Burnsville, North Carolina is located in Yancey County, about 40 minutes northeast of Asheville. The town dates back to 1833 when resident John "Yellow Jacket" Bailey conveyed land to the state for the newly-designated town. Burnsville Town Square remains the centerpiece of this small town in the mountains named in honor of Captain Otway Burns, a North Carolina hero in the War of 1812 and later a state legislator. This 2014 video features shots of the Square, the statue of Otway Burns (placed in 1909), the historic Nu Wray Inn (a hotel that started as a stagecoach stop in 1833 and is included on the National Register of Historic Places), and the shops and restaurants along Main Street.
