I think Earl has so much going on in his head that he finds it hard to vocalise. He’s clearly much better at compartmentalising things on paper with a pen, which is why his lyrics are so insightful and intelligent
I absolutely suck at expressing myself verbally on the spot. It's not that I don't have the words, but that I've got ALL the words right here simultaneously. When you give me a notebook and a pen or a keyboard, the physical act of writing forces my brain to cut through all the noise - and it is ON. And on, and on, and on... Don't even think about getting into it with me via text; I will five paragraph essay your phone's memory to death. Just ask MY mom 😂
The dude knows precisely what he is talking about. I had friends like this growing up. They were really really smart but also really really sensitive and the barrier they put up was just to accommodate their own pains. There's a lot of innocence there, actually. He's joking through conversations because it's real pain he doesn't want to dwell on. His parents were intellectuals (his father, being a Poet Laureate for his native country). He's not about to give you answers because he's sensitive enough to know he doesn't know everything either. He's an incredible poet and has bonkers lyrical talent!

Dudes like Earl Sweatshirt, Billy Woods, Busdriver, Sadistik and Aesop Rock are just too cool to keep their brains upright all of the time. Some days they’re the most brilliant rappers of their generations, but they’re probably kinda tired and fried from working as the former on other days.

growing up around the same age as thebe, and listening to his music evolve, is always gonna be a distinguishable memory I hold. feel like kids in the future will never understand or experience the true aura of earl sweatshirt without seeing how he came up. Just listen to his music as it was released chronologically. That full understanding, and frankly, Thebe knows what's really happening. All this means is that he understands himself well if you ask me. Seems like the type of person who has an easier time expressing himself in song form where he can gather his thoughts rather than on the spot. I spend way too much time in my head thinking of how to say things to people sometimes and still wind up nervous that I may not be getting my point across at times...
Other than music I really like Earl cus I see myself a little. He is smart in the head but can’t communicate stuff out in person. Reason why he’s just different when it comes to music, he’ll paint a whole picture like Picasso in a song but it’ll be hard to explain things in-person because there’s a 1,000 ways to say it. You know; it just makes sense in the head.
My take is.....it's the energy we're surrounded by.... Like there is a lot of fake people around us...people who just want to be liked by everyone...so when we're surrounded by that type of energy we seem weird or something because it doesn't feel natural to speak your mind...someone help me out if you get what I'm trying to say lol
People arent always fake, some folks just have to fill the silence. This can lead to things being said that they dont mean or never intended to say. I think earl doesnt wanna speak because theres nothing he has to say sometimes. Its a trait i wish others had including myself

@G G, conscious rapping isn't only about direct social or political commentary but I think it's also about how the individual within the system interacts with it.... Maybe Earl's style is more introspective but in his earlier work it was more of a narration of his experience within a wider apparatus of existence under which a majority of individuals do have the same challenges, and I believe that qualifies it to be conscious rap. And if not, I think I do know what conscious rap isn't, and that's Drake.
