Hi Becky so according to the book Keeping Chickens by Ashley English. I'll just quote: " Egg eating is a form of cannibalism that starts when a hen accidentally breaks open an egg, samples the goods, and realizes she likes the taste. After that, others may get in on the action and begin breaking open eggs deliberately. Egg eating may result from too crowded living quarters or from eggs left in the nesting box far too long. Discourage this nasty behavior from ever beginning by emptying nesting boxes early and relocating the instigator to a new home. You can discourage future eating by placing bogus "egg" that have been blown empty and filled with mustard inside the nesting boxes. My friend ownes hundreds of hens for business and she removes the eggs twice daily. Good luck in making a fake egg filled with hot mustard. Hope this helps. You don't have to kill the trouble maker just separate her for a while and trick her with the fake mustard egg.--Goodluck. Love your videos.

Thanks for that!! I just added wooden eggs to the boxes and I will see if that will help and I bought a bag of oyster shells. I guess some people are having hard times finding them but we have them here. And I need to remove them more than I do so I will start doing that! Hopefully it works!

Copper tape, tacked all around the edges of the flower boxes will prevent slugs. It creates an electrical charge that "shocks" them. Worth trying.

Yes you can winter sow potatoes, just need heavy mulch to protect from deep freeze, I put about 12 inches of organic straw over mine. It worked well for me

Always leave one potato behind when harvesting potatoes under woodchips to grow on the following year. I’ve always discovered that whole potato harvests left in the ground of wood chip covered potatoes will store in the wood chips they grew in until you need them throughout the WHOLE winter. I’ve just harvested 15lbs of potatoes from one plant I left in the ground. I’m in the UK.

@@AcreHomestead I originally planted seed potatoes in a bed about 2” below the surface and covered the bed with fairly fresh woodchips about 6” because that’s all I had. The potatoes pushed the wood chips up as they grew so didn’t need to “earth up” or cover. Just pulled a plant up to harvest or scrapped around under the foliage to harvest a few at a time. If a plant was pulled I popped a potato back in for the next year. I didn’t have the space to store all my end of year main crop harvest so just left them in. I harvested what I needed out of where they grew over the winter. Still harvesting now. And where I popped a potato back last summer/fall foliage has formed... rather like a volunteer. I’ll continue this method at this area until I start seeing blight/disease. It’s an experiment. I’ve also covered the asparagus bed in woodchips two years ago. No need to weed. They’re fine. Strong and healthy. I also grow potatoes in buckets in compost just in case....

Sis in law's had a 10 day head start to root. Makes a big difference. Just to be safe we always wait until 1st or 2nd week in june. Both these veggies like real hot weather to thrive.

I feel so bad for you watching this video at the part of your pepper and tomato loss. It is a huge loss to be so invested and then lose some. We had the same thing happen in GA this spring and lost a good bit of tomatoes. Thank you so much for sharing. What a fabulous garden.

You can break up your egg shells and put them around your plants and the slugs won’t slime over them. And paint some small rocks red and put them with your strawberry plants. The birds will peck those before the berry emerges and then they’ll leave your harvest alone when it comes in.

My apple tree gets cedar rust and look similar, I use Neem oil ( fruit tree spray) spray eat budding, blossom & possibly onset of fruit but can't remember for sure. I don't always get all 3 times done, but it really helps.

My dog loves asparagus so much, and other veggies too (sweet peas, carrots, corn, green beans, beets, etc), either raw of cooked. You might want to try giving some of those to your dogs to see if they like it. Also, you might want to try drip nozzles instead of spray nozzles to help avoid mold and other pests on your plants.

Love your videos! I put epsom salt around the garden, like in a line, bring the bag out and just pour out a good line around perimeter kills slugs. Chickens eat their eggs for the calcium, get some oyster shells it’s a mineral issue usually.

Asparagus is a really big delicacy in Germany, they even have Asparagus festivals. You're only supposed to eat it in season, and the white Asparagus is the best. One family I lived with there preserved it in a pickle, so they could have it year round. Pickling is a massive thing there, so there's some great recipes for pickled foods. One in particular I could see you liking is beef roulade. It's a sort of stew, but the beef is wrapped around a filling that's usually sauerkraut and beets with gherkins and is often served with potato dumplings

In the 2 beds that are totally shaded… kale is great! But try Jerusalem artichokes! They grow similar to a potato or a sweet potato. You can replant the tubers like you would a potato and harvest after harvest after harvest. No need to rotate beds and they do awesome in shade with absolutely no attention at all! Love your garden and that it is in Clark Co. Im from Portland and always had a garden. I now live in Florida for retirement. Miss the garden i had so much. Anyway you dont plant until after Mothers Day per my mother. Ive always did what my mother said and never had a problem with my plants freezing. Im in my 70s and enjoy your garden, your testing , your cooking and canning and how you save your food you grow. ❤

Potatoes - Paul Gauchi (sp?) of the Back to Eden video (with wood chips); harvests and plants at the same time with the largest of his potatoes he just plants those again at the same time he harvests the potatoes he will eat and save. His garden is the Pacific NW also so you should have no problem. I have had the same thing where I didn't harvest all the potatoes and it grew the next year, I'm in zone 6b. I just covered the same potato bed with straw before winter. I think it's mixed idea that you "can't" plant in the same bed, since we're home gardeners, it's easy to amend our gardens, so I plant the veg in the same bed without any problems.

A bit late, but I did scroll down to see if anyone mentioned the plum, but gave up after a while! It is fine to prune plum trees in the summer. I feel your pain regarding slugs and snails! We also had a very late frost and so much rain here. Thank you for the tour.

We've been raising chickens for at least 20 years. They often eat more than one a day and if they don't finish the second one others will eat it. We just kill them but you might separate her and possibly try the mustard egg a few times with her. I hadn't heard of that trick.

Hi Becky, not sure if others have already said this but egg eating can be a sign that a hen needs more shell grit in their diet (that's what they use to make the shell of the egg). You can supplement with crushed egg shells (not whole)

Those garden beds are so gorgeous😍, the way you interplant things is beautiful. I had a tree that started to do that, it turned out to be Peach tree borer. I don't know what to say about it, my tree died.😰 The same thing happened to me with my peppers and tomatoes. I planted them out and we keep getting frosts when they say the temps are going to be warmer. I didn't lose all of mine, I think I would be crying if I did. I had it where one was fine and 2 feet over another one was dead. I also bought a flat of peppers to replace mine. I live near a cheap nursery where I got plants for .50 cents each so It was not as much of a loss to replace. I told myself I have plenty of time to start over though too. You look like you put so much work into your gardening and plants, I know that must have been heartbreaking. I'm glad you didn't give up, I'm looking forward to watching your garden grow this Summer and the cool things you do.

Apart from the great suggestions to stop the chickens eating eggs in the future,it's also important to note that sometimes they do this because they are lacking in certain vitamins & minerals especially through the colder months & when they are at their peak laying season their calcium & omega levels can get quite low.its important to provide them with shell grit for added calcium& lots of dark leafy greens eg spinach &... some information I run into years ago is that each chicken needs around 10-12 sunflower seeds or something similar that will provide them with omega 3 vitamins & calcium that they lose when laying. I found that adding these to their diet helped a lot .even a mixed grain feed that has suitable nuts & seeds including the sunflower seeds in the mix .

Becky since this video was awhile ago I'm sure you ready know. I have always been told not to feed my chickens whole egg shells from cooking or baking because the chickens can learn to start eating their eggs. I have always dried and crushed them well and add it to their feed so it doesn't look like egg shells. I sure love your channel! You are amazing!! 🥰

I realize this is an old video so you probably have already decided on a solution. But chickens can definitely teach each other about eating eggs. We keep ceramic eggs in to help prevent and it helps the young ones know where to lay. (Can also help prevent predators from stealing your eggs)

Howdy Becky, so I'm beginning to catch up on your vids. Your garden looks great. We'll planned and laid out. Love that you're using chickens in that narrow chicken tractor,well done. You have probably already dealt with the dead/ dying tree branch but just in case you haven't. Yes cut it off. The sooner you do the less energy the tree will waste on it. Plus improve chances of it not spreading and lastly it will encourage the rest of the tree to begin to grow and fill that space with new tree. Since we live in same region I thought I should mention I don't put peppers, tomatoes, basil etc in until after mid May. I have been burnt far to many times because I thought it would be alright. I do keep thinking about using some low tunnels to start a few weeks earlier and really give them a boost of heat through may and June. Slugs and snails. Start laying down the slugo slug bait when starting any garden on our side of our state. It won't hurt us or the animals and can be used in a organic certified garden so just use lots of it everywhere. Basil, wonderful, wonderful basil. Those damm slugs ALWAYS go after basil first. And your chickens didn't seem interested in that snail? Maybe next time crush the shell some so they see the " meat". However it's geese that crave slugs and snails so maybe that gives you a good excuse for adding some more birds to the farm. Have a great day. ⛅

(Beth here) I just saw this video and thought I'd share a planting tip from my mom. She lived in Clark County for over 80 years and had a large canning/freezer garden every year when I was growing up. For warm weather crops (tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, corn, etc) she didn't plant until the last of the winter snow had melted off Silver Star. That's the highest of the foothills (not St. Helens or Hood😊) that you can see to the east. Then it's pretty safe. The problem is the soil temperature, as well as the frost date. Just a thought... keep trying. It's about persistence. 😊

you can give the chickens the snails as a kid my grandpa had us kids doing it all the time. and he said to say that if you feed your chickens there own eggs shells they will break up there own eggs after laying one if they have a taste for it. he said try baking the shells on low for like 15 mins then crush em up around your veggies to help prevent snails works better then the beer trick. if your still looking for some advice.

I miss my big garden . I have a small balcony now and have 3 different styles of tomatoes small medium and beefsteak. I have garlic, potatoes and I have a small cactus that sprouts a pad now and then I add it to the homemade cookies I make for my dog, and the strawberry clipping I got for free has gone crazy. I know I've a natural green thumb. And when I cook I light a candle and turn on music it's so wild the awesome meals I make but I can't concentrate long enough to plan and put together several meals at once. I'm pretty sure I have had previous lives because of the things I've experienced in this life.

I saw a great slug control once. Don't know the name of the video but I remember a guy used 2 thin wire around the bed, created a circuit powered but a battery that is store in a mini tupperwear to protect it from water. The slug stop as soon as they touch both wire since they close the circuit and get electrocuted but that does not kill them

Becky Invest in Greenhouse Film Yard Plastic and cover your beds if you plan to plant in Feb or March. Never plant after 1pm because you're not allowing the sun to warm the soil completely after you plant. If you plant in the morning and cover with the Greenhouse Film Yard Plastic the heat from the sun will keep the earth warm even through the night. Don't beat yourself up or get emotional if you lose a few plants due to frost, we've all been there and done the same thing. You've just learned what not to do in the future. That's a learning curve we've all had to learn the hard way. Chin up.

I think its been a freakishly freeze dipping spring for a lot of people. I've had a couple of scares with my stuff in my greenhouse. I've invested in a small heater just to be safe... I'm sorry for you heart break, I think most of us gardeners understand your heart. :) Love the videos. Keep up the great work... Maybe if I get up enough nerve, I will start to document my gardening adventures to have for my family too :)

I completely understand how you feel about losing your peppers and tomatoes it’s heartbreaking. I too am a newbie gardener and learning a lot. Well I don’t have to worry about frost where I live I do have to worry about heat, bugs and critters. The first time I planted green beans they sprouted were doing so well was a month in and one morning I woke up went out to the garden and the bunnies totally ate the raised bed of green beans I was so upset why they never touched them earlier I have no idea . So completely understand. We do our best and Mother Nature is not always kind. There will be losses and we have to start over sometime

I'm a 40 year plus gardrner and I have replanted tomatoes 3 times this year and peppers twice. Our weather has been crazy! My peas are just now loaded up in July. We are in our 3rd week of triple digits, its insane.

If you check in with your United States Department of Agriculture office for your state, they usually have great handouts on canning and preserving food, how to do soil testing (which they usually do for a small fee), native plants for your area, and so on.

11:49 yes absolutely. I saw Jim kobaleski (on Pete Kamari’s greendreams tv channel ) do that to save time on planting potatoes each season. He will harvest the plant and re bury the biggest in the ground until the next season

Hey you should get a couple of pet ducks. They can stay with the chickens most of the time, lay eggs and LOVE snails and slugs. Oh and they dont dig in your plants the way chickens do.

Love your video. We have many old (7years and older) rescue hens that insist on laying eggs quite heavily at times. We don't eat eggs ourselves but we do feed them to our cats and dogs and give them away to friends and family. Needless to say we don't worry if the hens eat their own eggs but in the past 30 years of having laying hens a few things have become clear to us about why they seem to do this. The little white Leghorn hens seem the most prone to egg eating (We wonder if its because they are bred to produce so many eggs from such a small body that perhaps they just require an abundance of calorie rich food at times?) They typically do this in the early spring when they begin laying heavily and then spontaneously stop doing it once the fresh grass and weeds are in abundance and we begin feeding them soaked cracked grains/chop (like overnight oats for chickens). We have seen the other hens join in on the egg eating once the egg is broken but have not observed them doing the actually breaking themselves. Gathering the eggs frequently throughout the day seemed to help as well. We always have oyster shell available for the hens and feed them eggshells that we dry and crush. Good luck!

I noticed an evergreen tree over the two beds in the back of your garden. Alot of plants cannot grow under an evergreen. So i googled it. Apparently leafy greens like kale, spinach, lettuce, cabbage, carrots and potatoes will grow well under an evergreen. Just found your channel and I love it. Thanks for the videos. ✌

Save seeds from volunteer plants. They are more acclimated to your garden than store bought seeds. Do plant a few store bought seeds to cross pollinate. Nice garden!

I completely understand the disappointment of losing all your starts to weather. We get severe weather which means hailstorms in my area right after my last frost date. I have had more plants hailed out than I would like, but every area has some adversary to deal with 🤷‍♀️. As far as the luffas go, Living Traditions Homestead has a video on growing and drying luffas in their area. They are in southern Missouri but I wouldn't know why at least some of that information wouldn't be helpful. I subscribed about a month or so ago, really really like your channel!

To keep slugs out of your garden you can put broken egg shells around you plant. The egg sheep hurt the slugs so they won’t get to the plants. Also you can use copper tape or pennys on your raised flower beds but you have to make sure you have no gaps that the slugs can get through

If someone wants to be a successful gardener, you have to spend lots of time in the garden dealing with pests. It's not something one can ignore or wish away.

Plastic easter eggs or wood eggs. And check for eggs more often. Add some calcium source . Oyster shell in separate feeder give them choice if they need it they will eat it.

I know I am late to the party here, but if you are starting plants indoors (and you may do what I am about to say, if so you can disregard), about a week or 2 before you transplant to the beds, start bringing them outside for part of the day, increasing the amount of time outside. The plants get used to the constant temperature indoors and can't acclimate to the fluctuating temperature in the early season.

The jugs work just take the lids off mine went threw 4 freezes all where good they need to be harden of, that's 150 plants. I do better with carrot and parsnips in the last season no bug pressure and leave some in the grown for winter. Try the latino kale wonderful, your celery leaves need to go to the blender to powder it wonderful to cook with in the powder. Find the stinging nettles for tea has the most nutrients. Borers, wait till winter to cut off,more water to the rhubarb your doing good keep planting you have a long growing season, our weather is going to get colder for a while so look for more cold growing things, it's called the grand solar minimum look it up.

Raw asparagus is good. When I cook it, I usually do stir-fry so they're tender-crisp with some tasty charring.

Start by using moist paper towel. put seeds on half of the towel spray water on them but not soak, cover with other half. Put on hard card for stability. Put into zip bag warm area. Check to see for sprout. If so plant it.

This is particularly helpful for germinating parsnips which are notorious slow to sprout - works great!

Collect your eggs regularly to give them less time to eat eggs and making sure they are getting enough grit. Every now and then one might accidentally brake an egg and they will eat it but that doesn't mean they will always start eating every egg. They often eat shell's from hatched eggs as well.Good luck

You could use small containers of beer to attract and drown your slugs. You could also apply diatomaceous earth. The slugs' bodies get cut up trying to cross over the paths of diatomaceous earth.

I don't know how I missed this video. I feel you big time on having such a failure and thinking about giving up. This past summer with the massive heat wave had me very low and depressed about the garden. Both my blueberry and my huckleberry bushs died and it stunted some other things. I also inadvertantly killed my corn and kale and was just like "I quit!". But I decided to take the fall off (with the exception of planting a fall snap pea crop) and start again fresh in the spring. I know where I went wrong and am coming up with ways to protect my most prized crops from 115 degree heat which we'll probably get again next year. It's hard living in 8b in Western WA because our weather can change on a dime and kill everything. We got a late frost this last year.

Put a few wooden eggs in the boxes they’ll peck at it and won’t like the result. Also grind up some egg shells and give the a bowl. they might need the calcium. For the garden if you want more volunteers you need to mulch over the winter with big loads of straw or leaves. I get maybe 8 sweet potato’s volunteer every year.

I fed my city chickens oyster shell calcium they thrived I also had a 40X 40 garden I also had rabbits so the mix of rabbit poo and chicken with some steer I had the best fruit and veggies

Hi from South Africa we use creushed egg shell to keep slugs and snales away from our plants the can't go over them and it is also good for the doil. Try it .

Make sure to gather eggs as soon as you can and maybe keep the egg eater out of there. We give all of our shells back to our chickens. We just toss them over the fence to their coop area every evening after supper. We save all scraps in a coffee tin on the counter through the day and then take them out every night. Loved the garden tour! We are doing wood chips too and some other "experiments"

You can leave a white golf ball in the egg box. The hens will think it’s an egg and try to peck it, and it will be hard and hurt them slightly. That will train them not to eat eggs because they’ll think the rest are hard as well. But I’ve also heard it’s not bad for chickens to eat eggs. Many animal sanctuaries feed cooked eggs to their chickens. So no need to worry either way!

Try a little flock of indian runner ducks and let them roam free in your garden. They can be trained from a young age to eat slugs and snails all day (they'll do it as adults without training too) by feeding them to them and they're much less destructive to plants than chickens. I mostly grow ornamentals in my garden, but every night it's an invasion out there; plants are reduced to lace - especially now with this depressing summer so I'm seriously considering some myself...Might be worth looking into for you too.

I read this in a very old book but I’ve never tried it. Lay a row of Pennies around the area and it will keep snails and slugs away.

Usually chickens will eat their eggs if their calcium difficent and/or protein difficient. They will also do it if they don't have enough room or are stressed. They also like the taste of eggs, so if by accident one is cracked and they taste it they will keep eating it since they develop a taste for it

Plant loads of white Swiss chard everywhere in your winter garden for chickens. They don’t like slugs. Waking ducks do. And the walking ducks are delicious. Dig a pond. Not for ducks, but for frogs that eat slugs.

I was told ,iff u take slugs away from ur home and chuck them ,like over the road they wont come back ,where if u just chuck a little they return, so further better ,just collect them ,and take on a drive when ur out ,might get the hint thru not wanted

The guy from the Back to Eden garden has had potatoes growing in the same spot near his pond for years. The key seems to be that pond water with nutrients.

Omg I fill your pain. 2 days after I planted my tomatoes and peppers we had a hailstorm and it messed up all my plants. And I don’t don’t know what I’m doing wrong with my eggplant seedlings. They just don’t want to grow.

I feel so bad for you. I just finished covering all my tomatoes again. My last frost date was April 20 but it’s still 39 at night! It’s Infuriating for a gardener. I love watching your videos. I’ve watched them all, some more than once like your batch cooking ones. You’re such a great cook. Your pasta video was really fun. Do you make your own pizza? I’m thinking of par baking crusts to keep in the freezer for a quick dinner. We like thin crust pizza. But every time I make it, it puffs up so thick. You’re doing so great for your second year. Oh man :( so sad to lose those plants! We cover ours with sheets. I am way overboard with it and will cover them if its.going to even get close to freezing or frost because in Iowa the weather likes to say one thing and do the total opposite!! I think you'll still have a great turn out!

I lost a tomato, during the replant the egg below was obvious🤢. Also I start 3 sets of each tomato that I want. Then plant on 4/15(tax stress relief) and again 5/1. Then give away the extra seedlings. Your garden is so full of life, It is beautiful! Also Becky "oh a snail😒". Lol🤣

Crush some of your eggshells and sprinkle around the plants the slugs like most. Just like giving them back to the chickens, it will add nutrients back to the soil. Good luck. 👍

Becky if you buy saucers 3 for each bed you only need cheap beer just keep topped up I'm sure you will get fed of the slugs, they are flippy pest, you need to treat the slug problem ASAP before they completely eat all your vegetables I hope you try this it doe's work, good luck, hope you safe your produce. Heya... Ducks eat slugs and snails and give you huge eggs.... Side note Keep your washed Egg shells and crush... if you layer it in the garden, they WONT go in because it cuts their bottoms... Hugs from Esquimalt

At last we have no more frosts I’m hardening off my tomatoes now. I used nematodes for the slugs can’t bear to lose plants to them. Your doing a good job I’m learning too it’s my first whole year gardening I have a small garden but my brother made me some raised beds to grow in. I lost seedlings to the digging foxes ,had to re sow them. Good video honey

@@AcreHomestead not sure if it’s sold in the US I bought of Amazon it’s a dried mixture which you add to water and then add that to more water then water over the beds the micro organisms that are in the dried mixture come to life and kill the slugs.

Chicken eating eggs indicate they need protein and vitamin, put a golf ball in the nest box pull eggs as soon as possible after hen lays, it will take a week or two but the hen will stop. I boost protein and it stops

You can type in about the chicken eating other eggs and it said yes they can also teach others to do the same thing it also says that once a chicken gets the taste and likes it they will continue to do it.

I’m in Massachusetts, we got 8 inches of snow on April 16th. 2021 was not a good year for gardeners. I don’t know anything about trees but, it makes sense to me to wait until the tree goes dormant before removing a rather large branch. I’m so jealous of your fruit trees.

Another tip for the snails 🐌 and slugs 🐌 is to put broken up egg 🥚 shells around your plants (I know it’s a lot, lol) because they don’t like going over sharp things. So just add as often as you can and will also help in feeding your plants! And with the chicken 🐓 she is lacking calcium in her diet!

I have never had good luck using plastic jugs for covers, the plastic radiates the cold. You are doing an amazing job. One thing I do know , if you want to save seeds from peppers, tomatoes and melons pumpkins and squash, you need to keep different varieties separated . They cross pollinate and don't produce what you think you're planting.
