I had a boss once who had staff meetings every Monday, and he’d go around the room and have each person talk about what they did the past weekend. As an introvert who values alone time and crafts, my answers were always less interesting than everyone else’s. It sucked, and I dreaded it every week.
Wow, that’s awful. As a fellow introvert I would find that torture. But even if I weren’t, I’m pretty sure I’d find it invasive. It’s no one’s damn business what I did over the weekend, especially not my boss’s! 🫤

I started working with a personal trainer a few months ago. I've never been super athletic or coordinated, but he's been incredible to work with. He knows my capabilities and pushes me when I honestly don't think I can do something.
Even though it is not your priority, you might be surprised that your body changes shape from weight training. Most important as you say, is to keep strong so we can keep doing what we want to do as we get older. Love your podcast
Ok, I'm on the west coast and in a VERY body conscious place. I go the Y and LOVE weight lifting. I realized that the "runner's high" that people talked about through my 20s was absolute bull, but when I'm lifting heavy with loud, girl positive music...my brain goes quiet and I feel so good. Also, after majory surgery, my doc said a week in the hospital is like a month on bed rest. And I was in the hospital for a week and basically on bed rest for three months. I'm nowhere near as strong as I was, but you know what, still going. Sweating like a race horse while walking because of periomenopause, but damn, I feel strong!
I will sit in weirdness with you anytime - and actually have for now like 12 years? So many of the things you touch on, no one else really does, and they are important! So is wool, and stitching and fun fabrics. All good!

Good point about social media. I thought I just didn't get the process and that maybe I just needed to be better at it. Turns out being better just means being sucked in for more time and so I quit. It turned my brain to mush and I got nothing out if it but a few pretty pictures and all the things I wasn't creating. I can pin pretty things on Pinterest and sketch in my notebook and have real conversations.

I started lifting seriously by accident 8 years ago. I love it. I also sit on my butt knitting and crocheting. I love that too. But, improbably, I found myself at the World Powerlifting Competition in bench press in Tokyo in 2019. NUTs! Got a Gold for Team USA. I have a world record! Who am I? Not anywhere near who I was in High School or in my 20s. I am not smaller than I was 8 years ago. So, anyway. It’s you and the metal. It’s not hard, its just heavy. I always wonder if I can get that next 2 pounds up in the air. I ❤❤❤ it. You can do it. It’s just you and the bar or just you and the weights. Enjoy it -
You are awesome! I wish I could go to your gym class with you. I tried a week of one of those circuit type workout classes. Omg! They had no idea where I was at in my fitness or lack there of. I kept telling myself to go at my own pace and someone would try to push me. 😂 they did not understand why I was ok with bringing up the rear…somebody’s got to do it I figured. 🤷🏻♀️ Your podcasts are always so entertaining, educational and thought provoking. So awesome you’re doing strength training!! I loved hearing about it! I also had an oh shit epiphany when I was in my late 40s. For me I couldn’t lift a light box over my head to put it away 😧 Been lifting 4 times a week for almost 10 yrs and love the way I feel as well as what my body can do. Thanks for a wonderful episode and keeping me company on a early morning 🥰 I really miss going to the gym (for strength training), my tactic was always be there while it was empty so I could be less self conscious. Hope I can pick it back up when my kids are older but nowadays I don’t give a fudge if someone is looking at me weirdly.. as you said - I shouldn’t care even if people look 😄❤️
Oh my gosh. I despised PE in school. Gymnastics week was a circle of hell for an uncoordinated girl who has never been able to do a cartwheel. I am 54, and I keep telling myself I need to start weight training so I can become an old lady who can still get around. Kudos for getting to the gym. 💪🏋️♀️
I feel you with all the things. I love weekends when I don't have to go anywhere so I can go braless. Also, I feel weak, off balance and tired. Menopause is no joke. I should be more proactive and do some weight training and get stronger for just basic life. I don't have a sit down job but somedays I feel really old. Love that you make me feel normal and it is OK to feel this way.
Love the fitness talk! I recently started lifting weights and I never thought I'd enjoy it but being able to see yourself progress is great! I was ecstatic when I did 8 pushups in a row for the first time since I was a teenager! And love the attitude of focusing on getting stronger instead of expecting any outward changes.. that has been my attitude as well... makes it more 'fun.'

Hired two weeks before the first day of school. 😂🤬…week one…no internet for a heavily internetted curriculum. I need silly and refreshing, straight talking, hand making goodness. 🌈🌈🦋🦋 Teaching Cornell notes to 6th graders who missed two years of school…the learniest years to boot. I’m hoping to get them ready for middle school.❤️ Once I recover from the out of pocket expenses of this misbegotten endeavor I’m treating myself to one of your bags.
As a fellow fattie who has before/is again in the middle of also trying to regain muscle for my own reasons as well I have some advice that may or may not be helpful for you. I found that doing the arm things while seated helped a ton with stability so i could focus on breathing and muscles. Then doing some leg exercises separately if i was working on that. I did also use machines, but I also was not a fan of the vibe of my rural gyms in Montana.... Its never the look of the place its always the people around me. It was just too much for my brain to juggle the standing the breathing the lifting etc because I am Spicey :D (Also FYI it did NOT start at 3 45 min sessions- i DID do about 10 for dressing 15 of working out and 10 to dress down for at least a mo and then it significantly improved to where i could go 20 then 25 etc) Of course with a grain of salt i dont know your overall goal is or current level, only mine. and you have no obligation take it :D
Thank you! I’m so glad you found something that works for you, and I agree, I am so spicy that breathing/lifting/balancing/FOCUS really feels like too many things to juggle. I’m beginning to understand why some folks lift while high. (If only that helped me focus rather than rendering me absolutely useless.)

Although it's very good to want to better your health, but you need to accept your age and status, whatever that may be only because if you don't embrace the time you are in, it will pass so fast and there is no turning back, you loss.
