Support me and the channel by putting The Indigo Parallel on your wish list. I'm about to open up a playtest for the Beta at the end of February so keep eyes on the Steam Page for that! store.steampowered.com/app/1550870/The_Indigo_Parallel/
I quite like the asymmetry of the Anubis. The turreted version is cool as well, but I suppose a spine mounted railgun makes more sense for such a small ship.
I appreciate that the finalized design decided to forego the turreted railgun because it's consistent with the later retrofitted Rocinante's excuse for not having its railgun be turreted being because lower-mass ships need them to be spinally-mounted so the drive can counteract the recoil, while supermassive ships like the Donnager and Truman class just don't worry about the recoil due to their high mass. Of course though, the turreted railgun concept is still great outside that particular context as the railgun retracting for stealth configuration is a very intelligent decision.
Also for small ships it would be even more important that the railgun axis intersects the center of mass of the ship. Otherwise the recoil from every shot would make the ship spin. Probably would even damage the railgun.
Ooh, I really like those Protogen soldier designs at 0:16 - guess they were carrying the Egyptian theme through to their armor at one point, with a stealth / identity concealing mesh cloak over the heads looking like a nemes? Wish they'd kept that.
I love how mysterious these ships were. You never really get a good look at one but they're still awesome. Also, I much prefer the sound design in Season 1. Everything in space was a bit more muffled, as though being heard through vibrations in the hull. Do you know how or why that change was made?
Whoa there is so much detail on the ship that goes unnoticed! I like how it is asymmetrical and symmetrical at the same time, I think that the geometry lends to the mysterious nature of the ship, very cool!
Ohhhh my. I've always loved Expanse ships and I've used them as reference when building ships in games. Ta latched railgun that pivots up to line up with the plane of the ship but stows away when not in use is really cool. I'm gonna have to try that.
Never getting a clear view of the Anubus, or Ann u bus as Amos called it, made it seem almost supernatural. One of many touches that made season one very underrated.
Awesome video. Didn't find your channel until after finishing season 6 but enjoy all this content. Can only hope this series gets the final seasons it much deserves. Your videos made me want to start learning blender just to see if i could teach myself enough to someday somehow create one of the three Laconian mega destroyers.
Thanks for the support, I've been thinking about doing Blender tutorials on how to build 3D models of space ships. At some point I'll get around to it :)
Loving this analysis. The Expanse has so much detail that goes unnoticed until you dive into it. You're making that possible! Thanks for this vid. Subscribing and gonna look for more of your analyses.
Similar to what @titandweevilmassacre wrote, a rail gun on top simply does not work on such sizes as it would bring the ship in a tumble with each shot. Having this exactly in line with the main engine works much better. A turreted rail.gun would be even worse, as it might shoot in a direction perpendicular to the engines, causing a major unintended spinning. Also the reflective hull, would not work, as it would literally reflect active pings (instead of absorb it to make them not go back). It needs to be a material as dark as sensibly possible both on the visible and non visible spectra. Having a turret like the final version seems to be convincing as well as good looking. I think they did a great work there. For more information about the stealth part of the ship, there are some interview with Ty explaining the ideas behind it.
Fantastic video mate, absolutely fascinating see the development history for this class, Would really love to see other classes of ship have similar videos! for example a few of the more unknown ships! like the Zenobia! looking foreword to your next video!
Could you make a video about the changes to the Roci's hull in the final episode? We only get a few looks at it during S6E6, but it looks it was updated with some new colors and textures to reflect the new lace armor it got. Thanks!
I am really glad they canned the reflective panels, cuz that would have been a massive scientific error. Reflective panels would have reflected radar and lidar, thus rendering the whole stealth thing moot. Their enemies would never come within visual range anyway, since they are pretty much always fighting from at least a few kilometers away. The black that absorbs active sensors (like stealth craft in real life) is much better.
Thanks for the insight into the behind the scene development of the this cool ship. I thought that the UNN would of built these from the Bush Naval Yards to take on Marco Inaros by season 5. I know that the series was following the book.
Question: Is spacedocks videos still considered canon and on that note the Donnager is labeled as 475.5m in video and in scale comparison it was over 500m?
I like the 7b version the most. Just slightly asymmetrical but still stealthy and cool looking. The version they ended up going with, while cool, definitely looked like they took half the hull of one of the previous versions and just rotated it around the railgun and central core of the ship. I liked it but the other versions seemed superior to me since they didn't strike me as violently top heavy and lopsided like the final version did.
Thank you very much! Very interesting video. Unfortunately, I did not find any information about the internal structure ... I hope it will be in the next Anubis videos... P.S. Unfortunately, the genre of your game doesn't suit me... I prefer shooters and RPGs with sim elements... For which I make mods ...
Much prefer the @2:33 itteration of the Anubis over the eventual end model, the one that made it to the show always looked a bit too messy to me, you could never get a good sense of the overall shape and core design of it. It's also a nice touch that the weapons are retracted to preserve stealth on that earlier concept model (much like modern day stealth tech in jet fighters), which granted, the end model still had with the torpedoes stored behind doors, but the railgun wasn't given the same treatmeant unfortunately.
"you could never get a good sense of the overall shape and core design of it" I understand from a 'beauty' view how you'd prefer those designs, but at the same time, the quoted words also explain why they likely switched to the final design, as that's exactly helpful for stealth ships that don't want to give away where they are from and who built them, right?! Great look at this ship Chris, as others have said, a lot of cool detail that we don't really get to see (apart from just as she's about to be exploding perhaps, if one freeze-frames). It's great to see the development of these ships, love it.
