Ethelred was too young to take part in the murder of his half-brother, but it seems that he witnessed it. His mother (who organised the assassination of her stepson) beat him with a candlestick for crying about it. This was possibly the cause of his developing borderline personality disorder. Eadric Streona was a cousin if the line of Godwin through Aethelmaer the Fat. He is said (in later accounts) to have murdered Edmund Ironside either by concealing his son in the toilet pit & jabbing him up the jacksie with a spear or by booby trapping an early crossbow to perform likewise. The story goes that Eadric was beating Cnut (a vicious bastard in his own right) at chess & Cnut got salty, demanding to change the rules (on account of his being king & all). They had arrow in which Eadric boasted he had put Cnut where he was today by killing Ironside, at which point Cnut told one of his Jarls (possibly Thorkel the Tall) to chop him with an axe & his body was cast into the marshes of the Thames.

Well looks like I gonna have comment here too . Hallo again from Denmark history time . As you Said in video about professional viking armies are true . In a decade before Ethelred the unready took the English throne . Denmark had just been unified into a single state under Harold Bluetoth around 965(also the year Harold converted to Christianity . Even though it woud take another 150 years befor Odin , Thor and the went went away). Harold was powerfull enough to make the rulers of Zealand (and the Island ) and scania(in modern sweden . That area was danish untill 1660. When Denmark lost the scanian wars with sweden ) and norway submit to his rule . Suddenly the King of Denmark coud raise huge armies . And fist recorded raid viking in ethelreds reign took place in 983. So it wasnt Svend Forkbeard Who started the viking raids in England to collect danegeld . But his father Harold Bluetoth . But in 986 Harold was overthrown and killed on Svend orders after rebillion/civil war . And Svend took the danish Crown for himself . Svend was around 26 at the time ... And some years where Svend conslidsted his rule and becoming the most powerfull ruler in Scandinavia . We still consider him of our greatest rulers here in Denmark . Thats when the raids started .in 990’es started. But Svend didnt start it . His father did ....

Do those VIKINGS have studded leather??
@Heidenspross
@Heidenspross 6 лет назад
why not?
@BranDenhauer
@BranDenhauer 6 лет назад
Heidenspross Historically inaccurate. While leather armor did exist, it was _extremely_ rare. Cloth gambesons were surprisingly effective; plus they were much cheaper to produce and the circumstances needed to turn a leather hide into armor almost never lined up. First it was so expensive that you'd basically have to own your own cattle to afford it. On top of that, cattle were very useful throughout their lives and were almost never slaughtered young, and leather from older cows doesn't make good armor. There are literally only a handful of depictions of leather armor dating from the Dark Ages through the Medieval period, while depictions of cloth and metal armor (or a combination of both) numbers in the thousands.
@BranDenhauer
@BranDenhauer 6 лет назад
@@jbussa The reason we know that cloth and metal armors were far more common than leather isn't because we've found so much more of them in archaeological digs; in fact, no cloth armor has been found for obvious reasons. No, the reason why we know is because of the wealth of historical documents and manuscripts depicting cloth and metal armor, and the severe lack of such evidence for leather armor. It existed, but simply was not common.

Then it seems that greed, disregard and disloyalty eventually decided his fate. I think Cnut himself wanted rid of this man, afraid of what he achieved from so little, and for the fact that he was ready to betray even the king who supplied him with all that power. Also, leaving him alive could have caused a great political disruption for Cnut, especially because many noblemen already hated/mistrusted him, which could have eventually developed into a civil war.

@ryanaegis3544
@ryanaegis3544 6 лет назад
How so? As I understand it William's claim to the English throne was through his great grandmother Judith, who as well as being the great granddaughter of Charlemagne and princess of Paris, was married to King Ecbert of Wessex and, after his death, to his son Aethelwulf. Of course you will remember these two West Saxon kings, as they are the Grandfather and Father of Alfred the Great, thus Judith was the stepmother of Alfred the Great, and even after she went back to Paris and married Baldwin, she still had a legal claim to the crown of Wessex, which at the time essentially meant all of England.

Any use of historic case examples, as a method of "wining" wars, and even decision-making in social actions, is entirely too complex and non-analogous to the true world, as it is. These "case examples" and/or stories may be useful to learn facts, and possibly new concepts, but applying one, or even several historical examples to a current situation, usually always has a conflict with its application. This false analogy; some past occurrence is, plainly, not exactly the same today. All people are different, all laws are different/differently interpreted (society has advanced), and all people have their autonomy. The chance that all people are going to behave exactly like a historical case example is extremely unlikely, given people's rights, and their autonomy. Thus, overall is the concept of the logical fallacy, the "false [and/or faulty] analogy" The use of fictional stories can even be more flawed, as these fictional stories may not be complete in their depiction of reality. One quality may be "attractive", but is this being, as one may say "hooked on a feeling", making decisions based on emotions instead of facts, and somewhat hedonistic, truly what is best? But if this quality, if it is action, revenge, love, (and others) even the best "feeling" to guide one's decision-making? People are self-aware. What happens when people find out, and understand sources people are making their decision from? This may be more relevant if a person is/was taking more steps towards recreating this reality, than merely playing one part. Such as truly assigning labels, and roles to other people. Still, all people are free to define themselves, or at least should be, and some more specific conversation uses references to literature and other media as a way merely to conversate about certain topics. What if people were using legal terms, and even court rooms, to recreate their favorite books? Even without completely being aware? Couldn't this be harmful? With awareness to these topics as separate works of art, and not true life. What then? As a leader, what are people truly creating? What exactly is one creating their society into? Is making decisions this way limiting other people into roles they have not chose for themselves? Should people learn, and or be explained, more specific forms of conversation? Thanks for reading.

@@TheRojo387 I think they were clearly killing him for the sake of removing an enemy, not as a "traitor" per se. Switching sides was very common thing to do in Germanic society, especially pre-christian and especially in Anglo-Saxon England. The idea of "loyalty without question" is relatively modern one that wasn't really present in most of history. Notable exceptions of course, like the Great Chingis, who would even reward loyal vassals of his enemies if they were taken alive and were willing to serve him once their Lord was dead. He understood how rare and valuable loyalty was though, which most rulers of history did not.

The land of wales was in the past was classed as nearly worthless as it was very poor for farming compared to the land that was to the east in (England) but even Wales was conquered by the Saxons over time a large part of west Wales was in the past part of mercia .in reality wales is like Northumbria that is the north of England , its western England .

Honestly man you shouldve titled this channel western history time (nothing from subsaharan or saharan africa, americas, east, mid, southern asia, anything not around the mediterainean, Persia, scandinavia or the british isles) cuz. Thats literally all thats on it lol Of course i dont seriously mind, it just continues to stick out to me thst you focus quite heavily on the.. White / european. Areas of history. And im only saying this because i cant find another way to i am *NOT* insinuating youre racist via your preference of historical tales to put in your videos. Its just that. Youre not exactly. Very broad with your history for it to be blatently called history time. Im sure theres a good reason. Seriously. Youre good at what you do these are awesome videos. But. You may wanna start putting in some diversity for the sake of your channels name

I’m one dude running this channel and I’ve only been doing this full time for a matter of months. These things take time. It takes endless weeks of solid research to make these videos and I just so happen to have already studied the topics I talk about . I’d rather not make a shallow video on a subject I don’t know a great deal about. Instead I am organically arriving at China, India, Africa and the Americas as my research and steadily growing library takes me there. I have many videos on the way on all these areas that will arrive as soon as I can make them, but again - I am one person. Not some sort of documentary making superhuman.

I find it interesting that when my ancestors left Scandinavia and settled Scotland, Normandy, and the Danelaw, the local population reacted much the same way as modern European "nationalists" react to Syrian and African refugees...and yes, my ancestors really DID come to steal the Saxon people's land and money and women! The Saxons did the same thing to Roman Britain, and the Romans did the same to the Celts, and later generations of Britons did exactly the same thing to the Native Americans. Really, pretty much all of history consists of people from one country travelling to another country to take their land and their money and their women...so why should modern Europe buck the trend? Trade and population migration are good for the gene pool and the economy, and leads to an influx of new technologies and cultural ideas, while the best elements of the original culture generally remain strong. Hey, Canada was built on immigration!

If you look at a map of the world you can clearly see that until the late 1940's all of the infusions of blood that made the British peoples came from a small circle in Europe.The pre-Celtic population were by all accounts from somewhere near Spain.Then the Celtic peoples.The Romans brought a small infusion of exotic blood from far flung corners of their empire.After that the circle shrinks.Angles,Saxons,Jutes & Frisians.Then Scandinavians.Then Normans who were Scandinavian descended.Then a huge period of stability.What we are facing now is the biggest ethnic change that these islands have ever faced.It doesn't really fit into the pattern of our history & isn't necessarily a good idea.

Sandy openchosky-No.I live in the Westcountry.We don't take well to change here & as a result we've insulated ourselves from the worst of multiculturalism.My small town in the countryside is nearly ethnically homogenous.The county that I live in is the whitest county in England.We'll survive.This isn't London or the North.This is Wessex.

There would of been no britons if it wasn't for the celts. There would be no england if it wasnt for the anglo saxons. Britain hasnt been invaded for a thousand years. Sincd the formation of modern britain. I dont know what all the fuss is with multiculturalism eventually we will all be a media run culture Because thats what everybody seems to want. We will be easier to brainwash once we are all the same 🤐
