If anyone is interested in helping out the eagle bus owners with the repair bill you can make a contribution via PayPal to us and we will apply it to their bill for them. The repair bill is going to be in the 15k range it looks like. So it's a big expense right at Christmas with 5 kids. They aren't begging I'm just sharing with our subscribers if you want to help you can. Put eagle bus in the info and send as a friend to help them out if you would like. It's not tax deductible or anything just a nice gesture if you choose. PayPal email is scott@busgreasemonkey.com We will be sharing the info on this later this week. It's going to be a very heart warming announcement when we reveal the donation total. Many of our Patreon subscription members have already contributed and hopefully by sharing this here we will really be able to deliver some even more awesome news when we hand over the final bill. I feel like scrooge handing them a giant bill right before Christmas. We are all working so hard to get them back safely on the road to continue or officially start their full time bus life after a very rocky start on the trip home after purchasing the bus.

At 8:08, the MAC wrench "knuckle saver" actually has to do with the angle of the wrench. You'll notice that the box end isn't in a straight line with the rest of the wrench but, that when on a nut, is angled up or down depending lion which way it's installed on the nut. When placed on a nut and angled up, it prevents your knuckles from dragging across the surface, saving them from damage. Or at least that's what my MAC tools dealer told me.

Unfortunately....mechanical education...you either understand it or you dont....and then have to trust in others...air filters is a prime example. Yet you watch tv and top race and drag guys running engines without. So gives your average guy in the street the idea its ok to do....because they do it. But what they dont realise that race engine gets rebuilt almost after every competition.
@BusGreaseMonkey
@BusGreaseMonkey Год назад
I have not quizzed the new owner on his air brake knowledge yet but it scared me that the seller sold him a bus that could not pass a simple air brake pre trip inspection and they knowingly sent him off through the Rocky Mountains in it. Of course all the rust, bad hubs, bad turbo, bearings etc all are concerns.
@davidjones332
@davidjones332 Год назад
London Transport ran a fleet of 6000 buses in the postwar period, none of which had air filters, and that wasn't unusual at the time. Many Gardner diesels did half a million miles without rebuiling, so either those old naturally-aspirated diesels were a lot more tolerant of air quality, or the US is a lot dustier than the UK!

To bad this guy didn't have this bus properly inspected by qualified individuals, could have saved himself a ton of money. Thankfully he had the good fortune of finding BGM and getting this sick Eagle running good and, most importantly, safe to drive his family around in. I know you already have a ton on your plate, but perhaps you could offer an inspection service, done with pictures and video online. You could tell them where to look and what to photograph and video and what questions to ask the seller, just a thought. Merry Christmas !

It’s a nice thought David but there’s not enough shops or mechanics around anymore so the ones that are functioning are backlogged at least a month or two and I haven’t found one shop or mechanic in the past year that was will ing to do an inspection for me. I got tired of waiting when I thought I found the right one after looking for just over 4 years and I had sent Scott a patreon msg to see if I could send him pics to see if he saw anything alarming but didn’t hear back about that so I bought it because I was told they had just had it inspected and they sent me the inspection report from that mechanic and there weren’t any red flags I saw so I flew to Florida and got it and within 60 miles, ti was sitting in the dark in South Georgia with no generator and no lights. That was just the start of the fiasco. I broke down 3 more times and had to finish the last ten miles on a tow truck on a Sunday night after hours. There just aren’t the mechanics out here with the experience to do prepurchase inspections right now and I’m not getting any younger so you either do the best you can or don’t get anything at all

@mfbfreak

Inspections for commercial vehicles over here are yearly as far as i'm aware. The air leaks and rust would definitely have been caught probably years ago. Inspections are a bitch because it's costly and you might end up having to leave your vehicle at the garage if doesn't pass, but it does make buying 2nd hand vehicles a lot easier, because at least the most safety critical things were in order at the time of the inspection. You can buy a 500 euro car here, and have one with fully functioning brakes, tires that are passable, and structural rust that's not yet bad enough to have failed a couple of months ago.

These are lessons for every want to be new bus owners, I am in that boat myself. I have not been able to make a deal on one yet, and perhaps I have made some owners a little frustrated with the questions that I ask, and I have been also asking for walk around videos inside and out showing everything working and running, so far that has happened a couple of times, and I saw things that worried me, so for the price that they were asking, I bowed out. I realize that every bus will need something, but when I see 10-15K worth of work along with tires and batteries, I'm out, definitely not looking for a project, unless the price is right, and I can find someone like Scott to see what all it needs, and fix it. I hope once everything is fixed underneath this bus, that this young man will enjoy it for the reason that he bought it, and not overthink everything, he'll have a nice bus, once these issues are all addressed. don't these things have to pass some sort of safety inspections to be plated and put on the road? i figure if it does whoever inspected it would be in some serious trouble since those are serious issue and the seller should be just as liable if he got it inspected. if you pay top dollar for a bus you should get what you pay for. i got to applaud that your willing to actually attempt to save it. i would have considered it a part out for safety sake with how rotten the frame looked. if it is paper thin in one section the rest is likely just as bad and i wouldn't feel right sending someone down the road with it. like where do you call it quits cutting and welding on top of the many other issues the bus has.

Most decent people would find it difficult to dispose of something without knowing first hand it was 100% ok . Normally a reduced price and disclosure of faults clears the path ahead . Just because it's a bus is no excuse for not knowing fully it's roadworthy ness. I think that is the worst bus I´ve ever seen on your channel. It´s scary that he drove it to the shop. Don´t you have some kind of vehicle inspection in the US? Most countries in Europe have yearly safety inspections where they check tires, brakes, wheel bearings, rust in the frame and so on.
@BusGreaseMonkey
@BusGreaseMonkey Год назад
In most states vehicles classified or titled as an “rv” are exempt from inspections, special licenses etc.

@@BusGreaseMonkey Ok, that seems like quite a bad idea. I wouldn´t meet a RV in that kind of shape on the roads... In Sweden all vehicle (cars too) have to pass a yearly safety inspection. It can be a bit annoying sometimes but you don´t risk meeting wrecks on the road so I think it a good thing we have it. It´s enough with all the crazy drivers :)

5:41 those gauges may or may not be accurate, need to calibrate them to tell, but they are definitely not precise enough for diagnostic purposes as the scale resolution is too coarse.

After seeing the before video, I would be scared to death to drive that bus before you have worked on it, especially down I-40 near Asheville NC, there some hills there. Moral of the story, Never buy an Eagle bus. Hello from Winston Salem ,NC..

This scenario is my worst fear buying one these vintage buses. With the potential money and time involved I would fly Scott anywhere and pay for his time for a pre buy inspection. I just dont know how this person paid top dollar for this nightmare. i am not faulting the owner, it could happen to anyone. I see Tony below has the same thoughts.

I looked and found it as well. Using the 2 wrench method is often impossible if not a bit hazardous & hard on the 1 wrench.

A question - do these buses draw air from the engine bay or from a separate air box that draws air from outside?

Unfortunately the filter that was in there was drawing from the engine bay. Not ideal and that’s why it plugged up.

Please explain, so he removed the air filter because it was getting filled with soot from the exhaust, which was excessive due to the clogged turbo due to the missing air filter? Though it’s a rear engine, how would the exhaust (and that much soot) get around and back into the intake? And kudos to him for requesting a DPF, can be headache, but emissions reduction makes a bus a more pleasant neighbour. I can only imagine how many people out here wish they could (legally) get away with an emissions delete.

That turbo explains a lot of his loss of power, looks like the intake impeller is spinning independently of the shaft in the vid? I had one going bad on my coach we just caught by accident too.
@ShainAndrews
@ShainAndrews Год назад
The compressor is firmly attached to the shaft and spinning at the same speed. The journal bearing is shot. Easy fix most of the time.
