(A slightly sharper version of this was posted on 15 July 2023)
Shot in the mid 1980's, Norton Harvesters operated approx 12 pea harvesters of various models and ages, in the days prior to Simplot ownership of the Edgells brand.
One machine was on what I think was its last season (39), which was an ongoing battle for the operator at the time.
The season used to begin in Queensland, move to Victoria then Tasmania. All Simplot peas are now grown in Tasmania, averaging around 23 000 tonnes.
Pea harvesters, like most things, have come along way since those days, being significantly more reliable, efficient and operator friendly.
Up until the late 1960's, Tasmania had numerous fixed 'pea viner stations', which saw the entire pea crop (vines and all) carted to these 'stations'
Then along came tractor drawn mobile harvesters which were then replaced by self propelled machines in about the mid 1970's.

Cheers Tim. I had almost forgotten I had this. So much has changed even with Pea Harvesters. These days they are bigger, heavier, faster and much more reliable and FMC no longer manufacture them. I will do another pea harvester vid this summer via drone.

Great clips there Ted, history captured. Cheers. We take those things for granted when we pick up a packet from the freezer section.

I actually had a tear in my eye watching that. Why? My late Dad used to be in charge of the FMC pea harvesters for Bird's Eye Foods Ltd in the UK. Seeing the side cab solid sheeted ones brought back memories of going out with him during the summer and driving them whilst the crew had a break (I was 14-16y/o!). They didn't stop 24/7 for six to eight weeks apart from refuelling and a good wash out to get the filth out of the Deutz aircooled engines to stop them overheating. He spent years tweaking and perfecting belt and beater speeds alongside FMC and after retiring in 1986, went countrywide helping out with solving 'problems' - I think someone actually tried to get him to go to Tasmania but nothing came of it. I can see differences in design; ie ours had catch hoppers that slid out when unloading so we didn't have to stop vining and the cab windows didn't open the same way. Great Memories; thank you so much!

Thx for sharing your back ground relating to these machines. I too spent many hours over summer out on them as a kid. All the best :-)

Some classic radio in the background at 7:50 7AD I guess because it mentions the Formby Hotel

I picked out a few of the best old radio bits to help date it, including the record bar reference. Was wondering if anyone would notice it!
