Early Season ACORNS - Good or Worthless?

When deer season opens, and acorns have just started dropping, pay attention to what you're seeing on the ground. Some acorns drop early because they're ripe, but many drop early because of worms, and deer won't bother with rotten acorns. Hope this helps y'all! Good luck this season.

Catman delivers again. Thanks for taking the time to go into detail.and actually get to the nitty-gritty. I have not seen or heard of any other RU-vid hunter talk about this at all. Thanks again for showing us how to not waste our time in the woods!!!

Hi Catman. I’d like to add from my experience on finding the early “ hot” or what I call sweet oaks the deer will be hitting...... watch for oak trees that squirrels and especially birds are working. Several jays and other birds working in a oak tree will let you know the tree they are working is a sweet or desirable flavor/quality that the animals prefer. Plus they knock a lot of the nuts to the ground as well. I’ve killed a many of deer using the birds working a single preferred oak, setting up on it, and killing deer. Was really good at it when I was younger. Not so much these days. I really enjoy all your videos. Good luck.

This might possibly be the single most important scouting tip I've ever received. Thanks Catman! Other Hunters have spoken on Acorns but it's always been,Find an Oak thats dropping them. Never had anyone break down exactly how to tell if their mostly good or bad. See it's those simple,common sense things that most Hunters miss. Thanks again!

Deer prefer white acorns. The don't have the tannins in them that make the acorn bitter. White oaks can be easily found by looking at the tree leaves. They will be rounded with no sharp points. Red oaks have pointy leaves. The acorns in these have much more tannins, making the acorns more bitter. Deer will leave these on the ground longer and let the sun and rain leach the tannins out of the acorn. Then they will eat them. Catman, great content! Health of the acorn is just as important as the points I made above. Keep it up!
@CatmanOutdoors
@CatmanOutdoors 4 года назад
Some white oaks such as chestnut, chinkapin and swamp chestnut have serrated leaves. Deer will eat the red oaks before the whites drop. I don’t think the tannin ever goes away. They just can tolerate it.

Nice tip bro! Thats the trees defense for shedding portions of growth that wont benefit it anymore. In Beaufort, SC we have Live Oaks, water oaks, Laurel oaks and willow oaks all started to drop. Deer dont even come out of the timber. You better get in the woods scout below oak groves and look for deer chewed acorns and pawed ground. Good luck this season Catman!!

Hey Catman, I'd love to see you do one on identifying different types of oak trees, leaves, bark, nuts, tannins content, etc, not just finding acorns that aren't rotten. Most hunters, young and old, never educate themselves on food sources and why deer prefer certain types of nuts over others, they just find acorns and set up, then wonder why they're not seeing deer. Where I'm hunting deer will walk right past a ton of chestnut oak acorns just to hit a single white oak, tell your viewers why! Great video but would love to see you go more in depth on early season food sources ( for your area). Fine job my friend on your channel and keep on keeping it real!! Good luck hunting!

Fantastic tip. When squirrel hunting with my dad he taught me to look for good acorns without weevils, as he called them, if I recall, but he wasn’t nearly as comprehensive in how to tell the good from the bad without showing me to pull out my pocket knife and try to, as you say, keep from cutting myself. So you said if still in the cap and/or mixed green/brown or light in weight, they’re likely wormy. Great observation. Gotta get on some good red oak acorns this afternoon. Thanks a bunch, man. Great video!

I hunted a WMA on the eastern side the past two days, and the white oaks are raining down from certain trees. They seemed to be keying on the sawtooth acorns though... I hunted over persimmons, and had a few coming in. My buddy who was hunting the sawtooth was covered all day. Just seems to be really random and sporadic right now. Agree with you also on the chestnut oaks... I have a bunch on my farm, but the deer rarely eat them unless all other varieties are absent.

You’re very knowledgeable. Good information. One key part I wish you would’ve added was what does a edible by deer acorn look like? Do you have to just begin to look at acorns and cut them open to see how many are warm infested? Suspect there is a site method that deer use that we could use to determine edible acorns. Thanks

Awesome tips! Hey can you explain the difference of squirrel sign vs deer sign as it relates to acorns? Like how can you tell which one has eaten them?
@CatmanOutdoors
@CatmanOutdoors 4 года назад
Bowhunting Soul it can be tough because both deer and squirrel will chew and spit out the caps in pieces. But sometimes deer will bite the cap off which leaves a single notch in the edge of the cap from the deers front teeth. White oaks don’t apply because the caps fall off when the nuts are ripe.

New sub here and awesome video. Not about acorns but do you wear permethrin treated clothes anytime you go to the woods or do you stop after a few freezes? Been dealing with some issues from tick bites for the last 5-6 years and have finally gotten back to where I can eat red meat. I really want to start hunting again and after seeing how well permethrin works I may give it a shot.
