an agenda. You can argue about whether he swung or not. It is laughable to claim that it wasn't even close.
@GregMcNeish
@GregMcNeish Месяц назад
Real-time I didn't have a swing. My read on the body language was that he'd pulled up on the swing attempt before the hands came through. Sure, the bat carved a path to the middle of the zone, but that's not the rule.
@whodoyoudancefor
@whodoyoudancefor Месяц назад
That shot from center field at 1:46 looked like he didn't come close to going around. The side angle showed a borderline call either way. Can't remember the last time I saw one that looked so different from different angles. But the clear solution is simply to call almost all checked swings as being successful. A strike is when the batter attempts to strike the ball. Any batter attempting to hold up is very clearly not attempting to strike the ball. QED.
@babababad
@babababad Месяц назад
@@whodoyoudancefor there's a reason that "attempting to hold up" is not the standard. The batter is usually going to recognize that the ball is out of the zone at some point by the time it reaches the catcher. If the bat is still moving forward by the time the ball reaches the plate (as is the case here), or if the batter brings the bat around to an angle sufficient that contact would put the ball in play, even softly (as is the case here), the batter hasn't really registered that it's out of the zone until far too late. If the batter only had to "attempt to hold up", he could start to pull back at any point in the swing, even with the ball fully past the plate, and earn a ball call.
@rayray4192
@rayray4192 Месяц назад

@whodoyoudancefor
@whodoyoudancefor Месяц назад
@@babababad Correct on all counts - and that's why it's great! Three true outcomes is worse than the baseball I grew up with, and forcing the pitcher to throw more balls over the plate by making it much easier for the batter to hold up is a feature, not a downside. And we can do it by simply following the rules as they already exist! The only reason I said "almost" above is that like you point out, sometimes the batter starts to check his swing when the ball has already passed. But IMHO every other attempt to check a swing should be a definitive indication that the batter is no longer attempting to strike at the ball.

I can't think of a good rule for check swings that is 100% objective. Angle of the bat, position of any part of the bat relative to the plate, position of any part of the bat relative to the batter's body, etc., all seem imperfect-batters will just develop a technique to technically avoid the forbidden motion even when they have sufficiently committed to swinging. And no ump would be able to see well enough to apply those standards very accurately. Just asking the umpire with the best view: "Do you think the batter tried to hit the ball?" is fine IMO. The way to make it perfect would be to allow managers to use a challenge, even though it's a judgement call. Let the replay umps watch various angles in slow motion and make a judgement call of their own based on the full picture.

So much to unpack here: - I have never seen that Jeopardy clip, and really want to, but I can't find it. Any help out there? (EDIT: found it--didn't realize it was from Cheers) - I love the specific examples in the rulebook. "Even if they claim 'dust in their eyes,' 'steamed glasses,' 'didn't get the sign'...". Clearly all three of those have been used before. - That Mexican Baseball League clip wasn't an example of a "worse call." It was an example of a "corrupt call." That's just changing the rules in the moment to benefit one team.

Oh I bet the game itself was rigged as in it teetered from COL favor to LAD with one swing of the bat in the 9th

If you're an umpire at any level and think he made the right call. It would be best if you quit, get your eyes examined, and get a psych eval done. I see an MLB investigation in Lance's future.

An investigation? Seriously? I think it was a strike too, but there is no objective standard, and it was no where near as bad as people are making it out to be. Talk about overreacting....

Looking at it in real time (like the umpire had to), it did NOT look like a swing at all. Slo-mo showed it to probably be a 50/50 call (meaning that it could have gone either way); but remember, the umpire does not have the luxury of slo-mo, he ONLY sees it in real time.

@@jeremygoldenberg9617 The Ruf swing during the Dodgers/Giants game a couple of years ago was way more obvious than this one for sure, and the umpire absolutely f'd that one up badly and ultimately cost the Dodgers first place in the division to the Giants because of that loss.

@@jeremygoldenberg9617 if one is gambling on games I'm sure others are as well. Wouldn't surprise me that Barksdale would be the one to get caught.
