John’s guest is drummer, producer, songwriter, and original drummer for "Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers," Stan Lynch. Stan discussed reuniting with his longtime friend and Heartbreakers bandmate, guitarist extraordinaire Mike Campbell, and his recent tour with Mike’s band, "The Dirty Knobs.” Stan shared some stories from the road, and how it felt to be touring and playing with Mike again after 30 years. John and Stan did a deep dive into tempos, playing comfortably and the importance of songs having a natural pulse. Stan talked about joining Dixon Drums and using them on tour, about his other projects, “The Speaker Wars” and “The Chefs” and much more!

Stan Lynch is the best. He's extremely underrated-and listening to those Heartbreaker records with him is just glorious. Fantastic drummer!

I certainly miss Tom and the original Heartbreakers. They made amazing music. I’m still upset that Tom didn’t take care of his self properly. Stan played so well on the albums he contributed to. I love his self depreciating humor.

Stan is such a great drummer, his part in the Heartbreakers is undeniable. The Heartbreakers post Stan are a very different band. I prefer the Lynch years, bravo Stan!!

Same here : Stan had that special feel, that not a lot of drummers have.

My wife and I were playing the game of “If you could have dinner with anyone in the world who would it be?” I picked Stan Lynch. Iconic feel, sound, and contribution to the songs…as well as having the spine to hold his own against someone like Iovine. What a great run you’ve had. Thank you for helping me solve the mystery of the drum kit as a kid trying to figure it all out. My best to you.

Great interview! I love this guy. So insightful and humble about everything. I found myself laughing throughout as well. Very funny man. I just about lost it when he told Iovine "there's a glass over there, I think you're supposed to be behind it". 😂😂

Thanks for the interview with Stan Lynch! Stan, you've always been one of my favorite drummers, I saw you live back in the late seventies when I was in high school and as an undergrad in the early eighties. You played with authoritative joy on stage!

John, you & I must be the same age. I started playing around 1968. Joined my first band in 1979, played until 2004. After all this time away from the drums I have found that I am a much better listener than I ever was. I recently got back into practicing and found that I am a much more solid time keeper and play more tasteful now. There must be something to this maturity thing. I always enjoy you videos!

Thanks Mike! I agree - we become better listeners and team players as we mature. I can't play singles as fast as I did when I was 25, but I think I'm a more rounded and better drummer today. 👍✌

I think Stan is a much better drummer than he believes he is. That's a beautiful quality to have. Astonishing really, when you think about how he consistently lays it down. If he is as he says, a "band drummer", he's right up there with Charlie, Ringo, Bonzo, Simon Kirke, Kenny Jones, Levon Helm, et al. Thanks for a great conversation. ☮

I think Stan was berated so much during his time with the Heartbreakers by people like Iovine and evenTom on his drumming..

@@BeMused79 The Heartbreakers seemed like a band of brothers so it would make sense that they found someone in Stan that they could pick on! Plus, early on it was hard for Stan to get a good sound from his drums. He just didn't seem wired that way. He certainly learned over time and he has such a great pocket. As we all know, things definitely came to a head during the Dylan tour in Australia and I wouldn't have blamed Stan if he had quit right then and there.

Speaking of Psychotic Reaction which Stan was terrific in, wonder if he ever met the original drummer for the Count Five, Butch Atkinson? The band was a one hit wonder garage band. Butch later became a Navy pilot and then a pilot for Delta Air Lines. Unfortunately he passed away in the late '90's from an illness.
