Thanks for growing with us!
Let’s prune some clematis! Today we are taking you along as we trim down our beautiful flowering vines. There are three pruning groups with different requirements. We only have plants in groups 2 and 3 but luckily group 1 doesn’t need pruning so it’s ok not to show it!
Key tools for the project include:
⭐️ Okatsune 104 Extra Large Handle Pruners

Roll the black paint on the wire. Lay the wire flat, roll the black paint, let it dry and do the other side. Voila.

Eric and Christopher… I love watching you two! Your gardens are gorgeous and match my goal of “refined exuberance” perfectly! So inspiring! What I truly admire, though, is your loving, respectful tone with each other! There’s no hint of defensiveness, just support and encouragement one for each other. Your fun with the pronunciation of “clematis” is a perfect example. I honestly keep you two in mind when my husband and I work through some gardening challenges! Thank you and keep up the great work!

I have to admit I have no clue what group any of my Clems are in and I treat them all the same-I basically cut them down to about 2 feet every year. I'm in Northern California zone 9 and most look like crapola by late July-no rain here from about May til Oct. Arabella is one of my faves and I've been experimenting with a late summer cut back and have had some success. I'm going to be even more Draconian this summer.

Perfect timing with your clematis video! I just trimmed my type 2 clematis and was worried about cutting off so many buds that were already swelling up. Seeing you do the same makes me feel better and I know the clematis will rebloom on new wood this year even though it had buds already swelling up. I love Coast of Maine soil too. So glad to be able to get it easily here in MA and NH.

First, I love that Christopher says "boop" when pruning, had me laughing:) Second, great video on pruning clematis. I planted two last year Nelly Moser (group 2) and Jamanii (group 3). I was so excited for them. I got them at my local nursery, they bloomed beautifully and then promptly succumbed to clematis wilt!!! I was so disappointed. I removed all the infected stems and hoping they return healthy this year. Fingers crossed.

That was very educational, I did not know there are different cutting groups of clematis. I have two plants, one is pink, and the other is the purple kind, not sure what the names of them are, I've had them for a few years. The purple one you showed on the video looks like Olympia. I normally do not cut them back which may be the reason I only got a few blooms last year. I'm in zone 7a southeast Connecticut so I'll try the cutting method you showed and see what happens.
@growformegardening
@growformegardening 5 месяцев назад
From what I have read, if they have the big flowers it is likely that they are group 2. You should be all set!
