Early Morning Breakfast in the Mountains of Appalachia 

In 24 hrs, thousands of us will have watched Matt play with fire, Tipper fry eggs and listen to a couple of chickens put in their 2 cents. The popularity if these videos reflects how unsatisfying TV is, with its constant negativity. These videos are much better for mental wellness.

I remember so many nights camping out, frying taters and fish, pumping up a Coleman lantern, just sitting back on the bank watching the tip of our rods but usually getting sidetracked by the milky-way and stars. Those things that were taken for granted by a young boy, not knowing how good we really had it. The Bible says to not store up your treasures on earth, and God is a good God. Those memories with people we loved and who loved us, but are now long gone. Those are the real treasures that can't be taken from you.

Fifty years ago our wedding gifts were a green Coleman tent, stove and lantern. Still remember how good that bacon and eggs smelled outdoors.☺️

The sound of that Coleman stove running brings back memories from my childhood. It is amazing how a sound can take you right back to a place in time many years ago. I still have my Coleman stove that I bought in 1969. It has a red tank. Hasn’t been used since probably 1972.

Dad used to roust us out of bed early and we’d head for a state park. He’d cook breakfast or hot dogs and beans and fried potatoes. Sometimes it would be so cold I would keep my glued hand in my left pocket while I ate with my right hand (also gloved). That food tasted so delicious! There was so much laughing and conversation while we ate. Then we would go for a hike. Thanks for sharing! ❤

I admit that your video today has made me cry a little happily at the memories that came back to me. Watching Matt pump the lantern to move the fuel up and then light the little socks made me think of the days when we went camping when I was a child. Every night in our camper, my dad would play a game with us called 'dunk the light'. He would start to turn the lantern out and just as it nearly went out he would turn the gas up again and brighten it and we would holler 'dunk the light, daddy, dunk the light'! And your Coleman stove... oh gosh...in the days when we went camping, you had to pump the stove again like Matt did to get the gas to move to the burners and then light it. How my parents managed to cook meals on that delightful little stove for seven children and two adults I'll never know

Gosh this reminds me of camping with my family when I was young and Dad always cooked breakfast on a Coleman stove. So many wonderful memories and it was the best tasting bacon and eggs!

Love this episode of pure nostalgia! Can't begin to count the meals I've cooked on a Coleman stove (or on an open fire) in years past. The aroma of Matt's barefoot coffee reached me all the way out here in Wyoming. And the sizzle of the sausage patties cooking before Matt added the eggs was enough to get my mouth watering. Mmmmmm, good!

I would have gladly eaten a breakfast as you prepared in this video, but the breakfast I would invite you to share would be cooked in a nice, warm kitchen. Thanks for this; it made my day. For the first 11 years of my life, my family spent summers in a rural agricultural village in Mexico, where there was no running water or electricity. For the first 8 years we had no propane, either. Every morning I would wake to the sound of my dad pumping the Coleman stove to get the coffee on. And for most of my life, that sound has accompanied many of the best, happiest times of my life. Before I became disabled, my husband and I went camping 8 or 9 times a year. The memories are so strong, all the times I've stood clutching a cup of coffee and warming myself by a morning fire as daylight rose, that I felt I was right there beside you. I'm glad y'all recognize that those times are worth the work it takes to make them happen, and I hope the memories will warm your old age.

Oh my mercy! Watching Matt light the lantern & the Coleman stove brought back so many good memories! Daddy had showed me when I was fairly young how to light the lantern & the stove, but never let me unless he was with me. Him & mama loved cooking on the stove when we were out camping or just to do it at home cause food tasted so good! Daddy would fix a 3-stick stand similar to a T-Pee & he would hang a pot off it so mama could cook beans or something, and always, always had a coffee pot going! Those were such awesome family times shared with my oldest sister, brother-in-law, their 3 girls & my sister that's close to me. You don't really know how much you miss something until you're unable to do it & those who made it possible are long gone. I love the memories y'all continue to bring back to me! Matt, I cooked on one of those stoves when my friend Emily and I camped out at the beach. That was a major accomplishment for a "spoiled little girl", back in 1995. I loved it.🧡

In the '60s, going on summer vacation (from Texas to my aunt's in Key West) there were no fast food places. Mom and dad had the car loaded up with a Coleman stove just like that one, a metal Coleman cooler, and a matching Coleman water jug. Old percolator, too. We would get on the road before dawn and stop and cook breakfast just after the sun came up. One of my favorite breakfasts was in the Smokies one morning at sunrise. Traveling in style! Daddy would say if your nose isn't running, then the sausage isn't hot enough.

this video made me so emotional - my dad would always do the cooking on the coleman stove when we camped. there was always a pound of bacon cooking.

I really enjoyed this. I'll be getting out in the woods soon and cooking on a campfire. The food seems to taste better and it's so relaxing to sit around the fire at night. Also, I've made a batch of ginger and a batch of blueberry kefir water with your recipe Tipper. It is delicious!

We camped all 3 months of summer vacation. My Dad worked during the week then joined my Mom, brother and I on Fri to Sunday. We had a tent and hung blankets around three or four trees then put a wash tub in it to bath. We cooked over the grate on the campfire or a Coleman Stove. After about 3 years my parents bought a little trailer. We thought it was a castle. My Dad died two years later and we never went again but it sure is good memories. Nothing better than fried trout or catfish, fried eggs and potatoes for breakfast. Thanks for bringing that back to me. ❤❤

Great Job Matt! Good Camping, and Bush crafting! One suggestion, for your fire pit, have you ever made a jet log stove set up? You us a log the diameter of your fire pit with a chain saw cross cut in it! The log is level on both ends, and you brake in with rocks around the log! Light it up, and your toast! If you set a piece of soap stone on the top you can cook off it as well! Great job.

I know the sausage Matt is talking about, that’s why, we always ate Jimmy Dean’s mild or Bob Evan’s Mild Sausage, always loved that little hint of red pepper in it, McDonald’s used to have it and, that’s why, I always liked getting a couple of Sausage Biscuits there, but, they ended up doing away with that sausage. Oh my, this brings back memories of our camping trips when I was a child. It was our family tradition. We didn't have much money, so we never went on vacations or out to eat. We mostly ate beans, cornbread, and fried potatoes. But camping was different. My favorite part was gathering wood for the fire as soon as we arrived. We would head into the woods by the river with my parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, great aunts, great uncles, cousins, and Great Grandma Barnes. They would cook fish and breakfast on the Coleman stove, make coffee in the percolator, and we would all gather around the fire. Those were the best years of my life. I never felt poor because we had so much fun eating delicious food outdoors, fishing, swimming, and exploring the woods. Food always tasted better outside for some reason. Thank you for bringing back those precious memories of my family and camping. I'm only 47, and everyone except my dad, siblings, and cousins are no longer with us. I would give anything to be a young girl again, gathering wood and feeling important. Watching my family cook, chat, and enjoy the outdoors. It brings tears to my eyes this morning, thinking about those times and the people we've lost. Cherish every moment you have together. I can feel a strong connection to you all, like family. I was born into a Duke’s family! I was always excited to go to my grandparents house because they had Hellmann’s mayonnaise! We children loved to eat mayonnaise sandwiches with nothing else on them!

Our 50 year old Coleman finally wore out and we bought a new one. We use it during power outages since our camping days are over.

This reminds me of all our family camping trips. Cooking on a Coleman stove and a Coleman lantern to see to cook breakfast and later fried taters and pinto beans and hush puppies. My Dad,Mom, brother and sister are all dead now and I really miss that family fun. I never thought my younger sister and brother would pass before me. Then mom died 2 yrs ago and my dad this April. awe but ya'll are living the best of the rich life!! that breakfast looked amazing!! Tipper, I love my coffee with half and half but that Postom sure looked good. that was so funny Matt said he always did like them chickens hahaha. The family chats around the fire are so enjoyable, it's almost like we are right there with ya'll. I wish we could get some good sausage these days.

We still use a coleman stove all the time when we camp. My husband has it down to an art. Can't beat the old ways.

When you light the stove, keep pumping it until you turn the lever down after a minute. My stove and lantern are from the 70's and still work great!

My dad used to make sausage and put some in small, white cotton bags and hang them up in smokehouse to dry. I can still smell that good sausage. It was so good.

Oh my goodness, what fun, what fun!! I've done plenty of Coleman stove and lantern camping. But not in a looong time. Did 30 days, tent camping 🏕️ across the northern US and Canadian Rockies. Matt's right, camping is great as long as you can stay warm and dry.Thanks for the memories. Kept thinking that stove fire was going to be blue...and sure enough! I made your peach cobbler last night, which is exactly how I made it for years when my kids were growing up. My Mama made her cobbler using this recipe as well. I messaged my daughter about it and she said that she had been thinking about my peach cobbler for days and wishing she had some.
