guys, i think people that say "ugh its just a remaster" (some of my friends did), dont really realize that since its a 2021 game, it will support the steam workshop.. this is huge, because many amateur modders prefer steam workshop over moddb for the simplicity, plus the steam workshop makes small improvement mods really shine (like a small economy rework for some faction to make it historical a bit more)

The older TWs are great for modding but the infrastructure to access those mods is horrendous. It's been 10 years and I still have no idea how to mod M2TW because the info and tutorials are absolutely scattered all over the damn place. Some modders just throw their mods out there with zero instructions on how to get them working. And if you ask for help some will even have the audacity to say " if you don't even know the basics you shouldn't even be trying mods".

The thing I miss most about the old TW games was the fact that when you built a city it just got better. Why did practically every single strategy game get so obsessed with provinces and city's always having trade offs? "Sure sire you could build a port.... but it will mean you're going to have to tear up all our farms!" "Why?" "Because those are the rules!!"
@mohammadnaghizade3544
@mohammadnaghizade3544 3 года назад
My Lord we can either build a barracks or a granary. It cant be both.
@therat1117
@therat1117 3 года назад
More interesting gameplay, basically. If the correct strategy is always 'build more stuff', then city building is an afk task (which it more or less was in Mediaeval 2 and Rome, esp. compared to the original Mediaeval Total War). All cities are more or less the same in Rome, which makes the strategy layer kind of boring once you've worked out the optimal building order. Mediaeval tried to spice this up by creating two different city types, but this really just meant you had to memorise two build orders. In Rome 2 and onwards you at least nominally have to think about what the actual best building to put in the individual settlement is based on what you want to do with it. As an example of how this was also really stupid - you can't fortify your settlements in Rome and Mediaeval 2 beyond what their settlement level would allow, for example, so your border regions were always more vulnerable than your core regions despite that logically you would want to focus fortifications on borders with tough enemies, which you could do in Mediaeval 1, and which was reintroduced in later Total War games. I did prefer the original Mediaeval system where certain buildings were locked based on what resources were available in the province, recruitment was based on building synergies (including the resource-locked ones!), and you could rush nearly any building tree but the main cost to you was the amount of time it would take to build the thing, so you had to consider very carefully what, where, and if you wanted to build at all. Empire/Napoleon /almost/ returned to this system but used cost gating instead, which I dislike, and which basically every Total War since has used, which reduces strategy in a different way, but to 'spam resource buildings for more money'. I think Troy was a step in the right direction on that front, but Troy also had a bit too much resource availability and more or less the same cost gating issue.
@chrisgibson8863
@chrisgibson8863 3 года назад
@@therat1117 I get why strategy games shifted to trading off this for that with settlement development. Originally I thought it was a cool concept. Then every single game decided to do a version of it and now they all just seem like math class and their rules are all arbitrary. It's just to roadblock the player with an annoyance, it's not historically accurate whatsoever in most cases. In the time period of Rome some cities really could have all those buildings, and some of them did. They weren't given arbitrary game blockers for the sake of a challenge. I don't know it's just my preference. I think the concept has become pretentious and I would rather go back to a simpler time.
@therat1117
@therat1117 3 года назад
@@chrisgibson8863 I feel that. I feel like you should be able to build massive cities with all the buildings, but have a realistic balance of time and cost to this, and not the stupid squalor or public order sinks. The idea of increasing city size with development is good, but the idea and balance of it is too underdeveloped in Total War rn. I especially don't like gating individual building tree progress behind settlement level - that really is arbitrary.

Okay but whoever is behind the UI is a god: - more detailed buttons in the grand campaign map - simplified logos/textures and use of contrasting colours in battle Modern and tasteful update to everything while still staying mostly staying true to the original. Does this guy have a degree in this stuff? Straight up professional work. Bravo.
@gustavchambert7072
@gustavchambert7072 3 года назад
It seems the exact opposite to me. The old UI was incredibly simple, especially in the campaign map. You had everything you needed, in a simple and clean design, and nothing you did not need. This new design looks way more over-engineered, with more crowded panels, more buttons and panels for the sake of it (not saying that some additions are not useful, but most seem less than necessary). The same goes for the battle UI. It was really simple, easy to use and elegant in its simple design. The new design is modern, sure, but it misses what made the original good in my opinion. An excellent example is that they have zoomed the camera out substantially on the battle map, making it much more in line with newer games like R2 and Atilla. This might seem insignificant, but being close enough at maximum zoom to still be able to distinguish individual movement is a big deal for the feel and visceral impact of the game. The fact that you can see less of the battlefield also forces you to take a more active role, zooming around more and paying more attention, thus involving you more in the action. This is where a decenty large and easily accessible UI is important, all things in it should be very easy to access, all the time, because my focus is on the field, not the buttons. Im afraid I also dont find the uppdates very tasteful at all. On the campaign map the soft, subdued colours and mix of sharp and blurred lines with soft contrasts has been replaced by much sharper lines and much more garish colours, making the overall Impression and feel a far cry from the original. The effect is similar in the battles, with bright orange range-indicators with opaque lines (which incidentally also take away the need to pay attention to your units) as just one example. From the trees in the battle around 30min into the vid, they also have not been very thorough in making the game look good, focusing on certain parts only. Overall I dont see a tasteful uppdate, but a clumsy attempt to paste the look and feel of newer games onto the old, with very little respect for what it was, why it was that way and what made it great.

Rome 1 just has superior mechanics that makes it a nice game to play. They should not have made Rome 2 on the Warscape engine in the first place. It’s like those Need for Speed games on Frostbite. You just can’t eat your soup with a fork.

I like the Family tree Heir, it helped me Roleplay a Campaign , Where my Parthian Faction leader got a vision with the Holy fire ordering him to visit a place far to the north and in cold winters, a circle of stones. In his search he fought his way through the desert- Bactrians, Seleucids, The Nile valley -Egyptians and the mountains of Greeks. When he reached the Arverni who were now ruling Rome, they told him of a place called Britannia where their Druids would go for a pilgrimage to such a monument. Making an alliance with the Arverni for their help, he travelled through their territory and did battle with the natives of the islands, finally subduing the faction that had the Stonehenge. His son had been by his side through all this, and on the next turn surprisingly my FL died, as if the game was cooperating with my story! The New Shah-an-Shah was crowned at the Stonehenge after his father's cremation at the same place with his ashes left on an altar near the monument. Would he be remembered as the Parthian Julius Caesar ? Now that Rome was destroyed 100 years before his birth?

4:50 I reckon one of the most important aspects of Rome's brilliance is it's simplicity. This seems to be lost on CA's modern games. I picked up Troy Total War a few months ago but was quickly overwhelmed. I've only got a few hours a week to play video games and Rome is simple enough to never be lost in the weeds.

HI HeirofCarthage , ,i have been playing the original RTW since it first came out over 16 years ago ,and what i would like to say is the lobby is a VERY important part of the game ,this is where we meet up ,make friends ,Private message each other and make clans ,so a lobby is essential for the multiplayer community ,i just wondered if you could ask the developers of the game to include a lobby in the game ,as this is viewed as very important part of the social side of RTW.

Rome was my first total war game as a child, after having played shogun 1 at a friend's house a few times.. It was mind blowing, lots of great memories. That said, I Dunno if a historial total war game can really do it for me anymore.. The delve into fantasy was something I always thought could be cool in total war, and it's hard to see the appeal of going back.

This game would be awesome with challenging battles and just better AI in general. I played the EB mod for the historical depth and detail but I could never finish a campaign because it felt so unrewarding with the low difficulty.

The UI is just horrible, it looks unpolished, bland and just too much like a mobile game. Especially compared to the original. I like they tried to keep the scroll-like style but its like they told the New Guy "hey Bro, you know how to work with paint? Go design us a new UI till tomorrow"

40 bucks for a 17 year old game, just because it has a new coat of paint and some quality of life changes? I don't think so. If I wanted to play Rome, I'd play Rome. My nostalgia glasses aren't strong enough to convince me for this, especially after Rome 2.

Feels like Heir forgot that "Garrisons" in Rome were just armies you stuck in a city (assuming they didn't change that) and so he could have just attacked and crushed that tiny Roman army that besieged Lilybaeum with the garrison and crushed it.

We need a Multiplayer Campaign for Rome Total war remastered. This is the perfect game for an Online (co-op/head to head) campaign for many reasons: 1. Probably the Shortest endturn Times of All Total war games 2. Modabillity to create small, fast paced campaigns with even shorter endturn times 3. Fast Battles 4. Both or (if you really want to make us happy) all three players Could play as the different Roman factions and then fight each other when the Civil war happens 5. The flaws of the campaign and battle AI (from the original and other Total war games) would not be a big Problem with an Online campaign and make the game much more challenging 6. Its Rome Total war!! We all loved it and Played it a thousand times over, its time to add something New to the experience. 7. Many people in the community are asking for an Online coop campaign 8. MODS! Just imagine playing mods with your friends

I like the replenishment system. Losses are permanent and must be replenished using reinforcements. Just merge units cards and bring in new units. It's not a hassle. I never liked the idea of insignificant losses where losing 40% a unit card means nothing so long as there will no be a fight in a turn or two, because it will be replenished for free.

I think Merchants are addition that was 'reverse engineered' from Medieval II, assuming Medieval II was just a revamped Rome I in terms of an engine. Basically merchants go to trade goods which symbols on the map and make money.

Heir there is also the trick when besieged, to sally out, use all your ammo and then run back , and do it every turn to whittle down the invading troops , i think successful sally also stops the siege engine buildtime.
