With a name so thoroughly unmemorable I had to Google it twice during a conversation once, and that EA did nothing to market as a single player game at a time where people could, understandably, look at a game like this and go "Oh, they're trying to do some sort of Destiny clone. Pass."

That's too brief of an explanation. Different genres, could have sold better later on if just the timing were poor. It's more likely there was never much an interest in the concept, as in a shooter game with blindingly bright magic. EA's attitude towards overspending on projects has been known for some time. Danerade made a 3 hour video about Plants Vs. Zombies downfall after their studio, Popcap, was acquired by EA. One of the former developers, Stephen Notley, said that EA would rather have a project that spent $90 million and made $100 million than one that cost $2mil and made $15mil, even though the ROI was far better on the smaller game - "they were like a baseball team that only wanted home runs". EA seems to have believed they can just dump money into studios, regardless of context.

Immortals of Avium was talked about a little bit in the GPU news/enthusiast scene, because of the ridiculous system requirements. Also, people were talking about how the graphics and visuals in the game aren't even all that amazing to require such high system requirements. The developers also said pre-launch that they made the game with DLSS and FSR in mind, which caused many people to complain that dev studios were beginning to use upscaling as a crutch for bad optimization. Even among people who were talking about this game, very little of it was positive.

They'll learn the lessons they intended to learn. We have to just accept that big companies are quickly losing the ability to make good games. Budgets are ballooning, development cycles are somehow full of both horrifying crunch and massive delays, marketing is somehow 1/3 to 1/2 of the whole ass budget yet tuned in gamers manage to barely hear about the games until after they release and flop. Its the same trend that we see in other entertainment industries like TV and movies. Everything is more expensive, more grand, more visually groundbreaking, but the actual quality of the product continues to plummet. Existing IPs are the only things that work anymore because audiences will flock to them full of nostalgia and hope no matter how times they're disappointed, just for the chance to glimpse something of the magic they once felt when industries gave a shit about quality.

The golden years of anime, movies and music is when producers and publishers flopped 9 out of 10 ideas but handled hundreds of ideas per year, because those 1 out of 10 (or less) are what we now know as the "classics". But EA miss the boat already, because as a publisher if they invest into a project, I expect microtransactions and essentially no game play, just money and investment with a graphics. This is what we call a reputation. If Devolver Digital publish a game it is statistically likely to be good. Do they have flops? Totally. Do they try not to and properly vet their games to match their core principles - also yes. Once your reputation is destroyed, you cannot be "hey see, I can also be the good guy" and expect people to ignore previous malice.

Titanfall is in my opinion too generic and close to home. Immortals of Aveum is exactly the kind of shooter I've wanted for a long time. Not to mention it's a fresh take on the fantasy genre, which is almost always the same old medieval sword and sorcery with knights and castles.
@TheHollowBlade

@@Aewon84ok.. you and like maybe 5 other people. Hence why they are saying it was a mistake. The point is not that theres no market for games like this, but more so the fact that spending 125million on a game that flops is a very bad thing for a business. 125mil on tf3 would have at the very least landed them even. But also with apex kinda struggling currently a new titanfall game might get people excited and it would do really well.

Nah, not only. Game apparently had subpar, cheesy writing, poor performance and was also a visual effects mess. Just watch some gameplay, there are bright, colorful particles all over. I wouldn't be eager to play that even if the concept of "military shooter but with magic" resonated with me. With better marketing the game might have been bought more but not sit at a mostly or very positive on Steam but on mixed instead. This doesn't seem to be the case of a masterpiece and gem flying under the radar but a mediocre game not being able to use it's AAA power.

I'd imagine EA only paid a part of the development costs. The studio was founded in partnership with Brian Sheth, a billionaire who does a lot of video games and venture capital investing. (He actually became a minority owner of Jagex, the company that does RuneScape just last week as he's the founder and CEO of Haveli Investments.) No idea where EA spent that marketing budget at, all they got for $40 million was a few short trailers released online for Summer Game Fest and GamesCom and a few reviewers going "it's an FPS with no guns wow that's so quirky" on release week. Also, launching without monetization past initial purchase doesn't mean they couldn't have added additional monetization later had the game been successful enough to warrant continuing to work on it.

There was plenty of marketing push behind this. Revealed at The Game Awards 2022, showcased at the Playstation State of Play May 2023, shown again at the Summer Games Fest in June 2023. Got loads of ad spots. All of the biggest outlets and reviewers covered it from hands-on impressions all the way up to review embargo, from jackfrags to Gameranx to ACG to Skill Up. So I don't believe when people say "I never saw this" or "I've never heard of this". But rather it's probably more of "this was such a generic looking game and had such a difficult-to-remember name that it was wiped from our collective memories".

We need to return to the era of mid-shelf games. That PS2 and original Xbox era where publishers had a wide array of releases every year, a lot of them of smaller scope and budget. Sure, very few of them were big hits. But they didn't need to be. They didn't break the bank (Or the developers) to make, they generated revenue to be saved up for the bigger and more prestigious projects, were pretty fun for what they were, and diversified the market with more potential for experimentation and new ideas, rather than chasing trends. These days everything is either completely indie with basically no budget, or a big, epic, AAA, scoped-to-the-heavens behemoth that cost 50 bajillion dollars to make in 1 year. Both of those have their place, but we need more stuff in the middle.

40 Million on Marketing and they thought "Immortals of Aveum" would move the needle? A more honest title like "Spellgunner" would have at least told people what to expect from the game. And maybe do an actual promotional campaign so people find out the game exists before it fails?

Okay so looking at the comments EA pissed away the marketing budget, released it at a horrible time for competition, made the game way too demanding on specs, and made it ehh on how good it was. Yet the only lesson EA will learn from this is that making games single player with no microtransactions is a bad idea; ignoring all the the other issues the game has. Just wonderful anout that being the corporate lesson.

You can't just make guns and call them 'spells'. Casting spells and your typical shooter are very different fantasies and don't really go together. For a good mage experience you want something like Magika, Morrowind, or even some minecrat mods like Mana and Artifice. The people who made this game just didn't know their audience. Also I just don't buy games from EA because of their crappy launcher.
